Walmart is the nation’s largest retailer, second-largest corporation, and largest private employer (with 1.3 million workers).
Wal-Mart reported a net income of over $11 billion last year, "surely plenty of money to remedy some questionable workplace practices" said Timothy Jordan
Wage law violations, exploitation of workers, inadequate health care, and the retailer’s anti-union stance are some of the things that Wal-mart is often accused for, I found this accusations surprising because Wal-mart is a big company and I was expecting Wal-Mart to have more regulations and better working conditions.
I also found out that about 5,000 lawsuits are filed against Wal-Mart each year or 17 suits per working day..
Walmart is most commonly suited for workers exploitation. In foreign countries employees rights are violated often in order to stop this the International Labor Rights Fund filed a class-action lawsuit against Wal-Mart for violating workers’ rights, arguing that Wal-Mart denied minimum wage, required overtime, and punished union activity. In the article called The Good, The bad, and Walmart written by Timothy Jordan said that workers argued that In some cases they were beaten by

The article said that in other countries Wal-Mart denied women promotions, and I think that this is not fair because if women work as hard as a man they she should receive the same benefits, Wal-Mart was also been accused of failing to provide adequate safety equipment,In this case gloves, for its fabric cutters and seamstresses overseas. I think that if you are working for a company they should provide you with all the tools you need in order to perform your job in a good and safe
Gilded age 1878-1889 was the age of fast growth of industry and immigrants in America history. The production of steel and iron rose radically than other time. In contrast, the Western resources increased such as silver, lumber, and gold. As well as the transportation also improved. Railroad develop and move goods from resources rich west to east.
Walmart has been accused for gender discrimination and religious discrimination. After she quit her job, she filed a lawsuit against Walmart for bullying and harassment. Boucher was initially awarded $1.4 Million. The store manager didn’t get fired, but was moved to another
Jim Hightower accuses Wal-Mart of many things, such as necessitating employees to work an extra hour, on average without compensation. Also, Jim Hightower states that Wal-Mart deprives workers of equal opportunity and a decent pay rate. Jim Hightower, in a bleak fashion, depicts an image of Wal-Mart that most people wouldn’t have known about. The reason he does this is to make people aware of how employees are actually treated in a corporate America business. In the documentary about
Due to the size Walmart and its magnitude of power, as previously mentioned, once Walmart financially supports businesses and buy from them, they are forced to satisfy Walmart’s demands. These businesses have to please Walmart because they will buy so much of what they produce that without Walmart, they would be forced to close due to the substantial amount of financial
The article “Labouring the Walmart Way,” author Deenu Parmar talks about how Walmart is able to achieve selling goods at a lower price then any average superstore. The author goes on to explain that Walmart’s antiunion efforts, employee selection, low prices and high retention rate all contribute to their major success. Walmart’s stance on ant unionism allows them to keep wage cost down and keep all their profits up. Not allowing a union keeps Walmart with the power to keep low wages and force unpaid overtime.
‘Is Wal-Mart Good for America?’ On PBS Frontline, May 11, 2015 ‘Is Wal-Mart Good for America?’ is a documentary that examines the relationship between Wal-Mart’s rapid growth and its impact on the US economy ever since it blossomed in trade productivity in the mid 20th century. The documentary, published on February 2014 by PBS Frontline, conveys a deep understanding of how Wal-Mart changed the living standards of many Americans and took consumerism and retail logistics in the U.S. to another level; by cutting costs through offshore outsourcing to China and employing cheap Chinese labor. The documentary focuses on the changing relationship between big retailers and manufacturers and the transition in pricing and decision-making.
In my research of Wal-Mart unethical behavior have lead me to believe their pass action was illegal. After time Wal-Mart unethical behavior eventually caught up with them. They violated the law civic rights for sex discrimination, falsifying employment time cards, forcing them to clock out, while still on the clock and not paying them for those hours and bribery are all illegal activity that they could get away with for a long period of time. Even though the company only must pay out money for those lawsuits, I surprise that know went to jail for their unethical behaviors. I feel that if the Wal-Mart upper-management followed the code of conduct that they set forth in their organization mission, vision and values, they will would have never cross the line in unethical behavior.
SUMMARY JUDGMENT UPHELD WHEN PLAINTIFF OBSERVED A DANGEROUS CONDITION, BUT FAILED TO STEP AROUND AN EASILY AVOIDABLE OBSTACLE AND FELL. Brooke v. Winn-Dixie Stores, 42 Fla. L. Walmart was founded in the summer of 1962 by Kingfisher, Oklahoma native Sam Walton. Although Walton’s original vision for the store was relatively modest, the half century since its founding has seen Walmart morph into one of the biggest companies in the world. Today headed by one Doug McMillon, Walmart boasts more than 5000 stores in the United States of America alone and employs more than 1.5 million people. Walmart is undoubtedly an American institution, yet each Walmart store feels like its own little country. Walmart seems to have its own laws and customs and the people who shop their on a regular basis appear almost primitive in their behavior as they go about raiding the store’s shelves and wrestling with fellow customers for discount flat screen televisions and bulk packages of two-ply toilet paper.
Walmart’s compensation strategy is mostly using base pay that follows the market rate. Employees get paid by hours they worked. Pay rates are different and depend on the job position and working department relative to the organizational structure. Walmart uses job evaluation systems to provide internal equity and determine the basis for wage rate. They evaluated the worth of each job in terms of its skills, knowledge, responsibility or duties required and converted into an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly wage rate.
In this report, it was indicated that the employees were rude, they shouted at customers, accused customers of thievery, managers avoided customers and the employees went to the extent of scratching customer vehicles. This was retrieved from the online forums where people voice out their experiences and opinions. Websites such as ComplaintsBoard.com, Consumersaffairs.com and Report Your complaint.com also highlight lots of issues involving customer service at Walmart. Slow customer service has also been a challenge to Walmart as per Reuters Report 2011.
A woman who does not have many rights and protections make clothes for women who do. In the west people protested against low wages and long hours, such liberties cannot be said for those in developing countries. It is the west’s past but the everyday life of those in developing countries. The west sacrifices the rights of those in developing countries for the “greater good” of developed ones.
Walmart has succeeded in achieving the leading position in the retail industry. Walmart now stands as the biggest retailer in the world. However, the external factors constitute pressure on the company that must be address carefully. So handling this conflict appropriately outside of the courtroom will go a long way in saving their good name in the eye of the public, unions, and government. Wal-Mart has gone on to enter into arbitration with 69 of the 135 employees to reconcile the conflict at hand. They are confident that they will be able to come to terms with each and every employee. They chose to do the arbitration separately as each employee deserves different compensation as the consideration of their title, time in service, and tenure all play a role in determining this. Not one settlement on compensation would be appropriate for
