In the year of 1873, Susan B. Anthony had been arrested for casting an illegal vote at the last presidential election. This time period was known as the Women’s Rights Movement. Many women were beginning to acknowledge that they were treated unfairly by society’s standards against them, and had began to stand up for themselves and their fellow women. At this time, women were not allowed to vote. Most were stay-at-home mothers because men did not find them suitable for most jobs the men accommodated, and society discouraged them from even getting a real education. One rhetorical device that she uses is asyndeton, which is the absence of a conjunction between parts of a sentence. This is used when Anthony states, “Being persons, then, women are citizens; and on state has the right to make any law, or enforce any old law, that shall abridge their privileges or immunities.” This element of literature helps prove her point that everyone is equal and should be treated as such. Anthony also uses anaphora, which is the repetition of a word at the beginning of the phrase, when she claims, “a hateful oligarchy of sex”, “an oligarchy of wealth”, and “an oligarchy of learning” which would shock fear into the listener. Anthony then again uses another rhetorical device called hypophora, which is where the speaker raises a question and then answers it immediately after. An example of this would be when Anthony questioned, “Are women persons?” to which she answered immediately after to say that women are, although they are not treated as such. Anthony’s strong use of her rhetorical devices, and use of her ethos, pathos, and logos, is what made the speech so powerful and well-remembered. Anthony’s speeches, along with several other speeches from several other women and their peaceful protests, encouraged America to move forward past their prejudice and accept the fact that women are in fact citizens, and deserve to exercise every right the founding fathers granted
At Susan B. Anthony's funeral in 1906, Anna Howard Shaw delivered a eulogy that paid tribute to Anthony's life and legacy as a champion for women's rights. In her speech, Shaw employs a variety of rhetorical devices to convey the message that Anthony's cause of women's rights is a universal cause. One of the rhetorical devices Shaw uses is metaphor. She begins the eulogy by describing the grief and gratitude felt by those in attendance. Shaw says, "Your flags at half-mast tell of a nation's loss, but there are no symbols and no words which can tell the love and sorrow which fill our hearts.

Mrs. Clinton uses the canon of rhetoric invetio to proclaim that she was fighting for an inclusive America; an America that would be best lead by a women president. This is a completely new idea in our country and she was at the forefront of it. The rhetoric that Mrs. Clinton used was very effective, and even through all of her scandals, she convinced millions of Americans and even had the popular vote.
Thousands of women have screamed at the top of their lungs, clawed at the patriarchy, and tirelessly fought for their rights as citizens of the United States of America. From the beginning of mankind, women have been labeled as inferior to men not only physically, but mentally and intellectually as well. Only in 1920 did women gain the right to voice their opinions in government elections while wealthy white men received the expected right since the creation of the United States. Woman Suffrage Women's right activist, Carrie Catt, in her speech, “Address to Congress on Women’s Suffrage”, explains how woman suffrage in inevitable. Catt’s purpose is to convince Congress that it is time for woman suffrage. She adopts a confident tone , uses direct quotations, and appeals to logos in order to convince Congress that it is time for woman suffrage. A confident tone is adopted by Catt throughout her entire speech to congress. Catt opens with “Woman suffrage is inevitable.”
The use of emphasis as a rhetorical strategy in Clinton’s speech was aimed at highlighting the injustices that women faced during that time and the significance of treating women with respect. Clinton was able to achieve this

In her passage, Shadd Cary uses metaphor, logical appeal, and rhetorical questions in order to convey her message that the newspaper is needed. A concept that has greatly been dreamt over throughout history has been challenged, by a woman. Elizabeth Cady Stanton exerts repetition, allusion, and pathos to express her opinions in favor of increasing women's rights.
In her speech, “Women’s Rights are Human Rights,” First Lady Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton discusses the importance of fighting for women’s rights, as she argues they and human rights are one and the same. Clinton uses rhetoric, such as logic, empathy, and credibility, along with some propaganda to convince her audience of her point. The speech was given at the Fourth World Conference on Women on September 5, 1995 in order to convince people to stand up for women throughout the world and to respect their roles in society. Clinton supported women’s rights long before her speech. She had always been involved politically, first by being the president of the Young Republican’s club at her school (Harris).
For a very long time, the voting rights of the citizens have been a problem in the US. It started out with only men with land being able to vote, and then expanded to white men, and then to all men. However, women were never in the situation, they were disregarded and believed to not be worthy enough to have the same rights as men. They were essentially being treated as property, therefore having no rights. But, in Susan B. Anthony’s speech, she hits upon the point that women are just as righteous as men.

Women’s Suffrage Movement If you had lived in the 1800s, would you have fought for Women’s Rights or would you have decided to be a bystander? Throughout history women have always been ruled by men. At the start of the 1800s, women would have had only one right and that was being a housewife. Although women had no rights, women later raised their voices in the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

Anthony purpose is to make the woman of America realize that the treatment and limitations that hold them back are not correct because they are citizens and they deserve to be treated like one. She adopts a expressive and confident tone to encourage and light the hearts of American woman. To make her speech effective, she incorporates ethos in her speech to support her claims and reasons.
