Rhetorical Analysis: The David Cornfield Melanoma

Activity theory, as interpreted by Ph.D. candidates, Wardle and Kain, is a process that attempts to see all aspects of activity such as social interactions and use of writing and language to achieve goals. This theory is award winning. Activity theory states that for a system to be effective, the rules, community, subject, division of labor, and motives must be reasonable. These components are shown through the chosen tool of communication most often. When one area of the system is corrupted, the tool will no longer function correctly in order to communicate or achieve its goals.

Brooks utilizes personal emotional appeal to his audience that creates relatability to Kathy Fletcher and David Simpsons. The couple lives in a house consisting of “small bedrooms” yet they still manage to accommodate everybody that is welcomed to their home. Brooks give the idea that the couple are average, yet managed to do a tremendous task. These children refer to Kathy and David as “Momma and Dad,” showing that they represent what they didn’t have and it creates a relationship between the children and Kathy and David. The children are also “unfailingly polite” and “turn toward one another’s loves” proving that they are now part of a family and they began to rely on each other like a family does.

The Northeast Conference sponsored a speaker to present to the student-athletes here at Robert Morris University. The speaker was Dr. Derek Greenfield, who is a motivational speaker specializing in inclusive excellence and positive change. Dr. Greenfield travels around the country speaking to people about improving relations among groups of diverse individuals. At Robert Morris, his goal was to bring the athletic department together as a whole by helping everyone to become more accepting of others, therefore bringing the athletes together much like a family. This is important because studies show that athletes who feel accepted and important among their peers perform better in his or her particular sport.

Bryce‘s responses in the reading comprehension unit demonstrate his ability to read and understand both fiction and non-fiction material at grade level. He was able to use a variety of comprehension strategies to make sense of unfamiliar text. Bryce‘s narrative piece entitled Blackout, demonstrates his ability to write grade level text for a variety of purposes and audiences. He is able to organize his writing effectively by including details to support his main idea. Bryce used language intentionally and edited his work for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Three main factors to this trend in cancer is frequent exposure to environmental carcinogens, inheritance of cancer genes and having a weak immune system. For instance, “ The results of the research indicate that DNA damage does occur in workers exposed to low concentrations of styrene.” (Doc. D) Since workers are frequently being exposed to carcinogens their cells are vulnerable to damage. A majority of these workers that come in contact with these carcinogens work in construction or agricultural fields.

Treatment for melanoma could even include chemotherapy: The treatment of disease by the use of chemical substances, especially the treatment of cancer by cytotoxic and other drugs. “Warning: That Tan Could Be Hazardous” by Sabrina Tavernise appeared on New York Times, in the January 10, 2015. In her article, Tavernise insists that indoor tanning provides people with skin cancer which might bring them to having melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer). Sabrina Tavernize says that many factors, including genetics, are at play with skin cancer, one of the largest is the ultraviolet light, which people get during tanning process, it exposures its non burning ray to getting melanoma. Teenage girls from different states, who were intervied said, that tan skin makes them feel “… more confident and more comfortable...,” when they walk around, but they don’t realize what the risk is. According to the information used in the article, tanning beds account approximately 400,000 cases of skin cancer in the United States each year, with 6,000 cases of melanoma.

In general, this ad effectively uses the appeals of pathos, making for a very effective advertisement. Whether it be through an emotional connection through the children or a relatable connection that uses the viewer’s own experiences, its use of pathos is very well done

When Observing the ad by Hairclub.com the reader can determine many things. The ad displays many different elements that draws in the audience and when looking further you can see what exactly the creator used to capture the audience’s attention. The logo used on the ad is what established credibility and ethos. The use of color, or lack of, the picture of the man with and without hair and also the words used on the ad is used to establish pathos. The creator uses both the elements of ethos and pathos and the ad appeal to the audience of middle aged men everywhere whom have hair loss issues.
