Of course, they did not know of it yet because they were just uneducated kids. For example, when Harriet Ann Jacobs was little girl she says, “I was so fondly shielded that I never dreamed I was a piece of merchandise, trusted to them for safe keeping, and liable to be demanded of them at any moment”.(Harriet Jacobs,565) Also, the girls were to stay inside with their mothers and help clean the house, while the boys were able to go to school and get an education. For example, Harriet Ann Jacobs states in her book, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl”, that she never knew she was a slave until her childhood had passed away.(Harriet Jacobs,564) As she got older she started to realize how her life was not actually hers, but instead it was her masters. Her master was a cruel man who would abuse her. He started to sexually assault her and she could not do anything about it. She says, “he peopled my young mind with unclean images, such as only a vile monster could think of. I turned from him with disgust and hatred. But he was my master. I was compelled to live under the same roof as him-where I saw a man forty years my senior daily violating the most sacred commandments of nature.”(Harriet Jacobs,567) Many women have suffered from sexual assault and have felt like there is no law that would protect them from this horrible act. Many women devoted most of their time trying to show men that they too can work just as hard as them. They tried to show men that they can do all the things that men thought only they could do. For example, in Sojourner Truth speech, she says, “I have ploughed, and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And a’n’t I a women? I could work as much and eat as much as a man-when I could get it-and bear de lash as well!”.(Sojourner Truth,440-441) In Sojourner Truth 's women 's right speech, she explains all the farm labor she was put through and how she can do as much as any man, even though she’s a woman. However, it was not just about women wanting to join the workforce, but they also wanted to be educated like the men. Most women were kept from getting involved with political system, because of their household ‘jobs’ they needed to do and because they did not understand the full concept of reading or writing. Most women had to educate themselves from hearing their masters talk. Sally Hemings was a slave on the Monticello plantation in the late 18th century, and her experience helps us to understand that her gender aided the way she was treated versus if they went by the color of her skin (Dilkes Mullins). {Woman during this era were thought of as property, they were objectified, they were treated poorly and had no choice. Ms. Hemings was a beautiful sixteen-year-old enslaved girl (Gordon-Reed, 102) who was more than just a slave on the Monticello plantation.
Women can get the credit they deserve, speak out, and let their voices heard and in politics. If nobody spoke up America would not be what it is today and instead a place of disregard by men to the women that have literally made them. If they were to stay at home they would continue belonging to a “cult of domesticity”. This meant that men would undermine them as housewives. The social sphere transformed groundbreakingly by Antebellum America.
The fight for women’s rights was not without good cause. Many saw the hypocrisies of allowing all men – even complete buffoons – the right to vote while educated ladies had no say on the ballot. Divorce laws prevent women from splitting from their spouse unless he agreed to do so. In addition, women could not own property or keep their own paychecks if they worked (see Document 1). These problems of hipocrasy were additionally highlighted when people began to see women doing the same exact work as men on farms and in other job areas (see Document 5).
Struggles of Slaves in the American South The difficulties and hardships of slaves in slavery in the American South explores the lives of slaves and what they went through. Slaves had rough education and faced physical pain every day. For example a couple of slaves are Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass.
Women did not have many rights in the 19th century. They could not vote, serve on juries, if married could not keep wages or own property, and women could not get a good education. At a convention when two women tried to join a meeting they could not have a role in the proceeding. Later she made a convention that over 300 men and women showed up to. Then Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sediments that showed the rights they wanted.
The Second Great Awakening was extremely influential in shifting the minds towards reform in people across America. The mentality of the people at this time was closed minded and had acceoted their way of living. Among other factors, Charles Finney played and important role in the success of the Second Great Awakening. “Much of the impulse towards reform was rooted in the revivals of the broad religious movement that swept the Untied States after 1790.” Revivals during the Second Great Awakening awakened the faith of people during the 1790s with emotional preaching and strategic actions from Charles Finney and many other influential preachers, which later helped influence the reforms of the mid-1800s throughout America.
Harriet Ann Jacobs is the first Afro-American female writer to publish the detailed autobiography about the slavery, freedom and family ties. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent to keep the identity in secret. In the narrative, Jacobs appears as a strong and independent woman, who is not afraid to fight for her rights. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published in 1961, but was unveiled almost 10 years later due to the different slave narrative structure. Frequently, the slave narratives were written by men where they fight against the slavery through literacy by showing their education.
Men have given the media this unrealistic image that women cannot fend for themselves, cannot do hard jobs, or cannot get as far in life as a man. Even in jobs, though a woman and a man may be in the same position, women “earn just 74 cents for every $1 a man earns” (CNNMoney). This is truly unfair, yet men today still say that women are “equal,” though it is obviously false. Women today, though they have more rights than in the 1800’s, are still not in the place we need to be in ranking with men. Women are still abused, sexually harassed and mistreated more than men because of their sex.
In this article about Stanton I found, Sara Shull states, “Elizabeth Cady Stanton rebelled against the conventions that limited her own self realization and independence. Her words and actions encouraged other women to embrace their autonomy and fight for their self sovereign birthright.” This shows how Stanton went to be a role model for other women and help them fight for their own. Further on, Elizabeth Cady Stanton later wrote, "The general discontent I felt with woman 's portion as wife, housekeeper, physician, and spiritual guide, the chaotic conditions into which everything fell without her constant supervision, and the wearied, anxious look of the majority of women, impressed me with a strong feeling that some active measures should be taken to remedy the wrongs of society in general, and of women in particular. My experience at the World Anti-slavery Convention, all I had read of the legal status of women, and the oppression I saw everywhere, together swept across my soul, intensified now by many personal experiences.
After the Civil War, women were willing to gain the same rights and opportunities as men. The war gave women the chance to be independent, to live for themselves. Women’s anger, passion, and voice to protest about what they were feeling was the reason of making the ratification of the 19th amendment, which consisted of giving women the right to vote. Most people do not know of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but much to people’s surprise, she was just as important in Women’s Rights Movement as Susan B. Anthony, if not more important. Elizabeth Cady Stanton helped to create remarkable strides in the Women's Rights. During her life, Elizabeth was an American suffragist, social activist, abolitionist, writer, lecturer, and chief philosopher of the women’s rights movement. She also organized the Seneca Falls Convention with Lucretia Mott whose aim was to obtain equal rights for women. During the Convention, Cady Stanton wrote the “Declaration of Sentiments” which declared that American women should have the same civil and political rights that American men had, including the right to vote.
Although times and conditions have changed, women in today 's society are still being discriminated against because of the same belief that women are inferior to men. Women in the united states and other first world countries are being deprived of equal pay and equal rights. Women in today 's society make 80 cents for every dollar a man makes and get discriminated against because of the belief that women aren 't as strong and intelligent as mem. They have been excluded from numerous educational opportunities and in some middle-eastern countries, are stripped from their basic human rights like education and equality. An individual should not be treated worse than another individual. They should respect their race, their gender, religion, sexual preferences, and also their needs.
