In this settlement, many were said to be witches, and those who were had to deal with the repercussions. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to parallel the hysteria and governmental actions of the Salem Witch trials with the Red Scare that was occurring in America at the time.
At the beginning of the book, Abigail and Betty began accusing multiple others in the town of being witches, “I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil, I saw Goody Bibber with the Devil.” (Miller 48). The court is seen as the highest peak of justice in the government, and no one was to dare question this. The only people who had the power to question the court was the court itself and no one else, “Do you take it upon yourself to determine what this court shall believe and what it shall set aside? ”(Miller 85). Disagreement with the word of the court in any way was not permitted, “You must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between.”(Miller 94). This matter was seemingly black and white to those in the court, but not necessarily to those who were not apart of the court. These mindsets have still carried on in modern day society. The community of Salem was run under a strict theocracy, where religious leaders held immense power and threat to the common people. With the large fear of the unknown and wide belief in apparitions and entities this added to and heightened the chaos of these witch trials. During the trials an unjust court is shown immediately in the first hearing, the presumption of innocence was ignored and all of the evidence was based on hearsay and rumors.

I chose to do this term paper on the Salem Witch Trials because this topic has always fascinated me. I watched a movie when I was younger called “The Crucible” and it was interesting to me. I have always wondered if these people was innocent, or really “witches.” Why were all these people killed? Was these people men or women?

Proctor acts to save others and bring about justice to the witch trials in Salem.

Mr. Hale entered the town of Salem in act 1 after he was called upon by Parris after there was a concern that Betty, his daughter, was possessed by the devil. I am here to tell you about what I have discovered by investigating your town of Salem. As I was sitting back listening to all the trail I noticed some things that are rather wrong in my opinion. I believe that Abigail Williams and John Proctor did have an affair with each other, Mary Warren was telling the truth about the girls who were faking witchcraft being used on them, and with the witch trials going on Salem is starting to fall apart. These are just three out of the many things I found wrong due the trials. Everybody in the whole town knew there was always something going on between them to.
The Salem witch trials proved to be one of the most cruel and fear driven events to ever occur in history. Many innocent people were accused of witchcraft, and while some got out of the situation alive not everyone was as lucky. But the reason as to why Arthur Miller felt the need to write The Crucible in the first place was because the unfortunate reality that history seemed to have repeated itself again. The Witchcraft Trials were trials that mostly girls, but some men got accused of seeing the devil and doing work for him. If you were accused of being a witch you were to admit to seeing the devil, accuse other people, or you would get hung. Some people wouldn 't admit to being a witch just to save their life because of their faith in Jesus.
