1. What is your interest in applying to the Internship Program for Masters in Mental Health Students at the Psychological Center? I am writing to express my strong interest in the fall 2016 pilot internship program at the Psychological Center at The City College of New York. I am a first-year master’s student enrolled in the Mental Health Counseling program and anticipate graduating in May of 2017. I am particularly interested in gaining experience working with the diverse population the Psychological Center serves consisting of underserved, disenfranchised populations from the New York Metro area. Additionally working with adults, adolescences, couples and families will offer experience working with a wide range of ages and in various types of relationships. I particularly like the idea of meeting a community need by …show more content…
Coming of age in Columbus, Ohio, in a community with a large gay and lesbian population, I was able to see a how a thriving subculture can still have grossly underserved members. As a gay man my future objective is to give back to the community by working with gay and lesbian couples facing challenges within their relationship. My ultimate career goal is to achieve a position at a community health center that services an underserved population. 2. What are your clinical strengths and what are areas for development that you would like to work on? Through my own personal struggles around coming out I developed the ability to identify with the difficulties associated with being different. During this experience I developed compassion and the capacity to empathize with others. The open-mindedness I bring will enable me to put patients at ease and make them feel
What interests you about your selected program of study? Computer science has always been the aspect of study that has grabbed my attention from a young age. CS always created a sense of awe in me because of the fact that individual people, with a firm understanding of CS, could completely manipulate technology into whatever creation they wanted. In the same way an artist can paint on a canvas, computer scientist can create through code and each program carries a sense of the programmer with it. The more you learn about CS the more uses it gains, making it a tool that builds upon itself.
In addition to working as a Clinical Research Associate, I wanted to gain exposure to other medical fields, not only emergency medicine. Positioned outside the ED’s research work office was the emergency department’s psychiatric unit. Having taken courses like Looking back on Growing Up and the Science of Happiness, I wanted to gain exposure to psychiatry, particularly the effects of early childhood trauma on the incidence of psychiatric disorders during adulthood. Motivated by my interests, I joined the Initiative for Social and Psychiatric Initiatives (InSPIRES) at the Bellevue Hospital Center. While working at Bellevue Hospital gave me the opportunity to interact with a diverse array of patients, ranging from homeless to underrepresented patients, working with the InSPIRES team, I got the opportunity to meet and interview inpatients and outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder.
Statement of Personal Achievements It was the end of my junior year of high school that I decided to immigrate to the United States. I was motivated to come to America from Hong Kong for my education. I also aimed to broaden my perspective on life. As a new immigrant and young adult, my life completely changed within these two years.
One of my personal experiences that has had a significant impact on my career goals was working with the LGBTQ+ community in a rural setting. I saw firsthand the challenges and barriers that this population faces when it comes to accessing healthcare, and it solidified my desire to work with underserved communities and advocate for their healthcare needs.
As a little girl my dad would always ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. The most obvious answer would be a princess that was before I started to like teaching. As of today I would like to become a teacher because I have always had a love for teaching. Not only is being a teacher all about teaching but to help others and motivate them to do better in school and actually enjoy learning. I live in Desert Hot Springs a small town which means climate is either hot or very hot.
A meaningful contribution I have made in my community is through my involvement with my church in the Faith Formation program. I take part in helping freshman and sophomores in high school prepare themselves for confirmation. All the high school students at the Church of St. Michael in Prior Lake meet every Wednesday night and talk about our faith and how we live it in our everyday lives. My role is to be a table leader and act as a role model and a help the confirmation candidates become more active in their faith lives. Not only do I help the candidates learn more about their faith lives, but it also helps me, as a leader, to dig deeper into my faith and learn how to live through God in new ways.
Our society has been founded on the principles of beginning one’s life through flourishing in an education system. Building a foundation to build on as one ages has proven to be substantially beneficial, yet it is not without its advantages and disadvantages. Being a high schooler, my experience is well defined and unique compared to those who are younger to me, as they are still going through what I have passed and learned from. High school is distinctive in that it not only prepares you for the life upcoming, but creates an environment analogous to the difficulties of the modern world. As I step onto the campus, I am enclosed in a border, one that a student is not allowed to cross during the school’s operating hours, which leads to severe
Due to the days I attend school, and attend work, I have not been able to be part of the domestic violence group or the parenting classes. Next semester, I will only be attending school from Monday-Wednesday, and I am hoping that the classes will be changed to a day when I could attend. One of the highlights I have had from this internship, is being able to provide a service to the clients I have seen so far. In addition, I also enjoy being part of the food program offered by the center. I get a lot of client interaction, and I have learned how the food program runs.
Last fall, I was honored to attend a networking event at Quarles & Brady LLP in Milwaukee, WI through Marquette University Law School. There, I met exceptional attorneys who were welcoming to all the students. That event has left me with a desire to work for such a respected and professional company, like Quarles & Brady LLP. Growing up, I was introduced to the importance of a dependable legal team in conversations with my family in Brazil. My uncle runs a labor & employment and business law firm in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Being a recurrent theme, the lesson I've learned from computer science, "happiness is a program without errors," becomes ever so prevalent in defining my experiences in STEM-related subjects. It's that "Oh!" moment when I figure out how to solve a challenging problem from the Mu Alpha Theta database - that "Finally!" moment when I finish coding a complicated program - that "Aha!"
Inevitably, the future will come, whether tomorrow or next year. My life altering decisions are approaching quickly, but luckily, from the moment I was born I was given the courage and confidence to be a leader in whatever I wanted to pursue. In my future career, my deepest desires and all things in between, my parents led me and my sisters by example to become strong leaders in anything. Their personal careers, life stories and choices help to mold the leader that I will be. My mom, an occupational therapist, sets direct leadership examples for my family.
Relationship building is one of the most important personal characteristic needed from employees today. Having strong relationships with coworkers not only improves teamwork and employee morale, but it also increases employee productivity. Building relationships are what I do best. I am a driven developer. I cultivate and recognize the potential in others as I also notice improvements, even if they are small.
My initial interest in becoming a pharmacist began when I was a sophomore in high school. I was in chemistry class realizing how much I enjoyed the class when our class intern told me about how he works at our local pharmacy in Hartford, Medicap. After that day, I decided I would attend college to study pharmacy. Over the course of the next two years, I threw out other options that interested me, but I always ruled them out and went back to my original desire to be a pharmacist. After completing two job shadows, both in a hospital setting and a retail setting, and working at our local pharmacy, I continued pursuing my dream of become a pharmacist by attending SDSU to obtain a Pharm D. I believe that my compassion to help people in any
My plans and goals after I finish this Master’s degree program is to eventually to work my way up to a project management position. I currently work at the Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers, Florida as a Web Applications Developer where my primary responsibilities include the development and implementation of dynamic web based applications that would integrate into the College-wide enterprise application suite and any other third-party systems and services. I am using PHP (a server-side scripting language) and CodeIgniter (a popular PHP web framework) to create these modern web applications for the college. My future career goal is to hold an administrative or project management role that would oversee and manage all levels of web operations particularly in application development and integration. An application administrator’s main responsibility would be to assure that the following characteristics are incorporated in the production of each enterprise application: reliability, security, scalability, interoperability, usability, testability, and ensuring that the performance of these applications
Since I was young, I learned many different good values thanks to my family that always encouraged the promotion of these. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela. I was a part of the school “Colegio Santiago de Leon de Caracas”, where I was able to develop the different values that I possess today. In this stage of my life I learned what responsibility was, and would continue to be one of my mayor values. This value ensured the achievement of my commitments and my goals.
