According to my research, students back in the 1960s played a critical role in developing the Savannah State College; into what is now known as the illustrious Savannah State University. Students from the 1960s dealt with the hardship of going to school, while the civil rights movement was active. Due to the fact of the civil rights movement being in act, it brought various problems into the school system. On the other hand, it strengthens the students and united them. In the 1960s, African Americans struggled for racial equality. There has been many efforts made by numerous communities in order to conquer Civil Rights. Wendell G. Rayburn, as the eighth president of Savannah State. Before he accepted the job, he worked many years as the dean at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He was recommended by the Search Committee at Savannah State. By Dr. Rayburn being a leader at Savannah State College without any experience in a black institution, he made history within Savannah State presidents. All of Savannah State’s presidents were either enrolled or had some leading experience at the school or any other schools before their role. Ideologies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X The Civil Rights Movement 1950s and1960s consisted of the efforts made by Civil rights activist to end racial segregation and discrimination. Even though basic civil rights for African America where granted through the Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments of the United States Constitution (Franklin, 535-536). However, Jim Crow laws and institutionalized racism continued to oppress African Americans decades later and considered them second class citizen. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X are probably the most prominent African American civil rights leaders of the 20th century.
Although slavery was declared over after the passing of the thirteenth amendment, African Americans were not being treated with the respect or equality they deserved. Socially, politically and economically, African American people were not being given equal opportunities as white people. They had certain laws directed at them, which held them back from being equal to their white peers. They also had certain requirements, making it difficult for many African Americans to participate in the opportunity to vote for government leaders. Although they were freed from slavery, there was still a long way to go for equality through America’s reconstruction plan.
Civil rights demonstrates that all people, no matter what race, religion, color or class, are equal and have equal rights. Although the civil rights time period is a subject that is not talked about much today, it was years ago when there was a lot of segregation and discrimination. There were many African Americans who made a difference in their fight for civil rights, but not many white people tried to make that same difference. Jane Addams was one of the few white people who made this effort; she had an even bigger impact on civil rights since she was female and wealthy, along with her skin color. Jane Addams got involved in promoting civil rights because she grew up around many sophisticated adults that also supported it.
During, the fight for civil rights in the late 1950s and 1960s two men stood up to lead the black community to fight for their rights and their equality. In the 1960’s it was a hard time for black Americans to consider themselves as equals due to the laws in the United States of America. The Civil War had stopped slavery but hadn’t stopped discrimination towards blacks. To help their fellow African Americans, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. both wanted to find a way that could and a way that should help all African Americans receive equality in a world where they weren’t wanted.

The civil war, starting in 1861, lasted 4 years. Afterwards, reconstruction in the south begun, but 15 years later, 1880, marked the end of reconstruction altogether, leaving both sides effected. Between the years 1860 and 1880, the civil war and its aftermath transformed relationships and progress in America. The Union tried to enforce a positive integration for the African Americans but faced resistance from the South.
Starting in 1954 African Americans decided once and for all that now was a sweet time for a revolution. Since the moment they were forced to come to this country they have been treated worse than terrible. They have had to fight and claw for every right they have, and between 1954 and 1965 was an important war. In these years the civil rights movement changed the lives of African Americans for the better, it got the buses and schools desegregated, and gave African Americans the right to vote. In these years separate was no longer considered equal.
The year of 1965 the black community let out a collective victory cry. They had finally gotten the rights they fought hard for. They could at last vote, go to school and college, and got the working condition they deserve. During the Civil Rights era, segregation and discrimination were common prejudicial treatment of black people in America. Some people accepted this unfair treatment, while others fought for equality. The Tuskegee Airmen were a group that were strongly devoted to having equality in gender opportunities. Also is Jackie Robinson, one person from this era that had a great deal of influence on racial equality.
The 1960s era was quite the controversial time, debating between if segregation was the way to go or the complete opposite, integration. African Americans during this time were fighting for equality and acceptance in their communities. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 specifically outlaws any discrimination, this meaning :race, color, religion, sex, and etc. In a community, working together brings unity and equality in the environment. Malcolm X thought segregation was the path to follow, but separate doesn’t mean equal.
