Scott Peterson is serving a sentence at San Quentin State Prison in California which will end in death by lethal injection for the murder of his wife and unborn child, who were reported missing on Christmas eve, 2002. At first Scott was not a suspect because his family members and Laci’s believed he was innocent. It was not until other matters that was brought up that they began to question his involvement in the disappearance of Laci. Scott’s stories started becoming inconsistent. His stories started to change and became different over time. His first statement was that he had a business meeting, then he withdrew his statement and said that he was fishing at the time of Laci’s disappearance. Evidence was then brought in to show that the …show more content…

On June 2004 Peterson went on trial. The prosecution said the reasons behind Peterson’s actions were due to the fact that he was having finical troubles and his affair with Amber Frey. The prosecution pointed out facts during the trial that they believed he killed his wife due to a great amount of debt as well as his desire to be single.
The defense, however argued that there was no evidence to connect Scott Peterson to the murders of Laci and Conner. They argued that all the evidence shown were only circumstantial. The only thing that could connect Scott to the murder of his wife and son was the DNA evidence that was found, was one of Laci’s hair on his boat. They believed that a cult had murdered Laci in some sort of ritual for sacrifice. The defense pointed out that there was no cause of death, no time of death, no murder weapon, no evidence as to how she was killed, no crime scene, no eyewitnesses, no confessions. The defense also pointed out that the defendant had an alibi. The state did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Scott Peterson killed Laci and Conner.

One piece of circumstantial evidence the prosecutors had to support this was that a Richard Patterson, the man that was to marry one of Kuklinski’s daughters, said that he had unknowingly helped Kuklinski move a corpse to be buried near where the family went horseback riding. This likely victim was Deppner who had been killed in his apartment a weekend earlier. With this information, detectives searched for blood in the apartment and found it underneath the cleaned carpet. Patterson also claimed that he saw Tupperware in Deppner’s apartment that he had seen before at Richard Kuklinski’s home which leads to believe that Kuklinski delivered food to Depner and that’s when he might have killed him. The prosecution also called Barbara Deppner to the stand and she knew about the two victims being hidden in hotels, and she said that her ex-husband told her that Kuklinski wanted to kill Smith.
Some reason could be that the police or detectives has investigated many crimes and has find out who did the crime. The jury might think that the detective is always right and all the evidence that he find will always and certainly lead to the correct suspect. However, in this case the detective found the wrong evidence. This detective from the story was named Ken Thompson. He also made a mistake in a previous case.
Scott Peterson was convicted of the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner Peterson. He has been on death row for over a decade as he tries to get his conviction appealed. Peterson and his family maintain his innocence, even participating in a docu-series titled, The Murder of Laci Peterson. This has caused quite a stir among viewers who now say they have doubts about his guilt. Could Scott Peterson been wrongfully imprisoned for so long because of circumstances he had no control over?
Have you ever thought if a criminal could be falsely accused? Perhaps you would think the judges or police would have good evidence to contradict the criminal. She decided to hitchhike and her body was found three hours later. Investigators assumed that her case was unrelated and left it unsolved. She did not fit the profile of the other victims because she was not a prostitute. Detectives later found out that she was in fact a victim of the Green River Killer (Rule, 2004). Another victim, Patricia, who was a prostitute, was found on June 13, 1982.
Over 300 years ago, more than 100 citizens of the colony of Massachusetts were accused of the crime of witchcraft, and many executed. Although this era in history, known as the Salem Witch Trials, lasted only mere months, its impact on the American criminal justice system has lasted until present day. Although both the trials in Salem and modern America are based on a similar justice system, there are vast differences, specifically in the rights of the defense, most notable in the separation of Church and State, the standards of evidence, and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The modern American criminal justice system, in comparison to that of the time of the Salem Witch Trials, has changed drastically. No longer is the rule of law based on
His fingerprints were found on a map that was in the glove compartment of the victim's car. The map had the defendant's fingerprints on it, which suggested that he had handled the map at some point. This was used as evidence that he had been in the car around the time of the murder; However it just tells you that he touched a map that was in her car, they were in a relationship so they would have been physically intimate with each other. The presence of his fingerprints on the map found in the victim's car was used as evidence against him at his trial. The serial podcast goes through each one of these outcomes and Sarah Koenig shows that the evidence that they put into the trial should not have been admissible.
Laci Peterson was reported missing on December 24, 2004 by her stepfather, from her home in Modesto California. Her husband , Scott Peterson was suspicious from the beginning in the eyes of the public. Not only did he seem nonchalant and uncaring about his wife’s disappearance, but he refused to publicly ask people to help search for his missing wife. This gave him a horrible reputation in the media and brought light to his strange behavior throughout the case. His lack of cooperation with the police didn’t help , in fact Scott refused to take a polygraph, and according to police seemed uninterested in the investigation.
Lastly, O.J. Simpson’s only alibi for the time of the murders was he was at home sleeping. There were no witnesses who could confirm his
In this case the only obstacle the prosecutors had was prove that Caylee Anthony was murdered by her own mother, they had to prove beyond reasonable doubt to the jury that she was behind her daughter’s death.
