To me an American is someone who can make a difference in the world, someone who can be a free citizen, born and raised in the United States. The idea that everyone around us is viewed equally, looked at from the same perspective. Segregation is a thing in the past, a place where people come to see fairness and equality among people. Yes, compared to past times fairness and equality in America is better but there are still many disagreements among jobs and schooling, and crimes that are viewed at differently by race. We are protected by the bill of rights which provides us with a lot of safety. This freedom has caused many issues and killings because people take advantage of using a gun for other reasons then hunting or protection and self defense. We have had 99 mass shootings unlike France who has had 10! The many different sexualities, and religious beliefs cause disagreements among people because they do not have similar ideas of life. Chaos is controlled by the government to keep people in a righteous form, by enforcing laws. Without laws people wouldn't have boundaries and crimes would be committed more often and drastic events would be in the making. To survive in America much effort must be put forth. Everyone here in the United States works hard for there achievements nothing in life is just given to you. Poverty is a major issue among people in America, many citizens lack shelters, with food and water. This causes the poverty we see on the streets today where people search all over for food. The unemployed have no way of making money which causes this poverty, but is it really there fault? Our school systems these days are so unbelievably expensive and so hard to afford. Even if you do pay for schools most young adults are paying off there school loans until there late 60's! Most jobs won't even except you if you have a poor

Massey and Denton’s book, American Apartheid: Segregation and the Making of the Underclass, hits strong on this topic of “residential segregation”. Massey and Denton, both went hand and hand with what Jackson was saying. This is a well organized, well-written and greatly researched book.
Segregation in the south was at its highest in the 1920s. Segregation laws legally prevented any contact between white and black people in public areas for example, public transportation. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP, was established in 1909 and is the oldest and largest organization for civil rights in America today. During the 1920s, the NAACP made great strides in the fight for equality; this organization was a vital part of the movement to abolish segregation. Segregation also extended to other public areas such as restaurants, medical centers(hospitals), government buildings, entertainment centers,etc.

It was a controversial issue in which African American and Caucasian could not use the same public facilities, or attend the same schools etc... However, these segregated laws were considered as the Jim Crow laws that made inequality well known. Throughout the 1960s, a series of acts were passed in America to aid minorities in the areas of education, employment, public accommodation, and housing. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin in places of employment and public accommodation. Prior to this act, African Americans were banned or segregated in public areas such as restrooms, restaurants, theaters, and even schools. People throughout America had different views on how to end segregation, as each state had its own background with segregation and slavery. Oklahoma although it prided itself on never being a slave state it still had segregation, from the 1920s to when schools and public places began to be integrated in the 1960s. In the earlier phases in segregation practices in Oklahoma you could find the Ku Klux Klan marching through downtown Oklahoma City, people recognized and supported the Klan. The Klan recruited Public High School students to join their patronage against the African American community. Segregation, oppression, and injustice are only a sliver of what African Americans experienced during the Reconstruction Era. This was a period of time to “rebuild” the United States post Civil War and emancipation proclamation (Reconstruction PowerPoint 1/7/16), but it wasn’t a community building exercise. The 1950s were a period often associated with conformity, when men and women discerned firm gender roles and followed society’s expectations. Racial segregation was still a present factor in society and the Civil Rights Movement began wholeheartedly. In 1954, the Brown v. Board of Education ruling by the Supreme Court opened the opportunity of the rights for all Americans to have an equal education regardless of race or religion. Prominent figures such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. questioned those who were against equal rights for black Americans. During this time, African Americans fought for equality in employment, education and housing which acted as a catalyst for future change.
Brown Did Not Help the Economic Problems of African Americans Justice Earl Warren fought tirelessly to have a unanimous Supreme Court decision in the case of Brown v. Board of Education. The justices knew this would be a landmark case (Urofsky, Seminar). While Brown was a step in the right direction, not only did it not solve the problem of school segregation, but it did not solve the root of the Jim Crow laws. By ruling on segregation specifically in education and not addressing the economic issues that plagued African Americans, Brown did not have the positive effect on race relations in the south that it could have. Brown did not solve the problem of school segregation.
In the 1950s America found itself facing the deep-rooted issue of racism, specifically toward African –Americans. Slaves were freed and people were declared equal, equality was not always prevalent. Segregation remained in much of the country. This meant people groups such as blacks had were forcefully separated from whites in schools, transportation, hospitals, and more. The segregation of schools based on a students skin color was in place until 1954. On May 17th of that year, during the Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education, it was declared that separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. However, before this, the segregation of schools was a common practice throughout the country. In the 1950s there were many differences in the way that black public schools and white public schools were treated with very few similarities. The differences between the black and white schools encouraged racism which made the amount of discrimination against blacks even greater.

This is the physical separation of two or more groups into different neighborhoods, or a form of segregation that “sorts population groups into various neighborhoods contexts and shapes the living environment at the neighborhood level. In addition, we will discuss a health disparity, which is defined as inequalities that exist when members of certain population groups do not benefit from the same health status as other groups. According to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1968) “Segregation is the adultery of an illicit intercourse between injustice and immorality.” These policies created racial segregation between illegal immigrants by promoting that they should not be able to have access to everything a citizen can. Moreover, these policies began to dehumanize this population by taking away basic human rights and opportunities. This brought about the ideal that race and perspectives are not natural more socially constructed by the communities and governments (Lopez, 2000). These individuals already had many challenges or intersects that they needed to overcome by these policies it just added more.
Segregation occurs when people actively exclude members of a disadvantaged racial group from the allocation of resources and from access to institutions. The most common examples include denial of equal education, housing, employment, and health care on the basis of race (Duckitt, 2001). Physical attacks on racial outgroups have frequently been perpetrated by proponents of segregation (Green et al., 1999) and are correlated with other overt forms of discrimination (Schneider et al., 2000).
