SELF CONTROL In the 1960s, a Stanford professor named Walter Mischel began conducting a series of important psychological studies. During his experiments, Mischel and his team tested hundreds of children — most of them around the ages of 4 and 5 years old — and revealed what is now believed to be one of the most important characteristics for success in health, work, and life. In “Cooling Down Our Brain,” Jason Peters talked about how researchers proved that self-control can be developed by specific mental exercises. He explained an experiment named “the marshmallow test” and how the result of the experiment showed that children who had self-control became more successful in their lives than those who did not have it. The author further stated that additional research showed that the human brain has “hot” and “cool” areas and everyone can train the “cool” part to control the impulses.

There were four indicators that were taken: aliases, social security numbers, dates, and place of birth that were used to create a self-control measure. “Negative binomial regression models indicated that offenders who scored low on the self-control measure accumulated significantly more violent index, property index, white-collar, and nuisance arrests net the effects of control variables. The marshmallow test is a test for kids that are about 4 to 5 years old. The test is to see if the kids don 't eat the marshmallow. There put into a room for 15 minutes with the marshmallow in front of them. If they do not eat the marshmallow to get another one,but if they eat the marshmallow the kid fails. About 15 years later the kids that did not eat it were successful and they had good grades but the kids who ate it,were not so successful and got bad grades.

Now, from these results of the experiment, parents should really apply this experiment or even try it on their children. If their children are part of the thirty percent that got two treats, their future will be a bright one. Self Control is Essential Self control is a very important trait for a person to have. Having the ability to restrain your emotions and impulses will keep oneself away from unnecessary conflict and strengthen one’s mind. For example, in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus displays his aptness to keep his composure and do what is needed to be done even in difficult situations. His men, on the other hand, failed to constrain themselves and allowed their emotions cloud their judgement.
