Discussion 5- Advocacy According to recent data, the baby boom generation will have all retired by 2030, (AARP), which is only 15 years from now. The population in this generation will include 77 million more 65 and older individuals, not including the 54 million already in retirement and receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits. Please note that many seniors also receive some form of federal benefits such as military pensions, survivor’s benefits, annuities, investments income or an awarded settlement (Quad Agno, 14). Unfortunately, in our society driven many times by greed, this has placed our seniors in vulnerable positions, particularly when health and cognitive functions have declined; a slight disadvantage of becoming older (Quadagno, …show more content…
National attention should focus on seniors living along or with someone (family members often are the offenders in abuse towards their senior love one), resulting in a reduction of emotional, and physical, financial and sexual abuse of seniors. At this juncture, the National Center of Elder Abuse Administration of Aging (NCEA) should be involved as well as the Alzheimer’s Association to educate the public on aspects of people who get older and can no longer maintain many parts of their lives, including their health. To implement this initiative, a national focus should turn toward current and new applications for products and services applied in the name of a senior, who is not likely to accumulate debt. For example; an application to purchasing a new home, taking out large loans, buying big tickets items, taking out various credit cards and the involuntary meeting with a financial planner. These should be consider red flags for seniors victims of exploitation and may also uncover other inappropriate behavior that would warrant Adult Protective Services (APS) to become

As a community we want to ensure that our elderly and vulnerable adults are protected. In Buncombe County, 17.5 percent of residents are over the age of 65 and 12 percent of the population 18 and over have one or more types of disabilities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Our neighbors, relatives, and friends all deserve to be cared for appropriately and we are a key part to ensuring that they are safe. North Carolina’s Adult Protective Services law provides protection to all adults over the age of 18 who have a disability and who might be abused, neglected or exploited and who might be in the need of protective services. This can look like a caretaker that withholds appropriate medical care for an adult with a disability, a disabled
An important question that is emerging related to retirement is whether or not social security will be active in the future. As a result, it is a question that I am beginning to ask as well for many reasons; the foremost being because my generation is one that it will have a tremendous impact on. Social security benefits are often over looked; most people solely rely on social security after they retire as a replacement for income, even though social security was not created as a replacement for a job. Others claim social security benefits while still working full- or part-time; however, it is becoming evident that social security is needed for most Americans after they retire to continue living a comfortable lifestyle. If social security is not available in the future when I retire, what will be the outcome?
Senior year, the last year of high school is a time when Seniors experience various things for last time in this year. The last first day, the last football game, the last school dance. With all of these lasts comes something else. Senioritis. Senioritis is what nearly every senior at one time or another experiences, They all handle it differently, from lack of motivation to do homework to lack of hygiene.
Taylor Sneed sat in her room Sunday night. She was only a few weeks into school, and was already having doubts about graduating. I have to do my AP Government guided reading, a week’s worth of Calculus homework, my essay, and study for the Physics and Econ test, she thought. She had known about these assignments for over a week, yet she did not even think about them until that evening. That evening he learned about his new medical condition: Senioritis.
Health care has gone through a great evolution through the years. Before 1965, individuals older than 65 years old received inadequate healthcare and more than half of this population did not have coverage (Reinhard, 2012). Due to this predicament, the need to identify issues and implement health policy was imperative to improve health care. Consequently, Medicare was introduced with the goal to mitigate the health issues during the 1960’s and to improve the healthcare availability for individuals 65 years and older. Since then, Medicare has gone through numerous changes in order to incorporate other population needs.
These seven goals are as follows: “filling service gaps, educating the public, training professionals, enhancing adult protective services, increasing prosecuting, maximizing resources, and eliminating policy barriers” (78). If the government and society worked towards improving these goals, then elderly abuse will
As people age, health becomes more of a concern as people more prone to health problems. Supporting Evidence: This was the time were many people were discovering themselves, so they did drugs, had unprotected sex etc. So most of our taxes will go to these Baby Boomers to pay for their health-care (PhillyMag) This also means that it is to the elder’s advantage because they can take use of the free healthcare The fact that they are growing old means that they are developing issues physically and in some cases mentally (Stat Canada)

In the last few decades, seniors have been the targets of financial scams more frequently than any other age group. Why? Not only do scammers believe that seniors have money just sitting in their bank accounts, but the types of financial scams they tend to perpetrate are extremely difficult to prosecute and frequently go unreported. Worse still, it’s not always a stranger who’s behind the crime: research shows that 90% of all elder abuse-including financial scams-is committed by a family member. Now, there’s some good news.
This neglect can be measured by the elders voice not being heard, by the health professional making assumptions based on what they believe the elder wants and needs and also due to the fact that, as found within studies, many younger health professionals have agesist beliefs that prevent them from working with the aging population in the first place as they have reported “older adults to be too depressing”.(Chonody & Wang,2014) An elders voice not being heard speaks to the belief that older people have the characteristics of helplessness, vulnerability and frailty and are therefore “in need of protection” (Harbison et al.2012), this so called protection we give our elders does not help, but rather
Residential facilities and Assisted Living communities have blossomed into a massive business, it is the fastest growing living option for seniors. Facilities such as these provides a wide range of services and it is senior housing solution for adults who can live independently, but also require some assistance (Gleckman, H., 2014). The century of the baby boomers is here the nation prepared? The answer is a large no. The geriatric society appears to have been a forgotten body of people that the nation has not been prepared for.
Baby boomers are defined as “the era of Americans who were conceived somewhere around 1946 and 1964". This group has been large and significant percentage of the U.S population. Their aging will have dramatic implications for health care providers with regards to the costs implications of the resources that they will consume, the expectations that they will have in terms of services they receive, and how they expect to interact with health care system. The needs and wants of the baby boomer generation are extremely complex, and in order to create an effective marketing message, advertisers need to conduct comprehensive market research in order to gain their market share (Berkowitz, 2010).

But what might old man symbolize in literature? The “Old Man” is regarded as the age-old wisdom of humanity, the overbearing knowledge being beared by one individual with a substantial amount of life experience. According to Jung, the “Old Man”, particularly when invested with special powers or prestige, is the symbol of ‘mana’ personality, i.e.
Elder abuse can be referred to as a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. Elderly people often get abuse by people who should be their protector and carer, in most circumstances many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care.
