The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver shows the women of the Congo as being the workers of the family. They take care of the children, going so far as to carry them around constantly once they reach a certain age, and they are responsible for all the housework. The females are seen as capable and have many responsibilities. In spite of this, the reality for the real women of the Congo is that they are in constant fear of being a victim of sexual violence. Sexual violence can happen anywhere, but in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) it occurs on a daily basis (Ganzamungu and Maharaj 737). Sexual violence means, “any sexual act, attempt to obtain a sexual act, unwanted sexual comments or advances, or acts to traffic women sexuality, …show more content…
There needs to be more of an understanding from the communities, friends, and family, of the effects of sexual violence. The victims need understanding and not ridicule. Rejection can lead to many other problems. Some of the community believes the women now have a sickness which is a fear that lingers inside the victim. Many husbands do not want to be intimate or even touch their wives after a rape occurs. The victims become isolated. Many men run the female victims off from their homes; others choose to divorce them. Some men turn their back even on their children after their wife is attacked and search for a new wife. The women become wary of trusting anyone. Many women end up having to live on their own without shelter, protection or money, and many have children to tend to. One person even stated she “prefer that [they] kill the person who [was] raped because a rape was worse than a killing” (Kohli …show more content…
Besides having, bruising, bleeding and soreness, rape victims are likely to have, anxiety, uncontrollable thoughts of the tragic events, and reoccurring nightmares. Most of these women are already malnourished before an attack takes place, and the effects of the rape takes a major toll on the body. This has a tremendous impact for all victims, but especially for virgins. Virgins are women who have never had sexual relations prior to the rape. They feel they have lost all sense of identity and no one will ever take them as a wife. When virgins end up pregnant after an attack, they have the fear of being ridiculed for having a baby and no husband. One of the woman interviewed states, “In the communities we are being called wives of Interahamwe or rebels” (Zihindula and Maharaj 740). They are given names for something violent that has happened and was out of their control. With so much stigmatisms from the community, the woman has lost hope of ever having a normal place in the
In literary works, the theme of loss of innocence serves as a powerful exploration of the human condition, revealing the profound effects it has on individuals and their understanding of the world. This theme is exemplified in both William Golding's "Lord of the Flies" and Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible," where the characters are confronted with harsh realities that shatter their innocent perceptions. Through examining the causes, effects, and realizations of the loss of innocence in these novels, we gain insight into the tragic transformation of individuals in the face of challenging circumstances. As we delve into the depths of these narratives, it becomes evident that the loss of innocence is a universal experience that transcends
The article explains how sexual assault continues to be a problem until this very day. When someone is sexually assaulted, it is very hard for them to cope with the fact that someone has touched them in the wrong way. For the ones who commits the assault, it will only become worse for them. A National Study says, “The main source of inmates’ knowledge of prison sex appears to come from their conversations with other inmates”(Response to the Prison Rape Elimination Act). Some inmates could portray the role of acting as if they are there for the victim to talk to, but there are other things that could result from this.
Once one examines rape cases, and the affects that they have on the victims, it is no longer surprising why people feel safer not
The Poisonwood Bible has had many themes surrounding the story, its characters, and the messages. Themes that come and go throughout the book are that things happen for a reason, everyone is equal, and don’t judge a book by its cover. Orleanna is the base of the story. She’s the wise and motherly figure, obviously, to some people; especially her daughters. She becomes depressed after one of her daughters died.
The Poisonwood Bible ultimately communicates that as humans live they acquire their own history, and therefore their own story. History is originally retold through the perspectives of people who experience it, therefore it is littered with, and consequently altered by, their own personal emotions and memories attached to the moments. Adah Price, arguably the most introspective narrator in the novel, sums up human life to be “what [they] stole from history, and how [they] live with it,” which further reiterates the concept that humans redefine history by telling their own stories and recollections of what is most true to them and how they are managing what they experience. The notion that humans “steal” something from history is clearly conveyed through Adah’s dialogue, which indicates that as humans adopt history as their own stories, and thereby change it, they are stealing some of the authenticity that accompanies history (Kingsolver 492).
The topic my group chose is spousal homicide. In spousal homicide we cannot say how we can help the victim or try to solve their problem because the victim is already dead. A step before or what leads spousal homicide is domestic violence or spousal abuse. There for this next few paragraphs will be talking about what is domestic violence or spousal abuse, why spousal abuse happens, why the victims stay with their abuser and how we can help those victims from domestic violence/ spousal abuse.

According to Rudman and Mescher, The women have been maltreated from men in percentage of 85% from the sexual aggression. Furthermore, when men maltreated the woman in this way, this will negatively impact on the women’s lives, and also it will cause them to be more horrible of crime and it could cause a suicide. In sum, Dehumanization affect badly on the emotion of people who has been maltreated.
People don’t understand why it’s such a big issue and problem to deal with until they experience it themselves. However, they shouldn’t experience it for themselves. The world wants to put an end to rape
Moreover, a girl named Maria committed suicide after being ordered by the Panchayat to be raped in revenge for her father’s attempt to rape a minor. These cases unfold that under the cloak of justice and local customs, women, and children are treated as a tool of compensation. This form of structural violence has got passive acceptance among marginalized groups. However, these cases resulted in huge outcry by the women and human right activists resulting in parliament passing
Many people may tell that rape is a personal issue but is it really a personal issue? Rape crime is one of the darkest parts of the society and it may be a single crime but it makes people hold down their lives with so much fear that it cannot be called a personal issue as it is related to the society too and it is indeed affecting the society in many scandalous ways. One rape incident can bring about fear in the hearts of a thousand other people, thus affecting society. Rape takes place for many different reasons.

Introduction Sexual violence is a broad-spectrum term used to describe any sexually explicit act that is inflicted upon another person without consent or refusal by an offender using coercion (Basile et al 2014, 11; World Health Organisation 2018). The purpose of this essay is to examine the social constructions, impacts and responses to the deviant nature of sexual violence. Sexual violence and education amongst the youth, including legislative controls and changing societal views will be analysed to evaluate these attributes and their impact on the deviant nature of this act. The research presented will be used to propose recommendations, made in context of Australian society, that strive to implement further control to address the positive
