Wouldn’t it be nice to earn millions of dollars to play a sport for fun? Being a professional athlete is something almost everybody has dreamed about and only a modest percentage have achieved. Sports are part of everyday life for most people in the country and millions of people idolize the players. Professional athletes are making over and above what they deserve. this money should be given to doctors and the armed forces. People’s salaries should be based on the job’s economic importance and value to society not based on their talent and ability to play a sport. Teachers, doctors, and the armed forces are all examples of professions that provide valuable services to society. One of the biggest reasons is that the world depends on how well the generations to come are raised and educated. If kids aren’t educated they won’t …show more content…
The ones that become professional athletes have worked from a young age and put in thousands of hours practicing which goes along with the old saying “Time Is Money”. These players sacrifice their bodies and spend hours in rehab or taking pain medication because of it. That kind of strenuous activity all the time puts strain on your body and athletes pay for that in the future. Athletes also lose most of their privacy due to the media. Athletes have to do countless numbers of interviews to keep the people happy. If an athlete screws up, it goes all over the media and now this player is scrutinized over a situation that many of others have done. The biggest reasons athletes get paid too much is the people that watch the sports. People go to games and pay the high prices for tickets or merchandise to show off their true colors. Even if they watch the game at home they have still bought jerseys or hats or some kind of apparel. Athletes will continue to get overpaid until the people stop overpaying for their own personal
“Lest you think I exaggerate, look up the case of the two athletes at the University of Iowa who started a T-shirt screening business and were threatened with ineligibility by the N.C.A.A. because their website mentioned that they met because they were both — brace yourself — swimmers” (Rosenberg, 2017). Paying collegiate athletes would also help develop athletes better if they do stay longer instead of rushing to go pro and then failing to be something because the they were not for that type of exposure. Injury is another reason why they should get paid. No matter what sport you play, you’re always putting your life on the line when you play that sport. “Paying players could guarantee them a degree of financial security, and prevent some from leaving prematurely” (Labaton,
Colleges generate billions off of players, therefore it should not hurt to compensate student athletes, furthermore, these players are risking their health and well-being without receiving a penny in return, and lastly, getting paid to play can teach these young student athletes financial responsibility. To begin with, colleges generate billions off of players, therefore, it should not hurt to indemnify their student athletes. Paying each athlete even at minimum wage is better than nothing, in addition, it would not even make a dent in the billions the colleges produce because of the players. All jersey sales, ticket sales, television revenue, and basically all outlets of income get dispersed to the coaches, the staff, the schools, the NCAA and any and everyone involved
Some people say absolutely. They think the athlete’s performance will produce a bigger or smaller paycheck. Athletes get the right amount of money that they need. Like everybody else in this world, they deserve to get paid for what they do best.
The time for homework of an athlete is very little time. For example, I am a cross country runner here at College of The Desert, I am up by 5:00 in the morning to leave for practice, I end practice around 7:30, or 8 depending on the workout, I then need to get home and get ready for my next class, and after that my next class, I end up getting home around 9:30pm, and get started on homework, which could take up to a couple of hours, and I go to bed around 2am, and then get some sleep for the next practice, it may not be everyday but it does take a tole on an athlete's body. College football players should be paid for the risks that they put their bodies in, when they are in the game or on the practice field. The college football player, has pads and a helmet, but can be hurt internally. For example, I was in pop warner football when I was younger, and it was the last game of the year before my team
So many people would say why bother to argue this topic? Because there are several reasons that need to be considered. College athletes should get paid because they risk a lot. They risk the rest of their lives to entertain and make it a living, but they can get hurt at any time. It could be an injury that could ruin the rest of their lives.
“The highest paid public employee in 40 of the 50 U.S. states is the state university 's head football or basketball coach” (Mitchell & Edelman). These coaches earn so much money and they do put in a lot of work for their teams, but they are not the ones doing the real work. The athletes are the ones out on the field or court playing the game, which is why the players need to be paid as
Can you imagine yourself living in a world filled with any amount of money you can imagine. One question that many people argue over and is becoming a huge debate is the question, “Are athletes overpaid?” Many people can disagree that they are getting paid a sufficient amount of money for what they do. Children are trying to replicate these athletes for what they have accomplished. Others say that they are getting way too much money for playing a game.
For evidence, according to “Are Teens Too Young to Go Pro” by Mary Kate Frank, athletes that are paid have less time to explore other interests in their lives. The article states, “Devoting all your time to a sport means that there is little time to explore other interests… As adults, might players who went pro as teens regret missing out on those experiences?” (Frank “Are Teens Too Young to Go Pro”). The athletes did not have any time to explore other interests because of the immense amount of pressure put on them by these NIL deals.
Athletes who play football or basketball are at a higher risk of career ending injuries. These two sports are the hardest on an athletes body. Only one out of twenty-five college athletes go pro, so why put your body at risk when you don’t receive anything for doing that and your chances of going pro are slim? A lot of these student athletes are stressed out because of schoolwork participating in a college sport. This is just another reason that these athletes deserve to be
People know that doctors and firefighters save lives, while athletes play a game to make money. Even teachers pay isn’t anywhere near to athletes; they educate the generation’s youth so they can make a difference in the future. So many jobs that are very important don’t get paid as much and that money can go towards better causes. But these are only some of the reasons that pro athletes get paid too much.
For instance, Shaq is in the new icy hot back pain reliever. Pro athletes also get big businesses to sponsor and commercialize their products. Critics argue that in today's society one should be paid according to the job’s economic importance and their value to society. However many government jobs don't make as much as they deserve. Furthermore critics argue that athletes should not be making more that the President of the United States - the one who leads the free world!
I don’t know why professional athletes get paid millions of dollars just to entertain all of their fans. There are plenty of other people that I think should be getting paid that much, such as people who save lives and help others. I do not think that is fair that the people that assist others don’t get that much of a salary while the football and basketball players are. If the player got injured while playing, that would be their fault because they know injuries are likely to occur. Athletes are not deserving of making the income they earn.
There could be a policeman with an entire family, and an athlete will make more than them in one paycheck, while that family is making significantly less in 10 years. These reasons prove that more important jobs deserve to get paid more than athletes. Now. some athletes spend their money responsibly.
Professional athletes are extremely overpaid for the “jobs” that they do. They only entertain for a living and get paid millions of dollars per season. Each sport is different in how they pay their athletes, and the difference in salaries from one player to another can be in the tens of millions of dollars. These athletes are paid for jobs that they only do for a certain number of games and do not even play the games over the course of an entire year. In most professional sports, they play in games for only a few months and then have a few months off.
