Arthur Miller 's historical play, The Crucible, portrays the historical events of the Salem witch trials through a crowd of unforgettable characters. Fear drives these Puritans to reveal their true emotions while facing their accusers in the bias courts before merciless judges. While eventually all the people of Salem become subject to this madness, two women stand out above the rest. Revenge and shame live in the heart of the teenage adulteress, Abigail Williams, while truth and righteousness reside in the soul of Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor 's faithful wife.Although they both heighten the tension and suspense of the play, Abigail William 's and Elizabeth Proctor 's differences lead to turmoil due to their desire for one man 's love.

In some ways, Abigail and Elizabeth could seem as though they were similar. Their character motives was one thing that made them particularly different. Abigail Williams desire for John Proctor and hatred of Elizabeth can be described as shameful. She loved for all of the wrong reasons. When her uncle, Mr. Parris, accused her of committing a crime with John, she would lie and blame it on Elizabeth. She once said "She hates me uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. It 's a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!" (Miller, Act 1, 12). Consequently, she feared discovery of her transgressions, dancing in the woods, wishing Goody Proctor dead, and drinking the blood. Elizabeth Proctor wanted to regain Proctors love and respect. She wanted to be the good loving wife that he knew she could be. Most importantly, she wanted Abigail out of their lives
She wanted what she could not have and did not care about who she hurt. The only person Abigail seemed to care for besides herself was John Proctor. John was happily married to Elizabeth, however Abigail believed that if Elizabeth was dead that John would love her. Abigail use to work for John and they engaged in an affair. When Elizabeth found out about the affair she immediately threw Abigail out and John promised Elizabeth that the he would never touch another woman again.
Abigail wanted to get revenge on Elizabeth Proctor, and William O'Neal was motivated by money and wanted to avoid jail time. "She hates me, uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. It's a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!" (Miller, 12). This quote reveals Elizabeth's anger towards Abigail and why Abigail holds a grudge against Elizabeth.
Life is like a mountain range with its many ups and downs. Each person has their own trek amongst the mountains, and some of these treks are more difficult than others. When faced with these difficult treks amongst the mountains, many people do as Dale Carnegie once stated; “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. ” In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the characters Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor each find themselves facing their own mountain, and it is from these uphill tests that each character becomes transformed.
John Proctor starts off in the play as a guilty man who is self judging and the ends the play finally saying that he is a good man. John's wife, Elizabeth Proctor says, "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him" (134). Elizabeth's words explain that John has finally realized although he did a bad thing he is still a good man and not a witch. John changes from a self judging character to a forgiving one.
The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, is centered in a small village in salem where there are numerous accusations of witchcraft. Those accusations later led to witch trials being held that resulted in deaths of all who were assumed to be witches. The three characters that were the most responsible for the trials that occurred were Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Tituba. Elizabeth Proctor shows the epitome of a perfect wife through her relationship with Abigail Williams, her relationship with God and her relationship with her husband, John Proctor.

It is common to tell a lie but, the intention of sabotage is a different story. Abigail had many tricks up her sleeve to manipulate the court. Her purpose to convince the town of her innocence was one of many.
Miller best depicts the evils in people through the main prosecutor in the the play Abigail Williams. Abigail is undeniably the most destructive and corrupt individual in The Crucible. Through her vengefulness, threatening her peers, carelessness at others’ expense, and complete disregard for human life, she ensues a tumultuous event to Salem. Abigail’s initial accusation against the town beggar was solely to defend herself from punishment for dancing in the woods.

A dynamic character like Abigail has lied before in the past and now has experiences something more sinister which is unique for a character in the story and makes the plot better with Abigail’s wickedness. Through the Trials of the Salem, the story will always have a person that will stand out when it is mentioned, and Abigail Williams takes the cake of being the most horrific, yet a great character in the story because it isn’t The Crucible without Abigail as being the antagonist and the tension builder. The Village will never forgive of what she did to all the innocent women she has killed.
