William Shakespeare was well versed in the English language, whether it be poetry or playwrights. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar and Hamlet are playwrights that entail odd, but heavy struggles for both characters. Using Brutus’s and Hamlet’s interaction with their female counterparts, their thirst for vengeance, and specific character traits, Shakespeare develops two tragic heroes of different time periods. The unlikely pairing of Hamlet and Brutus is attributed to their specific characteristics that categorize them as tragic heroes. Both characters die in the end of their tragedy, both receive punishments that exceed the actual crime, and both are of noble stature, to name a few. When Brutus succumbs to his fate of death, he is not reluctant but rather ready to die as he has wronged his greatest friend in life, Caesar. “Come poor remains of friends rest on this rock./... Farewell good Strato- Caesar, now be still;/ I killed not thee with half so good a will (The Tragedy of Julius Caesar V.v.1-51).” Brutus was willing to kill his closest friend, the leader of Rome to protect the people and he in turn was punished with the worst chastisement of all: his own death. Hamlet also repents his crimes with his own life, but he face far larger crimes. He has wronged Ophelia so greatly that she killed herself, murdered Polonius and murdered Laertes. “Here, thou incestuos, murderous, damned Dane,/ Drink of this potion: is thy union here?/ Follow my mother... Heaven make thee free of it, I follow thee... O I die Horatio... Which have solicited- the rest is silence. (Hamlet V.ii.308-342.) This series of lines demonstrates Hamlet’s thinking process directly before his death. At first, he is angered by his impending death, then it is followed by acceptance and admittance. Both Hamlet and Brutus are of noble stature, Hamlet was to be the King of Denmark, Brutus is politician in Rome and an advisor to Caesar. Both Hamlet and Brutus share similar qualities. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar and Hamlet, both characters share a strong influence from their female counterparts, a hunger for revenge and specific character traits of a tragic hero. However, they differ in the extremity of their crimes. As a proctor of the English language, Shakespeare is able to hone abilities to create to tragic
Hamlet and Oedipus share some common background, as in they both come from well-off families. Oedipus was born with the blood of gods and also raised by King Polybus and Queen Merope in Corinth. Hamlet was the prince of Denmark, soon to be king. They also have somewhat similar motivation when it comes to the the decision and need to kill the current king from each story. Hamlet’s motivation is the fact that he was questioning about his father’s death as well as his mom’s strange reaction since she had already moved on to a new marriage with Hamlet’s uncle.

In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, two characters named Antony and Brutus gave speeches at Julius Caesar’s funeral. The two characters have been on opposite sides throughout the entire story. Antony was Caesar’s servant and would do anything for him. While Brutus was with the conspirators (the people who wanted to kill Caesar), but his reason to kill Caesar was just for the good of the people. Brutus offered to let Antony speak after him in the funeral, which led to Brutus being criticized and allowing the people to be persuaded by Antony.

Brutus is a true tragic hero in the play because he admits that he did wrong by killing Caesar. In William Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Marcus Brutus is the tragic hero. Obviously, Brutus’s actions brought opposite results of what he intended. On the other hand, some might say that was the same for Caesar.
So I will be talking about a play created by William Shakespeare. The play is about a person who is going to be crowned the ruler, but gets killed before he gets to that point. Brutus and Antony are two of the main characters, and have different perspectives on Caesar. Brutus believed that Caesar was ambitious, and he would let the power go to his head. Antony believed Caesar was loyal and kind.
Caesar contained few characteristics of a tragic hero compared to Brutus. “I rather tell what is to be feared than what I fear; / For always I am Caesar” (Shakespeare I.2.211-212). Caesar, like Brutus, is hubris and thinks fondly of himself. Caesar, so far, only expresses one tragic hero quality.
In Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar, Brutus is obviously shown to be a tragic hero. Brutus shows many traits throughout the play that can prove this statement. In many cases, Julius Caesar is seen as the only tragic hero in this play. One can see that Brutus is in fact a tragic hero because he is of noble birth, has a tragic flaw, and dies with courage. First of all, Brutus is of noble birth.
Antony and Brutus’ interactions with one another reflected Brutus’ characteristics of being naïve and foolish, yet loyal. These interactions ultimately led to Brutus’ honorable death. First thing is first, Brutus and Antony differ tremendously. Although they both have similar characteristics of being influential, Antony is far more persuasive. Unlike Brutus, Antony appealed to the crowd’s emotions in the funeral speech.
Julius Caesar, is a play based on the true events that occurred in Roman history. The play follows the fictional lives of Caesar and his people leading up to, and after his assassination. Several characters can be labeled as both villainous and heroic at different points in the play due to their actions, however, this does not apply to the character of Marcus Junius Brutus, who remains a hero through the entire play. Brutus is a hero for several reasons, The first reason Brutus is considered to be a hero is because he continuously stands up for what he believes in. Secondly, it is clear that Brutus is a hero because he kills himself as a sacrifice to the roman public.
Some similarities in Oedipus and Hamlet are that they both share the same element of tragedy. In both plays they had the same goal to kill the king and both characters were deceived by their parents. Hamlet was upset that his mother had a relationship with his uncle and Oedipus was upset that his parents never told him he wasn’t really their child, he was basically adopted. Another similarity was how both characters were concerned for their states. Hamlet said there was “something rotten in Denmark” and in Oedipus state of Thebes had many illness one being plague.
Studying plays as Oedipus Rex and Hamlet is a vital part of studying literature since they are timeless works that teach many lessons. Moreover, they still have some concepts to be unmasked by critics of literature. According to Aristotle tragedy is ''a form of drama based on human misery that arouses in its audience feelings of pity and fear'' and each tragedy must have a tragic hero. Tragedy began in the ancient Greek theatre where tragedies were performed in late March to early April at an annual religious festival in honour of Dionysus. () One of the most famous tragedies in that period is Oedipus Rex which was written by Sophocles.
He did not innately hate all women, but slowly as he reserved rejection after rejection he snapped. Hamlet’s relationships differed between Gertrude and Ophelia, but both had the same goal of Hamlet having someone to love and care about him. With the goal of compassion being accomplished, he spiralled in a growing hatred of the female population. Hamlet’s misogyny is not the result sexual repression , but rather his environment and the interactions with women. Ernest Jones argues that Hamlet’s misogyny stems from the sexual repression of Gertrude and Ophelia.
