McCarthyism Trials In both The Crucible and McCarthyism, we see that dishonest people get ahead by using distractions of other people. In both instances, falsely accuse other people of wrongdoing in order to divert attention away from their own wrongdoings.

Do you know the similarities between McCarthy and Abigail? Through this essay I am going to be pointing out their similarities. The Crucible and McCarthyism have many similarities about their actions, thoughts, and behavior. They had many things in common but the three I choose were they accused people,started off strong and finished with no victories, they both ruin people's lives. 1 Abigail accused people and anybody names were offered with not knowing what could happen after they were released. When they first started to this huge lie they didn't expect it to go as far as it went.

In the spring of the early 50s John McCarthy would go around America accusing innocent people of being communist spies. This era would be named McCarthyism and the red scare was also part of this era. This would set the stage for a story down the road. The crucible by Arthur Miller is an allegory for the red scare in the McCarthy era because of the false accusations, general hysteria among the townspeople, and proving of injusticing by authority/ accuser. Enter John McCarthy who first started his false accusations of supposed communists in America in the state of Wheeling, Virginia.

They didn’t have evidence to prove their accusations, but the government ignored the facts and decided to believe rumors. This play is a contemporary example of what was happening to the American society during McCarthyism.

Mass hysteria ensued involving these communists and many trials were had regarding these supposed “criminals”. This label cause some to lose their job, have their homes vandalized, and even worse threats on their life.

The new and dangerous disease spreading into the U.S. sparked a fear of becoming infected. The epidemic had become so bad the CDC had opened its Emergency Operations Center to handle the situation. Many schools in the United States offered free vaccinations once one was created.

In relation to The Crucible, two non-fiction events that carry the same theme is the Patriot Act and McCarthyism. The Patriot act is a law that was passed after the events of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2011, and McCarthyism is the paranoia and invasive suspicion that followed suit. All three occurrences have similarities between the power of the government and the separation of the people.

This is similar to a time in the 1950s when Joseph McCarthy accuses government officials of communism and that ultimately leads to hundreds of citizens losing their jobs. The Crucible reveals the similarities between The Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s and McCarthyism of the 1950s because it demonstrates how a society can be tremendously impacted by the feeling the fear.

In the Crucible those who were accused of being guilty, put on trial, and who are expected to confess. Unsuccessful to that led to death. In McCarthy, the media were not disposed to stand up to Senator McCarthy for the fear of being accused of being a Communist. Fear is the main factor playing in both situations, terror of being accused or what people might say, or think.

Also, since The Crucible was written to be parallel to McCarthyism, the same idea is shown. The same situation can be seen in The Crucible as Arthur Miller was influenced by the events that occurred during McCarthyism. In the Crucible, anyone whose name that had been mentioned underwent an investigation and was asked to prove that they were not partaking in witchcraft. Because this task was impossible, the court made rash decisions such as sending people to jail or sentencing them to be hanged. This scenario is seen in the crucible when Rebecca Nurse is accused.

The Crucible is riddled with irony, and Arthur Miller utilizes situational and dramatic irony to show the difference between followers and leaders.

Convict communists were ordered to confess their crime and name others to avoid the retribution.
