In his article "In Pursuit of Happiness: Better Living from Plato to Prozac," Mark Kingwell describes how there has been many debates on the meaning of happiness for many years yet still a singular, justifiable definition eludes society. The pursuit to define and understand happiness has invited several debates, questions, arguments, and suggestions alike. In 1996, a hand full of genetic and behavioral studies suggest evidence that one’s achievable degree of happiness is genetically decided, with evidences showing that no achievement will change your happiness, you are either happy or you’re not. Some studies demonstrated a correlation between dopamine levels in the brain and expressions of personal satisfaction, while others indicated that

“Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” a doctrine established by our founding fathers and adopted by the United States as the original meaning of the American Dream. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald illustrates the dissent of the American Dream. As time progresses the meaning of the American Dream became lost, but it still has pertinence to the present. The Declaration of Independence set the basis of what the American Dream meant and why it still has relevance to its people’s live today.

The “pursuit of Happiness” is a representation of a citizen striving to achieve what they see as their goal. Achieving a goal in life is happiness whether it is some form of property such as having a great job or family. Jefferson’s idea of happiness for Americans is the opportunity to accomplish goals that have been set by the individual them self. Citizens are giving the chance to become the person they desire to be, whether it be a very renowned super star or a simple-minded quiet individual. Jefferson’s goal of happiness has been achieved by the United States since freedom is the essence of America.

“Money can’t buy happiness.” “Money isn’t everything, its just paper.” Anyone who has ever grown up without money and lamented about it has heard these kinds of phrases many times. In looking around our culture and society today it would be hard to say those statements are true. While everyone has problems, rich and poor alike, having money gives you access to more solutions to those problems.

When most people hear the word “lottery” they think of fame, fortune, and an instantly better life. However, in some cases, a lottery may not always be as great as it seems. In a short story by Shirley Jackson, winning the lottery didn’t mean all your problems were over, rather, it meant they were just beginning. The story centers around a town that holds a lottery on June 27th of every year. Each family must draw a slip of paper, the family with a dot on their paper remains in the drawing.

In his Ted-Talk “How to buy happiness”, Michael Norton (2011) states that happiness can be bought with money by giving it to other people. I fully agree with Norton. I received my first paycheck around Christmas last year and the first thing I bought with that money was a present for my mother. Christmas is a great example: giving and receiving gifts bonds everyone together, because it shows that we care about each other. Even helping someone you barely know is really satisfying, you did a good deed, it is good for your self-esteem.

The Lottery In the short story “The Lottery”by Shirley Jackson, the characters of the story all have mixed emotions about this lottery. The character, Tessie Hutchinson, her emotions about this lottery is that she thinks it is unfair. Mrs. Hutchinson thinks the lottery is unfair because they didn't give her family enough time to pick a slip. But i think it was fair because everyone takes their own time.

As such the American Dream continues the idea that any person who resides within the United States has equal access and opportunity to succeed no matter their socio-economic class, political beliefs, or background. These ideas are not the original reckoning of the founding fathers, but rather inspired by the great thinkers of the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was one of the greatest ideological influences of the writers of the constitution (Smith, 2). The idea of entitlement to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness from birth comes from John Locke (“Voices of the Revolution: Two Great Thinkers”). Locke is notable for his ideology and its impact on the United States.

What made you happy as a child? Children do not think of money as bringing happiness to their lives. The only things that matter are how they perceive pleasure, how much they feel loved, and what brings them joy. As people grow older, they may assume that the more money they have, the happier they will be. While there are many articles and research studies done on Happiness, I have chosen to write about Daniel Haybron’s article “Happiness and It’s Discontent,” and Diener and Biswas-Diener’s article “Can Money Buy Happiness.”

Can money bring you happiness: many Americans believe that having lots of money can bring happiness? However one writer, Gregg Easterbrook, in his article, “The Real Truth about Money,” promotes that having a lot of money in your pocket doesn’t bring happiness in this world. He writes this article to persuade his audience that money doesn’t bring happiness. Easterbrook begins building his credibility with personal facts and reputable sources, citing convincing facts and statistics, and successfully employing Logical appeals; however, toward the end of the article, he attempts to appeal to readers’ emotions weaken his credibility and ultimately, his argument. In his article, Easterbrook starts his article by showing people how life has changed since the World War II and the Depression eras of life, and then he outlines that people that people spend lots of their time trying to keep up with the norms of life and draws the comparison that people who have higher income have depression or unhappy with themselves.

Choosing to Live Happily Does it ever appear to you as if people live their lives trying to attain happiness? The decisions people make every day seem to revolve around what will make them the happiest. No one knows the true meaning of happiness but we all want to have it. Many people try to attain happiness through actions or things. Some people buy everything that they want to try and make themselves happy.

People think that if they have money, then they will be happy. For me, no amount of money can buy a person what truly makes them happy. Sure, money is nice but happiness is not about money. I find it ridiculous when people say, “I’m not happy because I do not have enough money.” The way I see it, is that people do not fully understand what it is to be happy before they can have money.

But if you think of all the pros as to how and why money can buy happiness it can change the mindset of an individual and they can decide whether or not the statement is true. Some of the pros as to how money can buy happiness is that you can buy time, live your life to the fullest and live life freely without worries. As we all know money is a necessity to be able to live in the world, without it we would all probably be in quite a dilemma, as would have to strive and find ways to live. This is why money is an important aspect of life which allows people to live a happy
