There are many differences that can be pointed out when evaluating the Maesta and the Sistine Ceiling. One of the main differences between these two paintings is that the Maesta establishes union through their religion that depicts the Virgin Mary as the central figure of their belief system, whereas the Sistine ceiling is a painting that is devoted to the catholic church with god as their drive in their religion. This difference is important because it shows how important religion was to both the Romans and Sienese. Both of these paintings depict a contrasting view on who they worshipped. The Maesta creates an image around the Virgin Mary as she was believed to be the most respectable person and powerful. In the Sistine Ceiling, we get to …show more content…
The Maesta was painted in Siena which most of its time was at war with Florence, it is believed that Siena won the war because of the grace of Mary, this comes to show the importance of Mary to the Sienese people. In the Maesta the Virgin Mary is portrayed as the central point in the painting. Duccio uses bold colors such as red, gold and dark blue to draw attention to the Virgin Mary. Duccio’s bold use of color introduced greater elegance, another key element to his paintings was that the characters are also drawn with, unrealistic facial features which stands out drastically while analyzing the painting. When analyzing the Maesta you also see the characters in the main panel have a gold circle shaped background behind their heads, each panel has a gold background that depicts the amount of wealth and intelligence the Sienese wanted to claim about to each other. The central panel of this painting shows the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus as being larger than the others surrounding them, the people around are looking up at Mary as with out up most respect . Also in the central panel, we get to see how much work, money and thought was put into the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is painted with dark blue color which is considered to be very expensive at the time due to all the lapis that would have been essential to produce. Michelangelo was a sculptor before painting, his sculptor skills and talents are definitely seen in the Sistine Ceiling. In this painting, all the people are drawn more realistically than the Maesta, he is able to illustrate both strength and elegance while also representing the ideal beauty. The most important part of the Sistine Ceiling are the series of nine scenes that move across the central panels, it starts with the creation of the world and god separating light from darkness. Michelangelo wanted to honor God through the Sistine Ceiling by constructing a connection between man and God in all his panels. He used this connection because god in the Rome religious society was considered to be an almighty and powerful being. In this painting Michelangelo painted each of his character which such grace and detail making the painting more realistic, not only were the characters realistic but they were also perceived as masculine. The detailed arm and leg muscles and male features add to the masculinity, even the women are portrayed as masculine one example of this is the Lilyan silby , we see her twisted body as well as every muscle in her back . It is said that Michelangelo used male models to not only help him paint the Lilyan silby but also for other of his female characters. Another important characteristic in the Sistine
This was the convent for the women of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Conception. Inside of the convent is a memorial to the Virgin Mary that the women would worship. This was the clearest connection to the Maesta as both works of art were used as a shrine to the Virgin Mary. The obvious difference in the art is the medium that they are executed. The Virgin Mary in the Convento de la Conception is a statue of the Virgin while the Maesta, the Virgin is in paint.
The Middle Ages was the time period after the fall of the Roman Empire around 500 CE to the 1350’s. During this time the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope held the most power throughout Europe, the priests often lived in a closed area inside the walls of the monasteries. “Schools were few. Illiteracy was widespread” (Background essay) because of this average person of this time was illiterate .and more than 85 percent of the population were farmers and peasants called serfs and they worked in an estate for the owner called the lord.
It’s one of the most treasured paintings in the world. When compared to the Italian standards, the panel is said to be very minor, but its regard is extensively expressed with respect to many other paintings that are said to be, in the ancient times, the most regarded.
This is said to be Leonardo Da Vinci’s first major work because it is the first large painting, painted by Leonardo 's hands. The story of this painting is that Mary is being visited by archangel Gabriel, in order to explain to her that she was " destined to be the mother of the son of god"( cite) . Gabriel is kneeling at the garden of Mary. There is a distance between both of them and she ironically receives the news while sitting at a reading desk. " The angel holds a lily in his left hand, a symbol of Mary 's purity, his right hand is raised in greeting.
As expressed in Document A, from Theodore Rabb’s Basic Books, The Last Days of the Renaissance & The March to Modernity, “The clearest evidence of the break with medieval culture comes from the visual arts”. The Middle Ages had an emphasis on religious figures and symbolism. The two images contained Document A included: Madonna Enthroned Between two Angels by Duccio di Buonisegna from the late 13th century as well as Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, from the early 16th century; upon further observation the conclusion can be made that not only was the art from the Middle Ages focused mostly on religious subject, but it also had two-dimensional lifeless figures and drab colors, as expressed in the painting. This great contrast is clear because the Renaissance painting is the complete opposite, possessing realistic figures which were true to form and three dimensional, vibrant landscapes, with a focus on the individual. As Rabb put it, “the new artistic styles would echo broader movements and interests of the new age.”
The 1808 painting The Valpincon Bather by Ingres, is said to be “controversial”(oil painting techniques). At first glance, one may only see the back of a nude woman. If one looked closer there is a lot of different types of elements of composition. From the curtains, to the tassels it all plays a role.
There was a focus point which is Saint Francis. Although the painting mainly consist of black and tan colors, the slight bright colors to balance of the black. This help bring out the details, such as the blessing on hands and the kneeling of people. Yet, the details were not too big that it would be too much to handle. This helps get the message across to the audience, like myself.
Madonna and child are amongst the most popular yet controversial topics in the Christian art. Most of the pieces of art done on this topic usually have Mary and Jesus either surrounded by angels or saints who pay respect to them. It is an important figure in Catholicism as it reminds the believers about their faith. Both the two artworks were done during the Renaissance period with Madonna and child with the two angels being done around 1465 while Madonna and child with the saints being done around 1505.
The Sistine Chapel in Rome, Italy was first completed in 1481. Throughout the years, there have been multiple restorations of the ceiling to remove debris and clean the artwork. These restorations created much controversy on whether the cleaning was ethical and kept the artists initial intent. The restorations have kept the ceiling in tact and from fading in color and forms completely, however, it also changed the original beauty of Michelangelo’s work. There is not a single way to examine the legitimacy of these restorations, nor is there one correct opinion because every argument intertwines and influences the other.
Painting has got a story. It is made by Duke Lodovico Sforza’s reguest and according to Dan Brown this painting is telling something us. For example, the woman that left side of Jesus is st. Mary Magdalen. ’V’ sign symbolizes
Although Mary’s hand and body itself take up an odd amount of room they help objects such as baby Jesus stand in the painting as well. This painting has a certain movement it creates the gesture of a baby pulling his mother closer to him has he lays his cheek on his mother. The shape used is that of a circular motion. Dieric Bouts create a sense of harmony and wholeness using the same color, skin tone between Mary and Jesus create harmony. You can tell the contrast between the two people Mary symbolizes royalty being the mother of Jesus which, is why she wears blue.
Roger noted that, Michelangelo, together with Leonardo da Vinci, are the most-documented artist of the 16th century. Michelangelo created numerous breath-taking art works; however the Sistine Chapel in Rome art works in remains one of his most celebrated works. The work consisted of various paintings but the ‘Creation of Adam’ is particularly fascinating, it presented utterly realistic representation of human
It shows the usage of warm and cool colors. This is because the usage of red and blue color for the robes of Christ and John, his favorite disciple. Overall, when people see this artwork, they would immediately know that it is from the Renaissance period because of the characteristic. Besides that, I had also chosen one of the most famous painting during the Renaissance period which is the Monalisa also by Leonardo Da Vinci. The Monalisa was painted for the Lisa Antonio Maria Gherardini wife of Francesco del Giacondo who is a rich Florentine silk merchant.
The painting was made as though you were seeing the moon through the telescope and then the painter added the Virgin Mary and decorative religious ornamental figures. During the Baroque period we can see thanks to the advances of science in creating the printing press there was a new way for artists to produce works of art. This new art style was called etching. Etching was the act of making prints (Thompson, n.d.).
There was such an emotional appeal during this time because at the time there was a dispute between those that supported the Catholic Church and those that supported reforms (Protestants, those that wanted self-determination, etc.). As a result, the art made in this era was influenced by the dispute, as the Catholic Church supported artists to promote and glorify Catholicism, especially through Mannerism. In my opinion, the mastery of Michelangelo's body of work is evident in Michelangelo's Pieta through the manipulation of the folds and creases of the cloth. The varying depths, shapes, and sizes of the folds and creases utilize the lighting quite well as at first glance they looked very realistic at first glance, indicating his understanding
