Antebellum America was a period of conflict and unease due to the various differences in beliefs regarding slavery between the northern and southern states. Domestic ideology then was, the idea that women should be at home taking care of the children and serving as an emotional figure, while the men are out being corrupted and making the money. Many middle-class women were able to break into the public sphere and exercised this right to argue for white women’s rights, not only did they argue for white women rights, but they also argued for black slave women as well. Sarah Grimke remarks in her document, “There is another class of women in this country, to whom I cannot refer, without feelings of the deepest shame and sorrow. I allude to our female slaves.”. In her letters she argues against Catharine Beecher’s about the role of women and how they are subordinate to men. Her main arguments were against that women were not subordinate to men by gods rule. she says that god made them equal but then men created classes where they were higher ranked than women.
Abraham Lincoln, Frederic Douglass, were one of the most appealing well-known speakers, people who did believe that slavery was morally wrong and devote their lives to fight for freedom. However, there are several differences between the view of the Constitution’s position differences between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Kansas-Nebraska Act indicated that the recognition of slavery should be determined by the decision of these residents (popular or squatter sovereignty). This act itself conflicted heavily with the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, which was essentially seen as the admittance of slavery anywhere in the country. This act made a political issue of confrontation between North and South.
The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass challenges and enhances information from the textbook America a Narrative History. In Chapter 13 of the textbook, the Second Great Awakening is mentioned, and the author talks about how large camp meetings were held, which resulted in many converting to Methodism. Similarly, Douglass, as his master attended one, mentions a camp meeting, where Douglass hoped his master would become kinder or emancipate his slaves, however, instead it made his master crueler. In addition, in Chapter 15 the conflict between a true Christian and a Southern Christian is brought up. In both the narrative and the textbook, the fact that slavery is endorsed by the bible is brought up as part of the pro-slavery movement.

Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. The foundation of America is freedom. Freedom from Britain. However, the freedom is limited to white males who own property. When colonists started to immigrate to America, they wanted to escape from under the rule of Britain.
Although from different eras, both Douglass and Rowlandson use similar techniques such as religion, repetition, and sentimentalism to show that being held captive and slavery is wrong. America was founded on Christian beliefs, so Douglass attacked that. He states, “If the churches and ministers of our country were not stupidly blind, or most wickedly indifferent, they, too, would so regard it” (Douglass 1037) Douglass is making a bold move that will spark controversy. He uses statements like this to keep the audience’s attention.
Douglass believed that freedom for freed slaves was the ability to make decisions, regardless of the outcome, for one’s self. At the time, many white legislative members, both from the north and from the south, believed that laws needed to be made to regulate the former slave population. The North sought to save them from themselves, while the South attempted to control them back into a form of slavery through sharecropping and forced employment. Douglass instead insisted that the white populace should “Do nothing with us!” and that “[i]f the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are…disposed to fall, let them fall!”
Douglass’s position differ from those who supported slavery is that people who supported slavery, they thought it was a natural thing to do because on the Document “ Slavery a positive Good” on paragraph 1 it says, “ To maintain the existing relations between two races, inhabiting that section of the Union, is indispensable to the peace and happiness of both…. But let me not be understood as admitting, even by implication, that the existing relations between two races in the slaveholding states is an evil: - far otherwise; I hold to be good, as it has thus far proved itself both, and will continue to prove so if not disturbed by the fell spirit of abolition.” What this piece of evidence is saying is that slavery is a good thing and not a bad thing and that abolition should stop. Another way that Frederick Douglass’s position is different from people that support is that people who support slavery is that the people who support slavery has a different perspective of what is right and what is wrong because on the Document “ Slavery a Positive Good” paragraph 2 it says,” I hold in the present state of civilization, where two races of different origin, and distinguished by color, and other physical differences, as well as intellectual, are brought together, the relation now existing in the slaveholding States between the two is, instead of an evil, a good- a positive good… I hold then, that

Grimke went as far as acknowledging the fact that she was a “repentant slaveholder” and successfully established a position of familiarity with the body of men she spoke before. However, the fight to eliminate the oppression of one group cannot be effective unless we are consistent in promoting the rights of everyone. Grimke took the opportunity to present herself as a “moral being” (not a woman, not man, not a slave). She did so, but also continued to acknowledge the current state of intersection by calling out the multiple forms of discrimination in the oppression against both women and slaves. Once she addressed this injustice, she appealed to the legislature to view all people as precious and with inalienable rights.
