The Civil War is a very brutal war in American History. One nation fought and killed its own people, and over half a million lives were destroyed and even more families were torn apart. The nation was divided because of slavery. In the North, people wanted to abolish slavery and make free states. In the South, people wanted to keep slavery because it was profitable to their economy and generated a 100% profit on all goods sold. In the North, blacks and whites were starting to work together. Blacks were still restricted and did not have the same rights as a white man but slavery was not accepted. Blacks could not go where ever they pleased, blacks could not apply for any job and blacks could not vote. The North began to build manufactures …show more content…
Due to the Missouri Compromise, new states in the North were automatically free states. The Northerns started to hate slavery and wanted to push other states to become free states. The South could not let this happen because their economy depending on slavery. Since the slave masters did not have to pay their workers, everything they sold was 100% profit to the South. If slavery was abolished, they’d have to find other ways to farm their plantations and would undoubtedly make less money. With American manufactures rising, the government decided to impose a tariff or tax on all imported and exported goods. The excess tax would decrease the import of foreign goods and increase business for the American manufactures in the North. This forced the South to either pay more for their goods, get the goods from the North or manufacture their goods themselves. Slavery was holding the Southern economy together. The South needed slavery and every day more and more Americans opposed it. For the South, the only way to maintain slavery was to defeat the North in war. If the South won the Civil War, slavery would not be abolished and their economy would be
The Civil War was America’s most devastating conflict in terms of casualties and property destroyed. The war started after the southern states seceded from the Union and southern troops fired on a Union fort in Charleston harbor. Prior to the war there had been lots of tension between the northern and the southern states over the issue of slavery. The dissolution of the United States prior to the Civil War was the result of southern opposition to growing anti-slavery sentiments in the north, dissatisfaction with political compromises especially those relating to slavery in western states, and general concerns about the future of a post slavery southern economy.
The increase in economic power scared the south because this meant more power was being transferred to the new states. The added states were causing many imbalances in the government. As the new states declared whether or not they were a slave state, slave related laws become either easier or harder to pass. The economic power struggles were just the start of the problems
Slavery, as many people know, was the cause of an ongoing dispute during the early-mid 1800s that caused several things like states seceding, rebellions, and even the Civil War. Slavery had a huge effect on politics and several debates, decisions, acts, and compromises had to be formed in order to keep the people in check. In the North and West, most people were anti-slavery while most people in the South were pro-slavery. These two regions were way more different than they were similar not only in the issue of slavery, but also in their economies which helped further the sectional disputes. Slavery and the impacts it had greatly shaped our country and made people choose between slavery with all of the money it offered, and freeing the
Before the Emancipation Proclamation the main focus of the Civil War in the North was that they believed that they had to fight to preserve the Union. At the beginning of the war, abolishing slavery was not a main goal of the North. Southerners believed that they had the right to leave the Union (secede). Southerners wanted independence so that they could keep their traditional way of life, including the having and keeping of slavery. With the issuance of the new Emancipation Proclamation freedom for slaves now became the new goal for the north, while the South wanted to defend
This caused them to secede and fight for the freedoms of the Confederacy, which was slavery. By the end of the war the South cared more for protecting and keeping the Confederacy more than they cared for protecting
The South was dependent on its slaves because they were the main reason for the South’s success. This created significant problems between the two parties and pushed them to go to war over their own beliefs. Abraham Lincoln declared
The Civil War contained massive amounts of deaths and murders. Involving Abe’s assassination, treason, the escape of slaves, and bloody battles. Two regions had war for a reason. The North didn’t want a single race to work for another, the North wanted slavery gone, but the South didn’t. The Civil is a war between two territories or more, the North and South in this case, were the two territories to fight for one goal.
The North had already vanished slavery, but it was still present in the south. This is how slavery lead to the war. The concepts of the Constitution the union were based on the principles of freedom and liberty that all mean were created equal. The American revolutionaries had fought for independence, they had forgotten to think about the slaves in the south. While the American were cheering about their independence it sent a cruel message to the slaves.
Slavery became a key issue in the arguments of the north and the south. The south was very agricultural while the north was industrial. The south feared the declaration of freedom for the slaves by government leaders in the north. Government officials at the time were not interested in ending Slavery in the slave states, but instead in keeping newly admitted states from becoming slave states. The first official disagreement of this came in 1820.
To us, the Northerners, the Civil War was a great event that banned slavery in the South. Slavery was wrong in every way in the United States because everyone was made equally and shall be treated equally. On the Constitution, it states that “all men are created equal”, the word “men” should include all white men and all black men. Freed slaves should not be captured again and used them for labor work. Freed slaves should have freedom everywhere throughout America.
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
The northern states abolished slavery after we won the war. Slaves also began to fight against slavery, they wrote petitions and made good arguments. People were beginning to open their eyes and question slavery. Well, not speaking for the southern states, but it was a start and did free many.
After the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860, eleven Southern states seceded from the Union. People in the South made a living through a plantation economy, Southerners needed cash crops that were labor intensive, using slaves to work this economy. The Northern economy was very different than the Southern economy the Northern economy was an industrialized economy, unlike the Southern economy. Abolitionists wanted slavery to end and thought it was an immoral and incorrect way to treat other human beings. Many Southerners supported the secession of South Carolina, and many other states, from the Union because they would rather leave the Union now than be killed by the people who hated them and the people they owned.
The American Civil War, from 1861-1865, manifested one of the most everlasting changes in American history. Drastically changing the country economically and politically leading to the virtual reconstruction of a growing nation, which lead us to the nation, we know today as the United States of America. From the Southern point of view, this war was a War of Rebellion/ Independence from the Northern point of view this war was seen as a revolution. This unfortunate war started as a result of many years of differences between the Union and the Confederacy. It erupted after many years of conflict about economic, social, and political problems building up between the two regions.
Slave owning and slavery in general had a lasting impression on the way the South functions. The validity of the statement completely falls through; the statement makes a false argument on how slavery affected the United States. Slavery in the Antebellum South led to not only an extremely successful growth in economics, but also enhanced the social diversity and community developments between whites and blacks. The economic structure in the Antebellum South, truly improved with the influx of slavery.
