Sleeping Beauty
Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person has difficulty breathing while sleeping that is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain that triggers a waking response. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep as many as 500 times during the course of a night, although they are not aware that they have been wakened. (Feldman, R. (2016).) If left untreated, sleep apnea can result in a growing number of health problems; hypertension, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, depression and headaches. It can also lead to poor performance in everyday activities such as at work and school. At least 20 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. (Blahd, W., (Ed.). 2016, September 6.)
