Ibsen’s play A Doll 's House, written in 1879, examines the importance of social class and the expectations that follow. A Doll’s House tells the story of married couple, Torvald and Nora Helmer who strive to fulfill social expectation. However, the ending is known to be a shock for some, as roles reverse and Nora comes to realize that she has been mistreated like a doll throughout the whole marriage. Throughout A Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen, doll 's and the dolls house are symbolic of how Nora is a submissive wife controlled and dominated by Torvald, and both are repressed by societal standards.

Torvald perpetuates aids to Nora’s doll-like personality, by calling her pet-names: “Come, come, my little skylark must not droop her wings” (Ibsen 5). Nora follows Torvald around in a submissive manner. Calling her “little skylark” and “little squirrel,” Torvald degrades her as both a woman and a human. The word “little” is also frequently used before the pet names to illustrate how Torvald does not see Nora as equal; rather, Nora is his property or possession, similarly to how a child looks after his or hers doll. Not only does Torvald call her pet names, but he also controls what she eats. Nora eats one or two macaroons before she hears Torvald in the other room and hastily puts them away. The stage directions states, “[Nora] puts the bag of macaroons into her pocket and wipes her mouth” (Ibsen 4). Nora is depicted as secretive as she hides the macaroons, demonstrating Torvalds superiority as he tells her what she can and can not do. Torvald explains, “Hasn’t Miss Sweet Tooth been breaking rules in town today?” Nora replies, “No; what makes you think that?” (Ibsen 7). Torvald and Nora’s relationship and home can be compared to as a “doll house” because of its perfect characteristics, however it is quite the opposite, with its foundation based on lies and pretend happiness. The stage directions read “A room furnished comfortably and tastefully, but not extravagantly. At the back, a door to the right leads to the entrance-hall, another to the left leads to Helmer’s study. Near the window is a round table, arm-chairs and a small sofa. Engravings on the walls; a cabinet with china and other small objects; a small bookcase with well-bound books” (Ibsen 4). Similar to a dolls house, everything is neatly placed and rooms are divided into separate areas. Although, the house seems to be a perfect one, Nora and Torvald put on facades and appear as everything is normal between them. In fact, Nora continues to lie to Torvald for example, her forgery. Mrs Linde tries to get Krogstad to not reveal the letter to Helmer. Mrs Linde states: “Helmer must know all about it. This unhappy secret must be disclosed; they must have a couple understanding between them, which is impossible with all this concealment and falsehood going on,” (Ibsen 52). Mrs. Linde is well aware of Nora’s secret and the consequences that would follow if Torvald found out. Not only is it taxing to hide the debt from Torvald, but also to pretend to be a flighty, careless doll for his amusement. Throughout the drama, Nora’s difficulty only grows. This brings in to question whether or not it is acceptable for a woman to simply walk away from a marriage, involving three children, and not attempt to work things out. Nora realizes she and the life she has been living has been a complete construct of the way society expects her to be. Nora is Torvald’s doll and her life has not amounted to anything more than making sure he and the world around her is happy. The result of the inequalities she is faced with results in Nora being completely unhappy. Torvald fails to recognize everything that Nora does to ensure his happiness.
During act III, Nora asked to speak to Torvald after her performance of the tarantella dance. The following conversation demonstrated her quest for autonomy and freedom, as well as Torvald’s inadequate responses to her arguments and demands; it also showed how deeply connected her unhappy situation is with society’s regulation of the relationship between the sexes. She asserts that she is “...first and foremost a human being”, and her strong conviction that her womanhood, and the expectations associated with it, are secondary, strengthens her resolve to make a radical choice: A break with both husband and, with necessity due to her legal position, her children (Ibsen, 184). Nora’s various characteristics are revealed through the use of other characters in the play A Doll’s House, as when Nora speaks to the different characters, she acts differently and reveals what is not shown otherwise. This is because characters such as Helmer treat Nora as if she is a child, which gives the impression that they are not in a “normal” marriage. Their relationship is more like a father-daughter relationship. Krogstad reveals that Nora is not as immature as she looks to Helmer. Nora’s conversations with Dr Rank uncover that she can have a rather flirtatious nature, furthermore, is presented as someone with a rather sexual persona.
Nora Helmer is Torvald’s beautiful young happy wife, who loves to spend money, dress in elegant clothing, and is a mother of three. However Nora is also dishonest to her own husband. Initially, Nora appears to be a dependent, naïve girl, yet as the play unfolds, we see her as strong, independent woman, willing to make sacrifices for those who she cares about as well as herself. Henrik Ibsen uses symbolism in order to portray Nora’s sovereignty from the strict social guidelines of morality and appearances in 19th century Norway. The Helmer household is portrayed as the ideal and typical family in 19th century Norway. The Helmer’s home represents the standard middle class home, which is described in the stage directions as a “comfortable and tastefully, but not expensively furnished home.”
