Class Distinction: The differentiation of one social class from another; a point of differentiation between social classes, as a characteristic attitude, behavior, etc. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm , Orwell gives us greedy and manipulative pigs that represent government officials throughout time. As always the hard working animals put a fair amount of trust in the pigs to lead them; and this is because of their gullibility and lack of intelligence. The pigs use this to instate a hierarchy that leaves them at the top. Class distinction is the most effective mode of persuasion because when the pigs believe their authority is being questioned, the pigs reinstate the hierarchy by convincing the working animals that their job is immensely harder. …show more content…
Despite Snowball’s best attempts to teach the other animals to read, there is an obvious difference; therefore, allows the pigs to take advantage of the lack of education of all the animals. You begin to see this is when the windfall apples are taken for the use of pigs. Squealer persuades that the apples “, contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig.” (17) The pigs use the scapegoat of tiring brainwork, and using the “milk and apples” out of the spirit of selflessness when truly this is the opposite of what is actually going on. Likewise, when one of the seven commandments change to, “ All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (63) we can see that the pigs begin making the divide between the two classes even larger than before. The pigs are showing that they matter more and must remain at the forefront of the farm, and this change to the seven commandments show that the pigs feel insecure in their position and feel the need to rectify this with the other animals. Not to mention, when Mr. Pilkington says, “ ‘If you have your lower animals to contend with,’ he said, ‘we have our lower classes!’ ,” (65) this fortifies that the pigs have separated themselves so much from the working animals that even human leaders begin to notice the differences. The pigs wholly consolidate the power by limiting the other animals education and intelligence to see how power mad the pigs have become. The lack of education and lack of intelligence assist the pigs in their path to taking over the
The pigs are even able to make murder seem necessary by simply changing the commandments. When Muriel reads the commandments, “It ran: ‘No animal shall kill any other animal without cause. Somehow or other the last two words slipped out of the animals’ memory”
The pigs change the commandments in order to cause a confusion within the animals. Confusion makes the animals dependent on the pigs namely Napoleon, who is kept in power by the animals and their confusion. In the book Animal Farm threats, executions, and the changing of commandments are all tactics that are used to stimulate fear into the minds of the animals. These strategies are all ways that the pigs insure that all the other animals will stay oppressed, and them in power.
For example, the pigs thought they were more important or inferior to the other animals. At the beginning of the book, the pigs were decided to be the leaders because of their intelligence and their ability to read and write. The pigs wrote seven commandments on the top of the barn and one of them was “All Animals are Equal” page 24. This is important because the seven commandments end up being broken by the leader of the pigs Napoleon. At first,
The satire present here is that the altering of the ten commandments effectively portray how the absurd the concept is. There is no way that animals could become, “more equal” than others. In the beginning of the novel, Old Major expressed that the animals shall overcome their oppressors, but the pigs become the oppressors. Through their chants and the ten commandments, the citizens are brainwashed to believe that everything is just and fair because when the commandments and chants were first written or said, everyone was in agreement, and believed it was fair. The pigs start to alter the propaganda, and the animals still believe that it is fair, when in reality it is not.
They placed themselves at the top of the hierarchy because they knew the animals would blindly follow their reasoning (science, as Squealer said) and used this to their advantage to get better conditions, in this case, food, for themselves. Another example is when the pigs gave their excuse for not doing any work on the farm- claiming they had their own responsibilities that the other animals were not smart enough to understand. The text says, "There was, as Squealer was never tired of explaining, endless work in the supervision and organization of the farm. Much of this work was of a kind that the other animals were too ignorant
Fill your glasses to the brim. Gentlemen, here is my toast: To the prosperity of The Manor Farm! " (10.32),The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others. With their superior knowledge it was natural that they should assume the leadership.
This relates to the theme because, throughout the story, the pigs have been in charge because they have more knowledge than the other animals. They were also really clever and could think of a way around every difficulty the farm experienced. ( Orwell 13) In the middle of the story, some crucial rules were being changed and the animals did not do anything about it. “ … pigs not only took their meals in the kitchen and used the drawing-room as a recreation room, but also slept in the beds.”
In Animal Farm, we see the sinister theme of abuse of power and corruption displayed throughout the story. The epitome on how the pigs abused the power was how they manipulated the 7 commandments to their own benefit. The 7 commandments were inscribed on the wall and they would form “an unalterable law by which all animals on Animal Farm must live for ever after”. Ironically, the 7 commandments were changed one by one to suit the benefit of the pigs. For example, when the pigs discovered a case of whiskey and got drunk, they got attracted to the taste of alcohol.
LITERATURE REVIEW: Keyword: political satire According to the en.oxforddictionaries.com satire means “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues” and a satirical fiction is “a literary work in which human foolishness or vice is attacked through irony, derision or wit.” Samantha Sen (2015) conducted the research on ‘All propaganda is dangerous but some are more dangerous than others: George Orwell and the use of literature as propaganda’ in which it is stated that Animal Farm novel is known as a fairy tale, but it is basically a criticism on Soviet Union, and Joseph Stalin. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels express their major critiques and opinions on capitalism in their 1848 publication of The Communist Manifesto. Their critiques are based around the idea that capitalism is simply unfair, meaning that one class benefits significantly more than the rest. The class that benefits least from capitalism is the proletariats. This unintelligent labor class suffers from the capitalists dominance, and is unaware of the damage they are experiencing. George Orwell’s depiction of Boxer in his novel, Animal Farm, fits precisely into Marx and Engels’ negative critique of capitalism by representing a strong symbol for the proletariat class and succumbing to the powerful demands of the capitalists.
Animal Farm, A Dystopian Society Dystopian societies involve bloodshed, espionage, and countless tragedies among the citizens of the society. The goal of creating a successful society is very difficult to accomplish due to the amount of criteria a society must meet to become successful. A utopia is a society where everything is perfect and everyone is happy, while a dystopia is a society where everyone is under complete control and the government is often conniving. Animal farm can be portrayed as a dystopian society due to the farm’s cunning, but evil, leader and the multiple traits of dystopian societies that can be clearly seen on the farm. The propaganda used by Squealer in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, as well as the frowned upon dissent and false fantasy of the farm being a utopia, prove that The Animal Farm is a dystopian society.
AMAZING TOPIC SENTENCE. Squealer is the propaganda machine on the farm, he portrays everything that benefits the pigs, including himself, as something to benefit all of the animals on the farm. Following Napoleon exiling Snowball from the farm, Squealer convinces the animals, “On the contrary, it was he who had advocated it in the beginning, and the plan which Snowball had drawn on the floor of the incubator shed had actually been stolen from among Napoleon 's papers. The windmill was, in fact, Napoleon 's own creation” (Orwell 57). Propaganda is biased information used to convince
Published in 1945, Animal Farm is a satirical dystopian novella written by English author George Orwell, and is perhaps his best known work. An allegorical tale, Animal Farm tells a literal story - of the animals on the farm - that is intended to be representative of another situation - Stalin 's rise in the Soviet Union. Animal Farm opens on Manor Farm, where animals are subservient to their human master, a farmer named Jones. One night an aged boar called Old Manor calls a meeting of his fellow animals, and puts forth the call that they should one day rise up in rebellion against the humans who enslave them. Old Manor suggests that once humans have been overthrown, no animal should act like a human by sleeping in a bed, wearing clothes, drinking alcohol, or engaging in trade.
