Social class played a key role in the Elizabethan Age; without social hierarchy society would have fallen apart, the people did not know of anything else other than the role of classes. Each class had different situations of life, some were wealthy and had nice homes while others were poor and living off of the streets. The class rankings were given to each individual by situations such as birth, fame, wealth, and known skills(“Elizabethan Era.”). One could only move up a class by the Queen's approval, obtaining sudden wealth, going into debt, losing your job, and many other specific conditions(“Elizabethan Era - The Lost Colony.”). For instance, marriage between two people from separate classes could alter social class and was often frowned upon. In the Elizabethan age, social class structure was paramount. The class ranking dictated how the people of each level could dress, the diet and food available, and career standing.
Social hierarchy classes consisted of a monarch, nobility, gentry, merchants, yeomanry, and laborer. This was the base of almost all meals for the lower class and the meals were very bland and tasteless. Nobility allowed unqualified people to obtain positions that should not have been available to them. The nobility did provide a sort of moral boost for everyone though because they were looked up to by most because they were supposed to be the best of the best. The want for more land played a big role between the English and the British colonies. With the arrival of the English to the Native Americans, the English main focus was to displace the Native Americans and take over their land. With an unstable economy, left it easy for English to take over the land, leaving it hard for Native Americans. Many new challenges for the Native Americans soon followed the arrival of the English.
The way the people in Elizabethan Era ate in the years of 1550-1600. The kinds of food eaten depended very much on wealth and status. Poor people, in general, had humble and unvaried diets, whereas the rich of Elizabethan England ate well. The upper class people of the Elizabethan Era ate many spicy and sweet foods consisting of expensive spices and ingredients. Poor people could not afford much red meat, like beef or pork, so tended to eat white meat, like chicken, rabbit or hare, and birds they could catch like blackbirds or pigeons.
These areas consisted of power and how to prepare for it, social clubs, the debutante season, and marriages. Although three of these only contain minor differences from other social classes, the upper class benefits greatly from them. These differences can be anywhere from how extravagant a wedding and its reception are, to having a special ceremony for transitioning into adulthood, or owning a membership to a prestigious country club, simply by having a high income and being a part of the upper class. They may be minor at first glance, but these can shape relationships with political figures and high-ranking business professionals.
