“The Sociological Imagination”, written C. Wright Mills, illustrates the importance of individuals having an understanding of their relationship to society (2000). The perspective, created by the author, allows people to grasp the interconnection of their position in society to the institutions and history which have allowed for that position to exist. To understand one’s self through the sociological imagination method gives individuals the ability to see how their personal troubles are consequences of larger public issues; thus their personal troubles cannot solely be solved by their perseverance. Through their proposed method, called intersectionality, the authors discourage readers from ever separating race, class, or gender when considering the effects of a singular one. Further, to examine who is silenced and who is privileged and how this affects what information is available, intersectionality encourages consideration of the sources of knowledge. Rather than comparing the experiences of individuals with different identities, this framework looks at how, for example, the oppression of women cannot solely be studied by studying one group of schoolgirls with otherwise similar social standing (eg. I personally think that not only women face intersectionality but men do as well. Individuals within society are influenced by the socio-economic factors of the society which they inhabit. This essay will discuss Sociological imagination which was first mentioned by author C.W. The personal problem that will be discussed is childhood trauma, because it is broad this essay will focus more on depression and how it effects society on a larger scale. Without applying intersectionality in analysis, oppression can only be understood in general terms, which can cause forms of oppression to become undetected (Mattsson, 2014). Instead, intersectionality, demonstrates the complexity of gender, sexuality, class, and race avoiding stereotypes as a whole, rather than simplifying an individual based on one characteristic (Mattsson, 2014). For example, when I was working at a Community Centre in the Jane and Finch area, I had a conversation with my co-worker. He described the barriers and struggles he has faced because of his race and socioeconomic status. It was through this conversation that I realized the pre-conceived notions my co-worker had about me, as a white individual who did not grow-up in the same neighbourhood.
The Sociological Imagination Sociological imagination is a "quality of mind" that allows one to grasp "history and biography and the relations between the two within society.” (Elwell). Sociological imagination is understanding your situation while taking into consideration the broader society. It allows us to see our own society-, and the people within it- from an alternative perspective that of our own personal experiences and cultural biases. In Mills’ publication, he describes the sociological imagination as “a quality of mind that will help them [humans] to use information and to develop reason in order to achieve lucid summations of what is going on in the world and of what may be happening within themselves”. (Mills, 2000, p. 5). Giddens, in his publication ‘Sociology: A brief but critical introduction’, concurs with Mills’ definition of the sociological imagination, and further states that three particular views are essential to understanding the social world: “an historical, an anthropological, and a critical sensitivity.” (Giddens, 1986, p. 13). To have sociological imagination is to have “vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society" (Mills 2). Overall, sociological imagination is the concept which is based on social locators. As mentioned previously, there is a difficulty to grasp control on class, gender, and race because a person is born into these three categories. In a practical sense, my personal choices are shaped by my social locators. Sociological imagination currently plays a role in my presence at Sacred Heart University.

Coined by feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectional feminism refers to the different ways in which race and gender interact to shape the many intersections of Black women’s experiences (Crenshaw, 1991, p. 1244). Since its conception, intersectional feminist thought has grown to not only include the experiences of Black women, but to also examine how gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status (SES), and ability all interact to determine an individual’s privilege or lack thereof (LaMantia, Wagner, and Bohecker, 2015). Within a classroom setting, recognizing the complexities of intersectionality is vital to understanding the needs and experiences of each student. According to LaMantia, Wagner, and Bohecker (2015), “intersectionality is an awareness of difference, oppression, and the consequences of these interactions in terms of power,” (p.) and as such, intersectionality can provide a voice to individuals who are subject to multiple forms of oppression and marginalization within society. Therefore, a classroom that takes an intersectional feminist pedagogical approach is able to empower all students, regardless of identity, to meet their full potential.
