Next, the author gets to the position of which the “NCAA was responding to a report issued by the U.S. commission on Civil Rights” which labeled the usage of American Indian tribes as mascots as racist and disrespectful to their communities (Willy, 2005). This important information was misplaced and should have been put before the list of colleges affected by the NCAA’s decision to yield a better understanding.

When people talk about mascots being named after Indian cultures they think that the Indians being recognized should feel honored. However, when that team plays their rival the other fans are taught to hate those people causing them to hear hateful and degrading comments throughout their lives. “If it’s the team’s tradition, then it’s a legacy of bigotry.” (Wulf). People don’t show respect for Native Americans they use them to create a profit.

Native American Mascot Controversy In a recent study conducted by the sociology professor at California State University, James Fenelon, it was found that out of 786 Native Americans 67% agreed that the term ‘Redskins’, used in sports team’s names, is offensive. Redskin’s and any other Native American term, slang or imagery is offensive and should not be used because these things are sacred to Native American culture, and most of the mascots and the terms used are stereotypical, degrading, and dehumanizing. Many of the mascots used today and in the past related to Native American culture, and though the name may not be meant for the intent to harm or disrespect, they still do cause this.

The Washington D.C football team has started a controversy with many people that are from the American Indian background. The “indian” sports mascot, logos, or symbols show an image of the Native American people that is not true. To some this may concerning, but to others this is no big deal. I think that this is something that people and teams should care or think about.

Do ethnically related mascots truly need to be changed in the world of sports? Most would respond with a resounding “Yes,” arguing that names such as “Redskins” and “Chiefs” are derogatory, and need to be removed. On the other hand, others argue that these mascots show pride and dignity towards America’s past history. The debate on whether or not it is appropriate to name sports teams after native and foreign groups of people, has become a tremendous debate, but the side with a more cogent argument, is the side that supports the keeping of particular mascots.

“Schools use these as ways to honor them for being brave and to look at them as a leader,” (“Native American mascot controversy”). This is a good idea, but students don’t think any students think this is the reason for the name. If the school really had this idea in mind they would do more to dignify it. But from what I’ve experienced it is that schools don’t really honor other teams' mascots. They have posters and chants going against the opponents mascot in a disrespectful way.

Many sports teams, primarily in North America, adopted the names, symbols, and characters as a part of the brand's identity. Although, the practice has been chastised by many Native American advocacy groups and tribes, especially arguing that it refers to rude and harmful stereotypes which reduce a diverse culture into nothing more than a drawing.

Over the past few years, the controversy over sports names or mascots has increasingly become an uproar. The main sports teams being targeted due to controversial mascots are programs having names that deal with Native Americans. Well known programs, such as, the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and the Washington Redskins are just a few of the many teams being targeted due to controversial team names and/or mascots. Currently, the Redskins are receiving the most heat from racial groups. However, professional sport teams are not the only teams receiving negative remarks; there are well known colleges that are also receiving huge blows for racial symbols.

I noticed the tremendous amount of discussion being faced about the controversy of the Cleveland Indians mascot, Chief Wahoo. Is this entire thing a racial slur or just a way to honor our Native Americans? Even though some might think that it is an honor to the Native Americans that Chief Wahoo is the mascot, but there is a whole other side of the argument. I believe the Cleveland Indians should ban their mascot.

Sports are something most Americans can relate to; many of us played some type of sport as a kid and some of us are die-hard fans. Sports have developed with us as a society and have become an interwoven piece of our culture and their effects can be seen in many cities countrywide. The facilities where these teams play can become a centerpiece of the local community and the teams themselves can bring people from all walks of life together in search of one mutual goal, for their team to win.
