Many school systems have now begun to offer rewards to students who do well on test, writing papers, etc. The sole purpose of this method is to motivate kids to work harder in school on their exams and assignments. Although, this method seems to be a positive idea, it has become a controversial topic. While many think this idea encourages students to take the test more seriously, many others believe that the policy is unfair to students who struggle academically. In order to succeed in our world, everyone needs to be pushed, motivate, and have a goal set to strive for, if not, how would we move forward? While many adults are motivated in their lives and push themselves to work harder to be successful in a task, job, or goal, children seem to not have that drive yet. They don’t fully understand the end goal or the reasons for pushing themselves just yet. Children and teens need more of a push than just their own self-drive, therefore schools systems have tried coming up with ideas to motivate their students into wanting to place better on tests. As typical as it is, we are all as humans, completely different, no one is the same. With that being said, not all students learn and comprehend the same way. Therefore, those students who struggle to place well on tests have to understand that they might have to work a little harder and longer in order to place as well, or even better than those who don't have to take as much time to study for standardize tests. There are many reasons for why kids receiving a participation trophy is a bad thing. If you try hard in math, but you fail a test would your teacher just give you an A because you tried your best? The answer to that is no, you will then have to work to improve your grade. So why give them a trophy for trying when it’s not going to do anything for them.
The kids need to know that not everything in life is fair and losing is a big part. For instance the HBO finishing in the last place is good for the kids. Students are fully aware of the positive and negative consequences of grade inflation whether it is something as simple as a grade curve or as drastic as a student trying to bargain their way into graduation. However, another smaller issue that arises is the “participation trophy.” When doing something, everyone gets an equal amount of victory. When discussing this topic in class, I realized that many of my peers saw participation trophies and inflated grades as one in the same. Both items apparently trigger narcissism and false hope in children.
In today’s society, more and more kids are getting participation trophies for doing nothing except showing up. Yes it is important to teach kids to do their best, but being awarded just for being as good as you already are doesn't give kids the motivation to make themselves even better. Why would they want to improve if they already have that shiny trophy? I do not believe that participation trophies should be handed out like they are.
Recently I’ve read an article that tells about these schools where kids get paid with they score well on AP classes. This made me wonder why these people need an incentive to do well in school. Going to school is a privilege that most people don’t get the chance to have the education that these people take for granted. As a student in high school did you ever feel like the standardized test are helping you or making you get in to a better college? Have you ever thought about how many hours students and teachers spend preparing for the standardized test? Many hours and studying are being put into those test but are they really effective and are the test doing the students good in life? Standardized tests are really just to effective, teachers and students spend too much time on them and it’s not doing the students any good, and even it’s not doing the teachers any good. The same grades can mean different levels of effort for different people. Offering a student money for good grades can take away the importance of working without a reward, in general. Learning should be done all your life, not just when you’re paid for it. Grades don’t show effort equally.

In a school, there are many grades, boys and girls, faculty, admissions, and many more positions that are needed in order for a school to run smoothly. Within each section, there can be many different categorizations like how the lower schoolers play all day with learning the basics, the middle schoolers learn slightly more but still want to play all day, and then the high schoolers who are slammed with work day in and day out. Within those high school students there are the nerds, the sport players, the creative ones, and challenged ones. While many students are not limited to one category, their type of classes and work ethics have a correlation with their grades. Students can either try their hardest in order to get into a good college where they have to work even more, the students can do what they can to pass the class, or the students skip school and never do their homework because they already plan to drop out of college.
Some of the reasons include children should wanting to get successful rather than the money at the end or paying students is leading to practical problems. Another reason is that when the reward isn’t offered anymore, will schools need to raise the stakes to keep students engaged in school? Rewarding students for satisfying grades is an atrocious idea because the student’s internal drive to succeed should drive the students to perform well in school. It also is an unpleasant idea because the school will become a business transaction, and plentiful issues can occur in the school.
