Opt Out is a movement that is addressing the option of not having a child participate in standardized testing. This is part of the No Child Left Behind program and addresses the way standardized testing distorts and corrupts K-12 classrooms perception. A growing numbers of parents, teachers and students are questioning the value of federal, state and district testing. Opt Out is stating that standardized testing results have shown that it is not having a positive effect on preparing students for college. Several additional factors impact the results, such as the specific search engine, we utilized Google,Internet Explorer, Bing, and Yahoo. Other sites that can have varied responses depend whether they are from libraries, public or higher learning institutions, non-profit organizations, and corporations with interests. There are things to consider when selecting your research method and the collection of the data. The library that was used to collect data on Opt Out was the McHenry Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz. This library is located at a research university which allows an individual to search a wide selection of media. There are other libraries that differ such city or county public library that are under a government entity with a restrained budget. For this subject we utilized the McHenry Library in particular the LexisNexis Academic research link. Once on the LexisNexis site, there are numerous buttons that give a researcher different options to begin with such as Hot Topic Links - Today’s Front Page News or you can simply type in the word search box. Again, this word search selection will have an impact on the material that will result in but in doing so the results list was varied with no one entity outshining another. This particular results list appeared impartial in contrast to that of the Google or Internet Explorer search engines. There were numerous articles that covered a wide spectrum of authors and regions. In addition to that,the Federal law policy of implementing penalties on districts that fall short of 95% students taking standardized tests may prove worse for that particular district as far as education aids are considered. If students are given choice to opt-out,then the wealthier and middle class may opt-out and reduce the funding available for students who are still interested in taking tests. So,the issue must be addressed accordingly leaving everyone happy rather than some part of people happy. So as to conclude,the policy makers or political leaders should consider this issue in a holistic approach and should not give the flexibility for students to opt-out of annual tests as it retains the conventional education standards of the country which in turn may help build a fairly considered society.

With over one million signatures and comments from parents against the program, there has been little progress with the disputes they have made. Some claim that education should be left entirely out of the hands of the government, with little to no interference in how classrooms are run or taught. The belief that the education of a child is best left in the hands of those closest are the best to make the decisions, rather than federal acts. As adults who are responsible for making sure we are put on the right path to succeed, it can be a very daunting task. According to New Haven Independent, “21.0 percent of kids in the Class of 2012 dropped out” (Bailey, Melissa) of our high school. With the intense efforts of making students go to college immediately after graduation, it is very evident that schools are pushed from above (aka the school system) to justify their existence and are forced to compete with graduation rates. These pressures are not about the students but simply just politics, or a way of redemption for New Haven Public Schools. However, the burden of requiring us to make a decision is still unreasonable.

1. Standardized tests are a reliable and objective way to measure student achievement. Multiple choice tests like the ACT and SAT are graded by machines and not subject to bias or subjectivity. Having to rely on scores from teachers is not as reliable as the teachers have a vested interest in producing favorable results. 1.
Since 2006, overall SAT scores have dropped by 21 points. It is safe to say that the increase in standardized testing has done more bad than good. When standardized testing became more prominent, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) saw a plateau in reading and math scores. Additionally, the NAEP saw no further closure in the test score gap. The test score gap affects all minorities.
The state of Texas has been in a constant struggle within itself over just how to evaluate education, and standardized testing in Texas has been a major influencer in terms of the state’s standards for over thirty years. Though these methods of testing have been utilized for decades, resentment to the tests have been continuously rising among educators, parents, and students, but not everyone agrees. Despite government officials trying to quell these protests with changes to administration, and the way the test itself is formatted and formulated, there seems to have been little to no improvement made and those opposing the tests have started calling for an end to all standardized testing. For one to truly understand this ongoing struggle, one must first look at standardized testing’s beginning, then how government today is trying to fix the broken system, and finally consider the opinions of notable figures in the testing world.
Dropping testing would “result in higher levels of academic achievement in entering classes at public schools” (Jaschik). A Wake Forest Study showed that “79% of the 2012 incoming class was in the top 10% in high school, before test optional it was in the low 60s%” (Balf). Students who have worked hard in high school should be rewarded for their diligence instead rewarding intelligent students who do not demonstrate the proper effort. When colleges accept students with better grades instead of those with better tests scores, they are more likely to get determined students who will excel in college. At public schools, a 30% increase of minorities and low income applicants was seen when schools become test optional (Jaschik).

To Test or To Read It would be nice to imagine that everyone begins at the start line together. Unfortunately, a majority of people start at a disadvantage. In most public elementary schools, there are students in every grade level that are reading behind grade level. Consequently, these same students will encounter tests throughout their whole academic career. Starting in elementary school, a literacy gap will begin to emerge among students.
Keeping track of the information found is also important so the you can go back at a later date to retrieve and review; it also assists in avoiding duplication of articles. Keeping good records allows the researcher to be more efficient. 3. The money used for the tests could go towards sports, clubs, the quality of the education that the students are receiving, and even the school itself. Some schools in states other than Ohio got the memo and decided opt every student in the school out of standardized testing, which brought many benefits to the school and its students. Introduction Standardized tests may be used for a wide variety of educational purposes. For example, they may be used to determine a young child’s readiness for kindergarten, identify students who need special-education services or specialized academic support, place students in different academic programs or course levels, or award diplomas and other educational certificates. Thesis Statement Standardized tests should not be eliminated completely, but should rather be evaluated in addition to other factors such as grades, extracurricular activities, and volunteer hours. This would take pressure off of students during standardized tests, allow colleges to see how well-rounded the students are, and give students who are better in other areas
The state tried to force this child, Ethan, to take this test. In the meantime while Andrea was fighting the school system, Ethan Rediske passed away. It doesn’t have to be this way. Our children aren’t all dying of terrible diseases, but these standardized testing is killing our brothers and sisters creativity and passion for school instead.
