Human beings must be willing to accept people or opinions different from ourselves. We recently viewed "My So Called Enemy," read "Texas vs. Johnson" by: William J. Brennan and "American Stands for Tolerance" by: Ronald J. Allen. Each piece contained profound information as how different people should be accepted even though they have different thoughts or believes. An example is when it says people should be willing to accept it even though you may not think the same. According to the trailer "My So Called Enemy," Adi from Isarali doesn't wan peace, she wants justice and understanding because it is more realistic to her. This demonstrates that Adi wants like revenge because she wants justice and she's not accepting others. The …show more content…
The author states on lines 37-39 "The way to preserve the flag special role is not to punish those who feed differently matter. It is to persuade them that they are wrong." Because of this we can't punish or treat others differently because of what their opinions/beliefs we can only try persuading them without offending. Second, on lines 40-43 for "American Flag Stands for Tolerance" it states "My point is that freedom of conscience and expression is at the core of ourselves conception and requires the rejection of official dogma." This demonstrates that having freedom could cause people rejection which people won't think the same and could lead to disagreements. "The ultimate irony would have been to punish views expressed by burning the flag if you have something against with it. In conclusion, we all have different opinions but we should be willing to accept others even though we think differently. "My So Called Enemy" the six girls disliked each other but later they became friends. For "Texas vs. Johnson" a man wanted to express himself about the American Flag by burning it and many people wanted to punish him even though he was protected by the Amendment. This demonstrates that human beings must be willing to accept people and their opinions that are different from
Without acceptance, friendships, relationship, group projects, and college would not be possible. Acceptance makes interactions among people who share nothing in common possible. Appiah introduces the concept of acceptance as amends for differences with what he called the Cosmopolitans. " Cosmopolitans think that it 's OK for people to be different. They care about everybody, but not in a way that means that want everyone to be the same or like them" (Appiah 24).
The American flags served as a blurred line between patriotism and support for Ted Cruz. When a student asked to be excused and not be forced into apparent political association, they were sternly reminded of school policy. All a student could do to show there disagreement was not to accept the flag.
One of Frederick Douglass’ most famous speeches is What to the Slaver Is the Fourth of July? In his speech, Douglass invites his audience to view the Fourth of July from the perspective of a slave to expand the understanding of the black experience. In my critical approach to his piece, I will introduce the dialogue regarding the literary approach to Douglass’s speech and the different approaches to his speech. Then, I will continue with a demonstration of the key points of agreement and disagreement to his speech in the secondary literature. Finally, I will offer my personal interaction with Douglass’ speech and the secondary literature.
In using the story line from Maus, a story about the Holocaust in comic form, and the United States of America’s very own Declaration of Independence, we can see how history has shaped the society we live in today. The Declaration was written so that the American society could establish the main and lasting fact that all men are created equal and there are certain unalienable rights that governments should never violate. These rights include the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This fundamental foundation is the very fabric in which the United States greatness is built upon. Maus, on the other hand, takes the most horrific event of modern civilization and shows the complete opposite, how an individual can live in a world where you are persecuted for who you are, you have no right to liberty or the pursuit of happiness.
At the core of each of the different arguments of the Constitution is the issue of human nature and how it relates to government. In his objection, Richard Henry Lee points out that human nature is the reason the Constitution is ineffective in securing liberties because too much power is given to too few and this majority can be abused. However, James Madison states that people cannot be left to completely govern themselves, because ultimately human nature causes discord and chaos and there must be a system in place that correctly checks the destructive results of the human nature. In his argument for the Constitution, Madison looks at both sides of the dispute giving greater credibility to his conclusion.
Was Johnson really exercising his right to free speech while burning the American flag? Some would argue he did, but others will say he didn’t. In most cases, majority would say he wasn’t practicing free speech which lead him to dishonor the U.S. flag. Flag burning will endanger the symbol of the role as representation of nationhood and national unity. We would be permitting a Sate to “prescribe what shall be orthodox” by saying that one may burn the flag to convey one’s attitude toward it and its referents only if one does not endanger the flag’s representation.
The United States flag is an emblem. An emblem with many facets that mean starkly different things depending on the perspective, some not so pleasant. In the beginning with the best of intentions at heart this nation was founded and our flag stood for liberty, freedom, and justice for all. As the years have passed the meaning has shifted and molded to fit the ever changing ideology of those who call the United States home. ????
Our flag is a sacred symbol of the United States its colors stand for what America believes in: Our country, our children, our military and loved ones, and our very lives. This symbol is a very important part of society and stands tall amongst the world and its many allies. Although America has one thing most countries don’t and that’s tolerance. As the land of the free we’ve became very tolerant to ideas such as Islamic laws and even immigration from other countries.
If someone gives opinion, other people will embrace or refute. “We as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves (Jordan, 2017).” This quote from Barbara Jordan which means as human, people must accept people who have different opinions. American Flag Stands for Tolerance and Colin Kaepernick interview embraces Jordan’s quote, but Tomi Lahren Destroys Colin Kaepernick Jordan’s quote.
During this quarters readings we have read this year all have something to do with one very meaningful quote “we as human beings, must be willing to accept people who different from ourselves”. Each of these readings ,american flag stands for no tolerance , texas vs johnson majority opinion ,and last the lottery . All these stories relate to the quote about accepting others who differ and how we need to be willing to accept them.
Instead, this events are treated as if they were happening elsewhere and this bodies are the bodies of the “them” not “us.” So if “they” become excluded form full humanity, according to the moral intuition of conservatives, it is acceptable because the out-group didn’t try hard enough to become outstanding citizens and embrace extremist views of bringing back a “great country,” which was founded in slavery and segregation. Considering, what defines a great country to conservatives; it is no surprise that during the event, members carried confederate flags and American flags. Given the recent removal of the confederate flag, conservatives show much fear that the culture they have always defended is vanishing at a speed that is not under their control. Therefore, framing fear of loss of values as necessary to maintain loyalty and save the country is a great tactic on behalf of conservatives to not only victimize themselves but also carry on devastating
How much freedom is enough? In the “American Flag Stands for Tolerance”, someone burns the American flag, and is prosecuted for it, but the Supreme Court’s decision fell on the man’s favor. The purpose of the author was to convince people that the Supreme Court made the right decision. The first method to convince people the author uses is a comparison to introduce a worst-case scenario into his argument.
In The Hypocrisy of American Slavery, Frederick Douglas talks to his audience about his reaction when he was asked to speak on Independence Day to a crowd of abolitionists at Rochester, New York.. His reaction being that he doesn’t really understand why he was asked to deliver a speech there, he doesn't feel as if he has a reason to celebrate; because he, along with most other African Americans didn’t feel free, and at that time there were still millions of African Americans who legitimately weren’t. He tries to convince his audience that we shouldn’t be celebrating independence day simply because, half the country wasn’t free at the time. He does this using Foreshadowing, Irony, and symbolism.
Parades, Speeches, and Chains? Frederick Douglass was an orator who fought for his people’s freedom by speaking in front of large crowds. He thought the celebrations taken place of independence and freedom were foolish and unfair for those who were slaves. He believed American slavery was not recognized enough to take action in granting those slaves their freedom. In Frederick Douglass’ speech “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery”, he used irony and juxtaposition to illustrate his opinion about slavery and freedom to educate his audience about the topic, and the injustice of slavery.
“When men and women are able to respect and accept their differences then love has a chance to blossom. ”- John Gray. People should accept other people’s differences. If they do, then everyone will have a good feeling for someone else, love has a shot at blooming, and parents would accept their children even if they are different from most people.
