Strengths And Weaknesses Of The Articles Of Confederation

Why did the Framers of the United States ultimately decide to give more power to the Federal Government rather than the state governments? There were many problems and weaknesses with the Articles of Confederation. Some of the weaknesses was that congress did not have the power to tax, couldn’t regulate trade between the states or foreign countries. They had no National court system, the articles could not be amended without the commitment of all 13 colonies. Despite all the problems and weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation there were some good things about it or “strengths”, like it created the first official government of the United States, and the state had no authority to tax or regulate state-to-state trade.

The Articles of Confederation had many weaknesses as well as positives. From the pros side we have Josh DiGiorgio and Jacob Chrispim. From the cons side we have Grayson Jons and Lexi Rosmarin. We will start with the cons.

Before the Independent War, each state already had its own laws. Speaking from a certain perspective, each state could be seen as an independent country. After America won its independence from the Great Britain in the Revolutionary War, the new country needed a mechanism to unify the thirteen states to form a government. The Articles of Confederation was the first national constitution that was acknowledged by the thirteen American states that was submitted to the Second continental Congress on July 12, 1776. It was sought to be the solution to group the thirteen states to be a country.

The Articles of Confederation were developed to unite all of the 13 colonies as a nation, rather than having them all govern their selves based off of population. The Articles of Confederation had created a very loose alliance of the 13 colonies or states as they will later be referred to. The Articles of Confederation also had been created due to the fact that the Declaration of Independence never stated the word, “nation” and this led others to believe after independence had been officially stated that the colonies would attempt to govern themselves. Furthermore, the Articles of Confederation were completely necessary in its making because the Congress had to lay a base government down for the colonies or an “example” government. The first thing the Articles of Confederation provided would be the fact it gave the states the ability to retain their freedom,

The Article of Confederation was the first written agreement in the United states. There are many strengths of the Article of Confederation. Congress gain the power to deal with foreign affairs. Not only did it they deal foreign affairs, it also dealt with Native American affairs. They also had power to regulate coinage.

The Thirteen Colonies had now been free for a while and had grown into a nation with an abundance of land with a strong sense of responsibility. The United States of America was not like the other nations found throughout the world. It differed though its principals and morals, it radiated a sense of comfort and freedom that was hard to find anywhere else. However, it still lacked a strong government that could support such an important and developing nation. The Articles of Confederation had its achievements that supported it; however, it also had its great shortcomings that made the nation doubt its support to the large nation.

Many people today believe that the federal government has too much power, but can you imagine living in a time where the national government had too little power? The United States claimed its independence from Great Britain in July, 1776. And so it was up to the now free colonists to create their new nation’s government. In fear of living under another tyrant, the Americans wanted to set up a government that would be equally just to all citizens. The Articles of Confederation became our first national constitution in November, 1777.

As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

Without a strong central government, the states were able to refuse anything the government requested. People thought this would be beneficial, but they were proven wrong. “A strong central government, composed of elected officials, will be acting in the best interest of the people”(Document 3). If the government needed to raise money, they had to ask the states to contribute. If the states refused, the government had no way to collect this money.

Before the constitution, people had the understanding of a union, but they were more overwhelmed by their insecurities for a strong dominating power. Under the fear of a tyranny gaining power, the earliest 13 states created the Articles of Confederation as the first framework of a national government, which gave the National Congress little power over the practicality of leadership. The nation was chaotic. Madison, a member of the Continental Congress, reacted to the situation through The Federalist Papers he participated in writing. Particularly, the principles of Federalist 10 and 51, complementing the shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation, was sufficient enough to eliminate the abuse of liberty and the arising tyrannies within the

This process made everything becoming even slower than it is today. The central authority were feared and the land claims of the people would be authorized doing the 1781.

The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States. This document helped and hindered our government in many ways. It was successful in that Congress established a national treasury, and states had begun contributing. It was also successful because Congress created an administrative system to coordinate the daily operations of government. However, there were quite a few things that lead to the Articles of Confederation’s failure.

The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
