In Strictly Ballroom a character that undergoes a great deal of development is Scott Hastings. He progresses from an angry, ambitious and defiant character to a really successful dancer and person. This will be discussed with reference to filmic techniques used in Strictly Ballroom and how they reflect the changes in Scott. In the beginning of the film Scott is seen as an arrogant, self-centred and angry character which is evident in his dancing and his attitude towards others. During the samba at Waratah State Championships Scott is dressed in yellow with his hair neatly gelled back. The colour of his outfit symbolises his desire for his steps to be noticed and foreshadows his erratic decision to dance his own steps in front of the entire ballroom community. His outburst shows his defiance against the traditional ballroom steps and his self-centred nature by not taking his partner, Liz, into consideration. Scott’s arrogance and lack of concern for others is also seen when he knocks Fran out of the way when she tries to compliment his dancing. At the beginning of the film Scott wears black to show his anger and rebellious nature, but his hair is still neatly gelled back, which shows that …show more content…
From this point on Scott is mainly seen in white with his hair naturally in his face to show that he is comfortable with himself. After Rico shows Scott how one should really dance the Paso Doble, the camera zooms in on Scott’s face to show his astonishment and Scott realises that he still has a lot to learn. The cameras angle has now adjusted to eye-level to show that he no longer considers himself to be better than those around him .Scott’s dancing has always been technically perfect but after learning from Rico, Yaya and Fran, he learns how to ‘feel the rhythm’ and dance from the
Throughout the whole book Sleeping Freshman Never LIe by David Lubar the main character changes his attitude about change. On page 264 it talks all about how Scott went to pick u Lee for the dance. This page is really just showing that Lee had become more mature throughout the book by showing that he didn 't care what people thought about him anymore. Another reason that Scott 's attitude changed during the book is that he learned to stand up for himself in certain situations. Towards the end of the book at the dance Vernon the football quarterback sees him dancing with his ex girlfriend and he gets really mad but Scott realizes that he can stand up for himself.
Angus pays attention to what Melissa does and just reacts naturally. Rick eventually comes back because he has a bone to pick with Angus. After making threatening remarks back and forth at each other, Angus says “Next to dancing, that’s my strong suit.” Angus is talking about “making Rick ugly” which means he wants to punch him in the face. The irony is Angus’ new found confidence about dancing.
He decides that even if he can’t dance he can’t just back down now. By going to the dance, and dancing with Melissa, Angus learns to be confident in himself. Anguss’ Call to Adventure is his election as the Senior Winter Ball King. Angus is a large individual, he gets picked on for this a lot. So when he is elected, he knows it was someone's ultimate joke.
The Elements of Dance Shown Through Sergei Polunin “Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their compassion,” this quote by Martha Graham describes Sergei Polunin, who was the dancer in our assigned video. While this dancer is dancing to “Take Me to Church” by Hozier, he is using many different elements to create the form of art called dance. Three of these elements are mine and pantomime, the music, and mise-en-scene. Through each and every one of these elements the dancer is able to tell his audience exactly how intense his feelings are and he can also send emotions to us and make us feel what he is feeling.
Contrasting to this, Zelda and Scott’s relationship is very much in the real world. Unlike Gatsby, Scott controls Zelda, such as forcing her to have an abortion; “I’ve paid in blood to get where I am, Zelda. You’ve got to take care of this. This isn’t what we want right now”. However, the couple try to make their relationship like the perfect fictitious life, and are constantly behaving like others and having to ‘act the part’.
Baz Luhrman is an innovative director with a flamboyant directing style which makes it clear to the audience that he it is not about naturalism, he is creating a piece of art with which he can form a connection to the audience. In order to get this connection Luhrman has re-imagined classical stories by giving acknowledgment to origin but by using his own cinematic philosophy and post-modern filming techniques and has managed to produce the same atmosphere that the original authors intended for that day’s audience. Through analysis of “Strictly Ballroom” (1992), “Romeo and Juliet” (1996) and “The Great Gatsby” (2013 ), one can see Luhrmann’s evolution as a director. Luhrmann makes his films his own from the start, as opening scenes of all three of these films implement post-modern techniques instantly informing the audience that they are about to enter into Luhrmann’s hyper-real, visually intoxicating world. Strictly ballroom uses a documentary type format to introduce its interpretation of the vibrant world of ballroom dancing where everything appears overdone on the surface but is actually conservative below.
Throughout the play, the main factor that runs through the story is the idea of elegance, and one of the main visualizations is the dancing that happens in and out of the story line. Sam and Willie are continually dancing and talking about dancing throughout the story, and while Hally doesn’t dance, he does orient the conversation and starts an essay about it, absorbing their excitement and gracefulness through osmosis. Hally lets himself be drawn into their world, although he isn’t a fan of dancing, outright expressing that dancing is a waste of time in his opinion, saying “...you 're not asking me to take ballroom dancing serious, are you?”(Fugard, 25). Moreover, Hally is no artist, and recounts something his art teacher had said, “...said I was no Leonardo da Vinci and that bad art had to be punished. ”(Fugard, 9).
Attire Females wear pink or nude tights with a black leotard and sometimes may wear a short wrap skirt. All dancers wear soft flat ballet shoes, females wear pink or beige and males wear black or white. Females are required to place their hair into a bun for freedom of movement and for the instructor to be able to see all body lines. Styles of ballet Romantic ballet displayed exaggerated and intense emotions to enhance the experience.
I decided to interview one of my friend’s older brother, Minh. My friend and I have been friends throughout high school, and I decided to interview her older brother because I do not know him very well and wanted to learn about Minh’s passion of breakdancing. I was particularly interested in learning about breakdancing from Minh because it is the foundation of hip hop dancing, which is one of my hobbies. The interview took place on Saturday October 17, 2015 at 11 pm through a Skype video session. I called Minh on Skype from my dorm room on campus, and he was sitting in his room with a casual, red t-shirt.
His skinny arms become words on paper. He dances as if it is the last time he ever will. During fast, energetic songs, it’s extremely difficult to keep a straight face and incredibly baffling as to how he can move so quickly. To be honest, Colten’s dancing is often times better than the movie itself. His self invented dance moves are capable of making the entire family’s stomachs ache with
Just as in many other different styles of dance, each individual person in tap dancing may have a unique style that will distinguish one from another. In the film, the character speak about the different styles and how they would exchange certain moves from other dancers, or that they would simply steal a move from another dancer. The dancers often later develop their own style and creativity by modifying other moves that they have acquired, or simply completely making it up from scratch on their own. The film also exposes the difference between individualistic freestyle tap dancing and commercial choreography tap dancing. In the individual freestyle, the dancer is free to use any move that her or she would desire, but in commercial dancing, dancers must follow the routine and dance in a certain fashion that fits the needs of the director.
The reason for these notable changes to the original settings is because Luhrmann chooses to appeal to a modern day audience rather than regurgitate the same old setting that would have appealed to the people at the time the source material was written. Similarly, Luhrmann satirises the dance world in “Strictly Ballroom” and chooses to stray away from naturalism, preferring rather to go for over the top use of make-up, wild costumes and unorthodox use of camera cuts and zooms in order to put forth the themes he finds essential, staying true once again to his personal philosophy of cinema, a reel (artificial) rather than real (natural) approach to film
Even in the present days, ballet russe has been an inspiration for many fashion desingers. The first of them to have a ballet russe-inspired collection is Yves Saint Laurent. Yves Saint Laurent’s Fall Winter 1976 collection which has been referred to as “Ballet Russes, Opera et Ballet Russes, Rich Peasant, The Russian Collection or simply YSL’s 1976 collection”, is one of his most famous and notable collection. This collection was inspired by ballet russe as well as Babushka peasant costumes.
For example Romeo and Juliet starts with a news flash on a television screen describing city brawls that have taken place and later in the film there are more fights that occurs. Strictly ballroom starts off with Scott dancing his own steps which is the result of the story and The Great Gatsby starts off with youngish narrator, apprentice bond trader Nick Carraway, in rehab, brought about by the story Luhrmann illustrates throughout the film. All of Baz Luhrmanns films are set in the closed, confined, isolated little worlds. Strictly ballroom is set in the isolated, specialized world of ballroom dancing, and nearly the entire film is shot in either the ballroom or the dance studio. The only time it goes off this is to visit Frans house where the shot is totally devoid of colour.
Ever since i was young i fell in love with the art of dance. When i finally joined i felt like i was a little behind hence everyone was in my class was dancing since they were toddlers. My first day of dance was pretty nerve racking. My teacher would say to do something and i wouldn't know what to do because i didn't know any dance vocabulary. I would have to look around and try to fit in as much as possible so my teacher wouldn't think i wasn't fit for the class.
