In his article, “Dude, Where’s My Policy?”, economist and columnist, Paul Krugman argues that the initial uproar and fear that many intellectual liberals felt immediately after Trump’s election should be abandoned on the basis of Trump’s lackluster domestic policy development. Krugman instead champions the idea that Trump will be an ineffective President. By minimizing the effect of Trump’s presidency on the long term political climate Krugman comforts an audience of his peers who fear the world that Trump’s presidency will create. Krugman begins his article with a comedic tone to express his frustration with Trump and establish camaraderie with his audience:“What Trump has done or tried to do over the past two years-wait it’s really only been two weeks?-is incredibly bad”(1). This statement also serves to introduce Krugman’s purpose. Krugman articulates that one cannot differentiate between two years and two months of Trump’s presidency, a statement which indicates that Trump will …show more content…
Krugman references Wall Street’s assertion that there would be a push on infrastructure and tax cuts, however by prefacing Wall Street’s assertion with the phrase, “remember after the election” (2), he invalidates their argument, suggesting that it is dated. But, to an extent Krugman agrees that Trump’s presidency could prove disastrous: “Big tax cuts- and savage cuts to social programs- are still very much on the Congressional Republican agenda, and they could put it all together, hand it to Bannon, and have Trump sign it without reading”(5). This, although it is meant to highlight Trump’s destructive power, it is still in line with Krugman’s argument. Krugman emphasizes that Trump does not read, which is representative of his general inability to complete his duties as
Nicholas Kristof’s “3 Peerless Republicans for President: Trump, Carson and Fiorina”, deems the leading candidates from the Grand Old Party unfit for presidency, and the public’s fixation with them a temporary affair. Multiple previous controversies being detailed, and the use notably bleak statistics help undermine the contenders while urging voters to look elsewhere. Kristof utilizes harsh diction with a simple, yet critical tone to denounce the trio, and further his own
Dead Certain: The Presidency of George W. Bush is a completely bias book. This book would be useful in a psychology class on what is the mental capacity of a self- centered and extremely conceded president when complementing his own judgement. The author is also majorly opinionated towards Bush because he got his information from Bush himself. He used to be an editor for Texas monthly.
Presidential election brings a lot of attention to candidates running for the office and public is listening and watching every move they are making. Public is also analyzing their thought process. News and media is analyzing their moves and trying to break it down for public. This year’s presidential election is nothing less and candidates have been under fire. San Jose Editorial group is also breaking down stands of this year’s candidates.
Congressional Caucus Chaos In “With Boehner’s Departure, Congressional Dysfunction Will Only Grow,” Norman J. Ornstein argues that a radical group in the Republican Party has kept progress from being made and John Boehner resigning from his Speaker of the House position will not make things on Capitol Hill any more productive. Ornstein says that, “The realists, like Boehner, understand that divided government requires compromise,” but unfortunately, extremists are unwilling and outright opposed to doing just that. Ornstein believes a successful upcoming congressional session does not have a chance at occurring and finds Radical Republicans to blame because they have made stopping President Obama’s plans a priority. I agree that one group of Republicans are keeping Congress from not only passing meaningful legislation on the controversial topics, but keeping them from passing common sense laws; however, I disagree with the author in regards to Congress staying on this uncivil, unproductive path.
John Boehner’s Resignation and the Republican Presidential Race On September 25th, Speaker of the House John Boehner announced to congress that he planned to resign within the next few weeks. Following this news, the Republican Party has had constant debate over Boehner’s departure and also over the fate of the party as a whole. In the article by Collinson and Reston, the two authors claim that the Republican Party is becoming increasingly divided causing traditional republicans like Boehner and Jeb Bush to be seen outcasts.
In today’s world, with all the technology that is readily available, finding information that is creditable can pose as a challenge. With social media and everything being online, it seems as if anyone from everywhere can post whatever they think, whether it is deemed to be accurate or not. Using the topic of national debt of the United States as a guide, I was able to analyze plausible sources and compare them to inaccurate sources. Journalist, Brandon Greife, in his article, “Liberals are Losing the National Debt Argument,” elaborates on the topic of what liberals are having to say about National debt. Greif’s purpose is to tell readers about what liberals are doing and why it is the wrong way.
Paul Krugman, on March 28, 2016, wrote “Trade, Labor, and Politics”. He wrote this article to explain about how nobody knew about the international trade policy being an issue to the presidential campaign. He feels that the Republicans will claim free markets stand and would most likely nominate an unrefined protectionist excluding the Democrats from their doubtfulness on hampering the markets of open trades. Pompously, Republicans have always intended to practice more protectionist than Democrats.
It’s 2016 and the presidential elections are just around the corner, which means that there are a bunch of articles being published daily over which candidate will destroy America. Donald Trump seems to be a popular choice in that area, or at least he is for Michael R. Strain and Douglas S. Massey, who each wrote their own unique articles. Their articles “The Surprising Reason Donald Trump’s Wall Would Be a Waste of Money” by Massey, and “Donald Trump’s Immigration Plan Would Cause U.S. Citizens to be Deported” by Strain, tore down his infamous idea to build a wall bordering Mexico. Both articles contrasted the reasons for Trump’s wall, Massey utilizing statistics and Strain using opinions to convince the audience that the wall idea needs to be torn down. Both Strain and Massey made an article bashing Donald Trump’s plan, doing a
Consider how Donald J. Trump routinely finds himself in the news for another hyperbolic remark on Twitter that lands him in deeper do-do than a previous tweet storm in the early dawn hours. Never mind that we 've come to accept his knee-jerk White House policy tweets as the new normal and bombastic criticism of even his own party as fair game. Further still, never mind that President Trump 's approval ratings have been treading on life support and his administration hasn 't passed any significant legislation in his first six
Congressional Gridlock Congressional Gridlock is a recurring issue in America’s political system, and it is crippling the efficacy of the governments ability to lead the country to overall prosperity. Gridlock, in terms of politics, refers to the inability for the political system to adequately satisfy the needs of the citizens in that country. In reference to Congress, a gridlock is when the people cannot be satisfied due to disagreements in legislation that hinder the process of making laws. One recent consequence of congressional gridlock is the congressional stand still concerning gun violence in our nation and the oppositions on what affect, if any, it has on gun laws. Another example of a congressional gridlock is the lengthy wait for
Unshared Power of the American Government On January 3, 2015, the 114th Congress with the Republicans being the majority party in Congress, in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, seated the Capitol Building. The controversy takes place in Washington D.C., the capital city of the United States, inside the Senate chamber and the House of Representatives of the Capitol Building. The people involved include President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and all of the senators and representatives. Many people believe that with a Republican filled Congress can come great results such as fixing all the mistakes Obama made.
President Dwight Eisenhower was a decorated war veteran in world war 2 before he became president of the United States. In January of 1953 president Eisenhower gave his first inaugural address to the citizens of the United States. Two foreign and two domestic policies will be analyzed in this paper. The policies were talked about in the inaugural address. This will show president Eisenhower's policy plans for his first four years in office.
In my paper, I will analyse Donald Trump’s political activities before and after the election to get an objective viewpoint of America’s President. We’ll start off with the history of Trump, both personal and political, to see whether there was some sort of significant development over the years indicating a tendency towards ‘good or evil’. Next, we will take a look at what Donald Trump promised to do – the wall, lowering taxes and repealing Obamacare to name a few – and evaluate if he managed to keep his election pledges. This success rate is a major factor in definitively assessing Trump’s influence on America.
I decided to embark in reading a book about the life of Alan Greenspan by Bob Woodward published in 2000. I was attracted by the title of the book, but especially by the designation of maestro, given by the author to Alan Greenspan, who served as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006. To me, the title of maestro denotes a conductor of an orchestra, the one holding the baton marking the beat and indicating each compass of a work of music. It may also signify a master, a genius, an expert, a prodigy and many other distinguish labels. The visual of a conductor is appropriate under the context of the economy, and how marking the beat and giving appropriate and timely guidance may result in a coherent and harmonious piece of music.
Barack Obama’s win for President in 2009 was a historical moment for the United States. His inaugural speech was much anticipated, because this was going to set the tone for his presidency. His speech told the American people that improving the economy is one of his priorities, but there were also other areas he would like to improve like healthcare and the education system. This was a speech that was meant to persuade the American public to take action for them to rise as a nation again, and for them to put their trust into him. His message addressed a couple of specific points like his gratefulness to the American people, the different crises America is facing, how America will overcome these crises, replying to his cynics, addressing the world, and then he reminded America again to be brave like they’ve always been to overcome the hard times (5 Speechwriting Lessons from Obama's Inaugural Speech, (n.d.).
