Post Thirty Years war left France looking for a new leadership style that would give plenty of stability. What France received was Louis XIV, who would reign under the new absolute monarchy government. During Louis’ reign, divine rights controlled rank in society. This left many confused on why they were picked to be at the bottom of society, and why the king was given his power. Jean Domat, a royally appointed juror by king Louis helped explain a better understanding of the new system of governance to the people of France in his writings. Domat wrote “On Social Order and Absolute Monarchy” to defend the king’s powers, and to give a better understanding of the hierarchy type system so ordinary people would accept it.
Jean Domat’s life goal was explaining absolutism. Since he was not a king and seen as a regular person, people at his time can get a better understanding of the system when someone like him explains it. He explained that the king was given his power through God and is responsible to no one but God. Why? Mentioned before, Domat was a royally appointed writer and he owed his position to King Louis. Therefore, his duty was to help people realize that King Louis XIV is a great leader, and that the new government is a change going towards the right direction. Since he worked under the king, he wrote “On Social Order and Absolute Monarchy” knowing that he would be able to convince France to accept not only their new king, but the absolute monarchy government. He urges those in power that if they “ want to keep their post must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires” (863). His ideas are actually showing that people in power remain so because they have the ability to do good but avoid doing so. Public policy is based on principles, yet politicians don’t create public policies that can do good for the people because they fear loss of power. In this case he is utilizing public policy to protect his power and therefore defending his personal interest. Furthering claims, he asserts “Since a prince cannot use this virtue of liberality in such as to become known for it unless he harms his own security”(865).
He ruled by divine right theory which held that he had received his power to govern from god and was therefore responsible e to god alone (doc 1). During this time King Louis XVI became too powerful. King Louis XVI way of ruling is by divine right . Which led to a lot of despair in his country. One of the causes of the French Revolution is the unfair treatment of the third estate
The idea expressed by Rousseau in The People Should Have Power that “Man is born free. No man has any natural authority over others, force does not give anyone that right. The power to make laws belongs to the people and only to the people” influenced people who been suppressed by the royals and the aristocrats, and the independence of the United States is a perfect example for the Frenchmen to follow. In Domat’s “Social Order And Absolute Monarchy” the argument is that monarchs should stay in power and that is their divine right to rule that would keep society together, monarchs are natural and necessary form of government that society should follow. Jean is of the mindset that monarchies are one of the most effective and natural forms of government, however he mistaken to believe this. “The first distinction that subjects people to others is the one created by birth between parents and children. And this distinction leads to a first kind of government in families, where children owe obedience to their parents who head the family. The second distinction among persons arises from the diversity of employment required by society” (Domat 28).
King Louis XVI, who was the ruler at the time, was a main contributor to these problems that led France to its downfall. The country had a massive lack of resources and food, which led King Louis XVI to borrow more money than he could afford, thus putting the country in immense debt. Despite the very visible crisis overthrowing the country, the king was incapable of accepting his mistakes and refused to change his ways. He maintained the unjust voting system, known as the Estates-General, and worsened the taxing system in order to pay off his debts. The people, especially those of the Third Estate, were clearly angry and dissatisfied with the state of the country, which led them seek out a movement for what was right.
During the 1600s and 1700s a new type of monarch emerged known as an absolute ruler. Some of these rulers were Louis XIV, the Fredericks of Prussia, and Peter the Great. These rulers believed that a monarch had a divine right to rule and should only listen to God. All these rulers had characteristics that defined them as absolutists. Louis XIV was constantly at war during his reign which resulted in a powerful army.
In particular France under Louis XIV was an absolute monarchy defined by “L’état c’est moi” from which all authority flowed. For instance the political appointment by the crown of Colbert as the minister of the marine marked the first time an official of the church was not selected . This marked a shift from the church providing the structure of the government in the colony. Furthermore the creation of the Intendant position to supervise land grants and the seigneurial system also served as providing more political balance to the colony that was appointed by the crown and not the church. To further the political control of the church by the crown during this time frame it also granted subsidies to the church while opposing the belief that the church held political authority .
Louis XIV was a very conceited person. He thought that everything and everyone should revolve around him. Louis XIV led an absolute monarchy in France. He called himself “Sun King” because he thought that everyone and everything should revolve around him. He made sure that he had absolute power over everyone and no one else had a say in what happened.

The debt of King Louis XIV was very troublesome. It caused his once powerful and rich kingdom, to plummet. The article Memoir of the Reign of Louis XIV, by the Duke of Saint – Simon: Louis de Rouvry, states, “He wished to reign by himself. His jealousy on this point unceasingly became weakness . . . He liked nobody to be in any way superior to him.”
Since the beginning of time there’s always been some form of struggle to break away from the grasp of someone powerful and someone who strives for power between those of mankind. This is evident all throughout history in society, even during the 1940s when this novel, A Lesson Before Dying takes place. Grant Wiggins and Sheriff Sam Guidry are prime examples of two characters that struggle to separate themselves from power and strive for power and are determined to keep themselves in power respectively. Grant is the main character of the novel with quite the cynical and depressing outlook on the South, which is the place he was born and raised. A series of bad financial and political decisions, lead to his unpopularity among the people of France. King Louis was young, distracted and misguided.
In the medieval period of 1050-1300, the Kingdom of France progressed and developed along many lines. A new culture developed, a central government emerged and new lines of thought began to come into fruition. With these developments, many problems began to emerge. The issue of violence in general emerged as a problem that needed to be addressed by the government. In addition, greed and corruption ravaged the church questioning its moral integrity, and thus, its authority.
