The fiction novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” Harper Lee is about a white southern woman , Mayella Ewell who is charging an African American Man of Rape. Tom Robinson is on trail and later is found guilty ,although throughout the novel reveals truths about power in the south in the 1930’s. Using the definition Mayella is not a powerful character because she’s extremely poor with no education or job and is controlled by her father . Women throughout this time period were limited of having power because of their gender.

Tiffany M. Gill’s Beauty Shop Politics takes place during the Jim Crow era. Gill’s argument is that the role of African-American women is significant, but greatly overlooked in their tradition. These women were entrepreneurs and served their community, but their hard work and contributions went without recognition. What exactly is “power”? Power is the ability to control and have respect in a certain way. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, the small town of Maycomb have a trial in which a black man was accused of raping a white woman. But because of her class and gender, Mayella, the woman who claimed rape, lacks power, but her race makes her powerful.

Summary and Analysis of Graham’s Our Kind of People Within Our Kind of People, Lawrence Graham illustrates the attitudes, lifestyle, and organizations of black elites within the United States after the 1950s. Although the civil rights movement began in 1954, the first recorded slave revolt was back in 1663 proving that all African Americans have been working for centuries in order to get the same rights as white people have. Luckily, all their hard work caused all slaves to be freed in 1865 then the The Civil Rights Act of 1964 which ended segregation of people based on their ethnic background. But, unfortunately, African American women still do deal with major issue simply based on their race. With stress of racism being a possible cause for a high mortality rate in African American mothers, slurs still be frequently thrown around due to it being “just a word”, and we still even have neo-nazis/white supremacists marching around and claiming to be above all non-white people.

Black female Identity in America has changed as decades and centuries have changed. When African men and Women were captured and stripped from the shores of Africa in 1619 and brought to an unknown strange land the women served as a comfort for the broken African men. After 200 years of slavery and after the torture, rape, castration, scare tactics, beatings and mental bondage and the broken family structure, the African women reminded them of love and peace, they told them that a change will come, they reminded them to pray and to know that God is watching. The declaration of Independence was signed in 1863 there was a sense of relief, and hope.

Rhonda Williams introduced the distinction between black power and Black Power. Patricia Hill Collins’ “Black Feminist Thought” discussed the importance and power of the black feminist thought and black feminist critique, what she called the “matrix of domination”. Collins argued the critiques offered two main contributions: (1) they provided another way of looking at oppression through an intersectional lens, and (2) black feminist thought acknowledges and centers around the voices of black women, even in a field of predominantly white scholars. She argued that a subordinate group experiences a different reality than a dominant group and interprets that reality different than them; it is the connection of what a person does and what he or she thinks. This idea reminds me of how a dominant group, Whites, make assumptions about a subordinate group’s, Blacks, life experiences. Whites cannot explain those experiences of Blacks simply because they are the one group who caused the pain and suffering of Blacks, what they have experienced and are experiencing, from acts of discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice.

However, black women like Beyonce use their musical power and showcase their bodies to make themselves appealing to get their voice heard. She wanted to use what has which is her body and her applealing body to get her voice heard, and to show that music can be used to get a message across and create a change at the same time. This piece of her talent really shows her point and outlook of the world from Black women’s eyes and gets to really show how they feel. Kathryn Stockett illustrated in her novel, The Help, the power struggle in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi. The fictional novel follows a maid named Aibileen as she tells her story in an attempt to fight for the hope of change in her community.
