Sarah Grimke was a woman who fought for the eqaulity if sexes and whom did not accept the wrongdoings of slavery brought upon them. Grimke then became a leader for women’s rights and abolition to be able to express her strong viewpoint towards the way women were treated. In 1838, Grimke published letters, Letters on the Equality of the Sexes and the Condition of Women, in which revealed her criticisms and possible solutions. Mentioned in Letters on the Equality of the Sexes and the Condition of Women, Grimke indicates the deficiencies of “the butterflies of the fashionable world.” She is referring to the class of women whose main purpose in life is to attract men with their looks in order to get married. Grimke proclaimed in her letters, girls should be educated to cultivate their minds, to allow time for reading, to be constantly inculcated, and to improve their intellectual capacities rather than exclusively worrying about culinary and manual operations. In other words, Grimke longed for an education where women didn’t spend so much time on domestic duties, such as, “furnishing a well spread table.” Grimke not only wanted a change in women’s education, but a change in their husbands mindset as well. That the husbands would need to encourage their wives and help out around the house in order for Grimke’s vision on education to work out. On the other hand, Grimke still believed that the “knowledge of housewifery” was “an indispensable requisite in woman’s education.” Simply put, Grimke understood the importance and need for woman to still be able to perform domestic duties. Grimke inferred that families saved time and money and were happier as a result from doing her duty thoroughly and understandingly. Christopher McDougall, an American author and journalist, once said, “It takes a woman to bring out the best in a man.” Even though this quote can be applied to many different situations in life, its meaning cannot be more germane than in John Wyndham’s, The Chrysalids. In the novel, Waknuk society regards women only as breeders and not as human beings. Women are powerless for they practically have no rights in their society and their sole purpose is to please their husbands and take care of their household. It is often said that slavery is the most important conflict in American history. Many people in the northern states in America were opposed to slavery, but the inhabitants of the southern states were mostly for it, as they depended on slaves for their economy. Most of the time, slaves were subjected to horrible living conditions, and treated even worse. Sarah and Angelina Grimke were two women who noticed the horrible injustices done against the slaves and decided to do something about it. The work of the Grimke sisters helped spread the news of abolitionism and women’s rights as well.
Biography 1: Sarah Grimke was a white woman who lived in South Carolina from 1792-1873. She came from a family that was wealthy and slave owners. She was educated privately and was expected to play a high class woman in the Charleston society. After her father's death she moved to philadelphia and ended up becoming a Quaker. Sarah Grimke was the first woman to speak out against slavery and the equality of men and women.

The oppressed cry out but until somebody in power joins them, their words fall on deaf ears. This has remained a pattern from the time of prehistory to today. Until someone else is willing to lend an ear, and eventually a hand, the beaten down stay beaten down. Such was the plight of the black slaves in America. However this act of sexism changed in the early years of the 1920 's, women began to get involved in male dominated jobs. Still, men were seen as better than women, this way of thinking pushed women to break out from the limitations imposed on their sex.
