He used these flash backs and incorporated her family to go into depth about her past, and let the readers infer why she is the way she is. The bowling ball that is repeatedly mentioned throughout the story contrast her past life. By giving her a hobby, and showing the struggles she has experienced in her past, she becomes like a real person readers empathize with. To begin with, Casares often went back in time to show her seemingly unhappy life with her now deceased husband.

Quiroga’s literary pieces have been undoubtedly influenced by tragedy and death encountered in his life. His devotion for Edgar Allan Poe’s caliginous style enforced him to delve into gothic themes in his works; such as death. The story begins when the family buys a new house on Mango Street. This new house is the first the family has owned and does not fulfill their dream. The house is simply not big enough for the family.

The House on Mango Street is a touching and timeless tale told in short vignettes. It tells the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. Her life, and the lives of the people around her, are laid bare to the readers in this touching novella. In the beginning, Esperanza is not accepting of herself. Her family’s poor financial situation, the sadness of the people around her, and the problems she faces in her daily life make her very cynical.

In “The House on Mango Street” the windows are directly correlated to five different women in the book. For some it shows their nativity or even their dreams. Most of those women are a direct correlation to Esperanza’s growth and development as a person and character. Still, they all have one thing in common. These women including Esperanza are all imprisoned in the novel by different aspects in their lives.

A loss of physical innocence is shown here, "I can 't see my own arms and legs or know if this is a trap or blessing" She is telling us that she has become physically detached from her body and she is confused as she doesn 't understand if this moment is a "trap of a blessing. " The loss of innocence clearly links up with post-apocalyptic times in The Road to Winter where Finn lost his innocence when he decided whether to kill Ramage or not and him discussing his emotions. The novel has many dangers moments in it and this is shown in the poem as well, "rises up silently like dark bread. " This simile reflects the dangers of the natural world in post-apocalyptic times.

Thursday I stroll into my room, swing open my closet door, and I peer in to see what I am to wear for the night. As always, I end up closing that door after .2 seconds, turn on my heel towards my roommate’s room. “What do you want to wear of mine tonight?” I smile, and open her closet, “What have not worn yet? I want to look hot.”

The left corner wall is muted purple giving off a mysterious feeling to it. The back left wall has a feeling of hope in the pinkness of it as there is always hope however far but it is dimmed in the face of adversity. The back wall is a mixture of blue and grey with a shadow covering part of it giving an uneasy feeling. The right wall is grey representative of the stoicism of the mother and father towards the protectiveness of the child. The table is sun washed wood drained of most color with the shadow in the corner of the father and mother.

Poverty, discrimination, parental and neighborly responsibility, and respect are all issues and social forces that act upon the family; their presence or lack thereof cause several grisly occurrences to take place.
