Lanette J. Puccini Component 2 Teacher Toolbox 101 was a remarkably worthwhile course. As someone who has been away from full-time teaching for 15 years, I desired to select a course that would provide useful techniques to refresh and sharpen my skills as a teacher. Currently, I am operating in the role of a substitute teacher. Each day, I work with children of varying grades, ability levels, and backgrounds. This course has equipped me with many valuable concepts and strategies that I will use regularly as a substitute, as well as in the future as a full-time classroom teacher. First and foremost, reading the book Inspire! Connecting with Students to Make a Difference by Lee J. Colan, Ph.D. was extremely beneficial. Impacting a young life has long-term significance. In some cases, the impact a teacher leaves on their students has the potential to reside inside of their hearts for the rest of their lives. It is my desire to be a role model who inspires my students to be the best version of themselves, and one who leaves a positive lifelong mark. Furthermore, I believe it is of utmost importance for a teacher to make a connection with each student early in the year. These connections are essential for students to develop a commitment to their learning. A good rapport with a teacher will motivate and inspire students to give their best. Additionally, I understand more clearly that an inspirational teacher will not overlook any of the six basic needs that dwell within each student. As a kindergarten teacher at Otter Lake Elementary (WBLAS) and first grade teacher at S.G. Reinertsen Elementary (Moorhead Public Schools), I have learned the importance of establishing a sense of community and belonging in the classroom. By providing a stimulating learning environment that fosters confidence and encourages each child to reach their fullest potential, I aim to meet the specific needs of each student. Throughout my past four years at Weddington High School, I am inspired by the impact my teachers have given me. I believe education is the greatest gift you can give to a person who is striving to make a difference. This is something that I have been interested in for several years. I am currently a teacher assistant for Mrs. Donna Nunn’s Microsoft Word and PowerPoint class that allows me to see how lesson plans are carried out in a classroom environment and I know that this experience has given me a stronger desire to become a teacher. During my freshman year of high school, Ms. Marisa DiFronzo made literature become a very engaging subject for me, not only by her way of teaching but also her ability to bring the class together as one.
Especially for their age, they are going through so much change and so many different experiences going on, that they need to have a teacher that can be a role model to them. It is going to be important for me to ensure that my students know that my classroom is an open-minded space, in which there will be growth and students striving for a goal throughout the year. As the school year progresses, my students will have the opportunity to grow and change. I want them to believe in themselves and be able to reach their full potential as not just a student, but as a person as well. One of my activities I did at the beginning of the year was to meet with my students and we went over goals that the students would strive for.
During adolescence, I sat in dilapidated classrooms without fully functional lighting and materials, and was taught by dispassionate teachers—I was even called stupid by an 8th grade teacher. This experience has not only prepared me, but also taught me that leadership and compassion is the way to get through to students, especially those who are having issues with comprehension and motivation. Even as an adult, I struggle to come to terms with the notion that I am squandered potential, and I am left, at an older age, to discover who I want to be and what mark I will leave on this Earth. Without having the support of teachers and administrators who cared about my success, I often think about how far I would have been propelled in life. What would I be able to accomplish?
For myself, this notion is best articulated by John Maxwell’s (Youthdoit.org, n.d.) quote of “Leaders become great not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.”. I believe that a teacher’s role in a student’s life holds a profound influence, not solely as an educator but also a role model, it is crucial for teachers to acknowledge this influence and accept the responsibility to shape and develop values, beliefs, and aspirations. I believe that teachers through their own actions can largely impact the character development of their students.
Video Response 3 Addressing a student’s needs plays a vital part in the student’s academic success. Understanding one’s needs requires that a teacher take the steps to understanding the child’s personality traits, interests, abilities, disabilities, and so forth. Students are more likely to grasp the interest of learning a specific subject if they feel that the teacher is kind and understanding, just as Trisha and Brittany’s teachers is. Brittany’s mother mentions that a significant change is notable in Brittany’s self-esteem and grades (Kirk, Gallagher, & Coleman, 2015). Trisha certainly associates her good grades to her relationship with her science teacher and identifies her teacher as helpful (Kirk, Gallagher, & Coleman, 2015).
I enjoy being a part of something bigger than myself and having the opportunity to impact someone’s life-however small the difference. Personally, I believe that modeling is the most effective way to lead. I try my best to make choices that I know will represent myself and the important aspects of my life(clubs, leadership positions, family, etc.) in a positive way. How will you serve first year students as a resource on campus? Being available and able to be selfless when the time calls is important as a peer mentor.
Teachers are able to make students think critically, generalize information and help them adapt to new information they learned. Teacher, student and peer interaction creates a social dynamic culture it makes learning meaningful and promotes a group identity amongst the students (Sternberg and Zhang, 2001). One of the unique aspects of the Department of Child Development and Family Relations is that many of the department’s large core courses offer teaching assistant opportunities to undergraduate students. Teaching assistant opportunities are valuable for undergraduate students to decide whether to apply as a graduate teaching position, great addition to a resume, and for a letter of recommendation. From my teaching assistant experience, I was able to fully grasp the concepts of middle childhood development, form a new appreciation for professors and teaching assistants, and reflect on myself as a student. Throughout the quarter I have learned many things that will help me become a better teacher, and that will help me guide children. Children joyful, they make everything so happy, they are always so positive, and contagious. I have learned ways to nurture children, and how to develop relationships with them, which helps work towards the main goal; bettering the child and educating them. There is an abundance of ways that I can work toward being the best teacher I can be, and making sure the child, my priority is getting the right education they need. It is very important to be on the child’s side, to have a relationship with the parents, encourage the children, listen to them, and many other things that makes a child’s education successful.
Language: the language that teachers use has to be high level, which conveys a sense of professionalism that is honourable, moral and dignified. Professional judgement: the teacher should be able to place the needs of the students at the center of professional judgement. The teacher should be aware of his/her individual values, personal experience, commitment to authenticity, decision-making processes and work towards providing sound judgement. There is a school of thought which says that judgement grows with time and implies knowledge and wisdom, that teachers’ judgment improves with time. However, it is essential to ensure that all teachers possess a significant level of professional judgment.
The point of this article is basically being there for them, teach them how to be independence, have someone to be in their life that we care about them. When the kids have trouble of reading, spelling, studying, we tutorial them and give them practice skills to work on their weakness to work on. We teach them how to control their emotions. When you have a friendly relationship is to always let them know that you care about them and show them develop trust to them, have that special bond with them. It is important to teach students about the classroom rules, schools rules, daily routines, learn to practice new skills in the classroom and out of the classroom, and now their school schedule and outside of school schedule.
They must display to each student that they do care for them individually. The teacher needs to show that each student does matter. They are unique and special and as a teacher we care. If a student knows you respect them and sincerely care for them, they will give even more than you ever
