Sarah Dessen used to say that “Accepting all the good and bad about someone is a great thing to aspire to. The hard part is actually doing it. (Dessen, 2013)” Similarly, Barbara Jordan, a leader of the Civil Rights Movement, said “We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves. (Jordan, 2016, 45)” Both quotations mean that when people face conflicts or have differences, they should be willing to understand the others’ perspective rather than just ignoring or refuting it. However, not all people agree with these ideas. For instance, Texas vs. Johnson Majority Opinion and Jim Wright’s letter embrace the central idea of the Jordan’s quotation, while Tomi Lahren DESTROYS Colin Kaepernick refutes it. To begin with, Texas vs. Johnson Majority Opinion basically agrees with Jordan. In 1989, Gregory Lee Johnson, in Texas, burned the American flag as a way of protesting the new policies by President Ronald Reagan. Texas’ government pushed for his punishment, but Johnson appealed against the decision (Beers et. al, 2016, 15). Finally, Supreme Court’s …show more content…
Johnson Majority Opinion and Jim Wright’s letter concur with the concept of Jordan’s quotation, Tomi Lahren DESTROYS Colin Kaepernick rebuts it. Both Texas vs. Johnson Majority Opinion and Jim Wright’s letter have strong supporting ideas, which are First Amendment and the life lesson that the best way to make one to respect is show respect to that one first. However, Tomi Lahren DESTROYS Colin Kaepernick provides little to no evidence in comparison to the other two. She accuses him of not paying tribute to the army, a statement Kaepernick more than once said in his interview. Frankly, Lahren does not make fair arguments other than he is a disgrace, which does not contribute to the reason why Kaepernick should not be accepted. All in all, it seems people generally live by Jordan’s thoughts, and those who aren’t do not have a good reason to refute
The decision by the District Judge came just before a contempt of court hearing was to be heard. In the case, Joe Arpaio was accused of ignoring summons given by a Judge. Two prominent newsmen and civil rights activist Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin joined the voices of those disenchanted by the Judge’s
The United States Supreme Court played significant role in deciding cases regarding property rights. Originally there were many misunderstandings between companies and individuals, corporate and private interests, Native Americans and U.S. laws. These misunderstandings created tensions between different parties and had to be resolved by the Supreme Court. There are many cases that deal with contracts, due process clause, or takings clause and different interests that were at stake; the four cases to review in detail are Johnson v. McIntosh (1823), University of North Carolina v. Foy (1805), Taylor v porter and Ford (1843), and Proprietors of the Charles River Bridge v. Proprietors of the Warren Bridge (1837). Johnson v. McIntosh (21 U.S. 543
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is the highest court in Texas that hears criminal cases. The Supreme Court of the United States gets an appeal from Texas. This grants a certiorari, which is a writ of superior court to call up the records of an inferior court or a body acting in a quasi-judicial capacity. Johnsons wins his case 5 to 4 because the Texas statute is unconstitutional. Johnson won his case simple because, the fact that people get offended, because of certain ideas or expression does not justify a means of the prohibitions of
Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee’s play “Inherit the Wind” contains occurrences that are so outlandish it is hard to believe that the play was heavily based on an actual trial. Most of the play was fictionalized for entertainment’s sake but it still kept the main themes from the trial of The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes The most significant theme of the play is the importance of an individual being able to think freely and not worry about being discriminated and punished for his beliefs, which is displayed in the quote above The quote above is spoken from a broken man, a “sovereign schoolteacher” (Lawrence Lee 22) who chose to share his harmless ideals to a community but then was treated as if he were a “criminal” (Lawrence
“Shipp”). He was taken outside to the chants of the rest of the mob and was then marched to the Tennessee River, where he was thrown in (Pfeifer, “Historic”; “Shipp”). After waiting a couple minutes, Johnson was pulled up (Pfeifer, “Historic”). There were signs of life from Johnson, so the mob shot him (Pfeifer, “Historic”). His last words were: “God bless you all.
Reading through this book showed a lot of examples of people not respecting other’s ethnic groups, beliefs, and economic status. In the novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, Harper Lee explicates the topic of how everyone should be accepting others by their appearances because everyone is made the same, even though their nationality might be different. Take for example, an egg: there are brown eggs and a white eggs, from the outside they may look different, but on the inside they have a yolk. Just like a human, we may look different from the outside, but we are still similar on the inside. After reading this book people should accept others regardless of who they are and what would happen if we accept people in this world.
The Supreme court accepted the case. Fields attorneys are arguing that the Stolen Valor act is unconstitutional. Field attorneys argued that Fields cannot be convicted because he lied. The First amendment protects speech that does not directly harm others. Fields attorneys claim that Fields had lied about himself, and by lying about himself he only hurt himself.
Analytical Essay: “We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.” This quote is about things such as approval, cooperation or acknowledgement. But most importantly, acceptance.
In the year 2006, the Stolen Valor Act made it illegal to make medals of Honor. The case brought forth to us describes issues brought about by this act. In United States v. Fields, Abel Fields attended a meeting where he proclaimed that he had military experience, and that he earned a Purple Heart. He had made false statements, and in turn was convicted, and had to pay a $1,000 fine. Fields felt that his First Amendment rights had been violated.
The speech “The American Promise” by President Lyndon B. Johnson was one of the most influential speeches covering racial discrimination in the United States. In the speech, Lyndon covers topics of racial inequity, unjust actions, and equality for all. President Johnson wishes to inspire people to do right by all Americans no matter what color or race by using allusions from worshipped text and connotative diction to change people’s vision on the racial problems in the United States and how it is unlawful. President Johnson used allusions to create an emotional appeal for the masses of people watching or listening. One allusion would be when Johnson states, “‘All men are created equal”- “government by consent of the governed”- “give me liberty
Martin Luther King Jr Response Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter From Birmingham Jail” is a beautifully composed letter with many passionate points and remarks which I found exceptionally intriguing. Martin Luther King made countless great statements, however I did find two particularly outstanding passages that stood out to me which spoke about the term “extremist” given to Martin Luther King’s nonviolent approach to attain justice and equality as well as the fact that many of his white “Christian brother’s” as well as his “black brothers” had a great significance in this revolution. Martin Luther King Jr.’s passage that expresses his thoughts on being labeled as taking “extremist” measures states, “But though I was initially disappointed
Life Lessons "Before I can live with other folks, I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience" (Lee). Atticus Finch says this in To Kill A Mockingbird. I agree with this quote because of personal experiences I had along with other people’s experiences that have been shared with me.
Have you ever looked up at the night sky? Have you ever noticed the patterns, the constellations? They’re so beautiful. Yet, the sky looks so much prettier when you just see it as a mess. It looks like a toddler splattered black all over dark jeans.
This quote means a lot to me because in many situations, I feel as if I cant be myself because socitey tells us that there is one way to be and if you are different, you are not accepted. A couple of years ago, I was a bit bigger in size compared to all of my friends. Because of this, I was constantly made fun of, called names rude names, and always just pushed to the side when I was with a group of friends. Since I wasn't "good enough" for the rest of the girls around me, I was treated differently, but this quote reminded me that its okay to be different than the rest. My religion also came into play with this quote.
“When men and women are able to respect and accept their differences then love has a chance to blossom. ”- John Gray. People should accept other people’s differences. If they do, then everyone will have a good feeling for someone else, love has a shot at blooming, and parents would accept their children even if they are different from most people.
