The abuse of alcohol is prevalent in many aspects of Indian life. In the Novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” and the film “Smoke Signals” alcohol abuse is one of the main factors of creating hardships. The negative effects of alcohol are evident in both stories through the examples of Death, Physical abuse and Addiction. First, The abuse of alcohol is prevalent in the novel and film because it's the main factor of death in both stories. The death of juniors sister mary in the novel was caused by alcohol. “They had a big party --,” my father said. “And your sister and her husband passed out in the back bedroom. And somebody tried to cook some soup on a hot plate. And they forgot about it and left. And a curtain drifted …show more content…
The abuse of alcohol cause physical abuse stemming from the lack of hope and opportunity that the reservation offers. In the novel rowdy's father beats him and is the reason for rowdy's anger at everything around him. "His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces. 'It's war paint,' Rowdy always says. 'It just makes me look tougher.'”(pg 17). When rowdy's father beats him, I think rowdy wears the bruises like a badge of honor because he doesn’t want other people to see how much he is emotional hurt, over physical pain. The film also portrays physical abuse in the form of victor’s father abusing him. Victor’s father beats him because he has no hope of a better life and that makes him angry at the world around him. He takes out his anger on anyone that is around him, like victor. Including victor’s mother, from a scene in the film we saw that when victor’s parents were in an argument he got violent and slapped her. The abuse of alcohol produce physical abuse by taking away people’s thought to what their actions are. The scene shows that victor and victor’s mother were abused by arnold, victor's

Junior Spirit from the novel “ The absolutely true diary of a part -time Indian” has many dreams and hopes he wants to achieve. He has to go through many obstacles to get what he desires. The whole novel itself has many different outcomes for a theme but in my opinionn, his dreams are the main one. Junior Spirit is a 14- year old Indian boy who lives with his family and other Indians in the rez. In the rez, Junior is more of an outsider than a popular kid.
Charles Whitman “The Tower Killer” On the evening of July 31, 1966 Whitman went to study at his mother’s airconditioned apartment minutes later he shot and killed her. After returning home, while his wife was asleep, he stabbed her to death and wrote letters to whomever may finds her body. A day later, on August 1, 1966, Whitman, along with a collection of weapons and supplies stored in a trunk, entered the University of Texas tower, wearing overalls. During his climb to the tower’s observation deck, he fatally injured a receptionist and killed two innocent bystanders.
Jamal Wallace from "Finding Forrester" and Arnold Spirit from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian showed their love for their friends. William Forrester and Grandmother Spirit use their great knowledge to advise the ones they love on things that kids deal with when they are in school. Jamal and Arnold's love was shown as Jamal giving a book to Claire and Arnold giving cartoon to Rowdy. As said, Jamal gifted Claire a signed copy of Avalon Landing, a book that Claire has said she read over a dozen times (Van Sant, Finding Forrester).
Like Rowdy, he frequently resorts to violence to deal with his emotional issues. This evident in passage: “ (Alexie, Page )
Society has made kids believe they belong to one social group or another. That you are either popular or a nerd. Being White and pretty makes you ideal - but being disabled and Indian makes you a freak. Is it possible to break the social norms? For a disabled Indian to befriend people from all classes, and become popular himself?

Mom screamed. “He’s trying to kill me!” (71). In accordance to the NIAAA article, alcoholism causes Rex to behave along the lines of the disinhibition hypothesis, which states that when people are influenced by alcohol, it creates aggressive outbursts and a lack of restraint on impulsivity. Jeanette clearly shows how alcohol caused Rex to make impulsive, aggressive decisions and harm the family.

Junior thinks it’s because Rowdy had tears in his eyes, but I always believed it was because Rowdy didn’t want to punch Junior. He was mad at him… but he didn’t want to be. Even when Rowdy was upset at Junior he stilled showed up to support Junior through his toughest times. True friends will always be there they are needed, even if they aren’t on the best
Originally, I was drawn to Smoke Signals because of the modern portrayal of Native Americans by genuine Native American actors. Native Americans have little to no representation in modern media; if they are portrayed, they are depicted as casino-loving drunks. This movie begins with a fourth of July “party” on an Indian Reservation in Idaho which drips with irony that is not lost on the party goers. To make it worse, a house full of sleeping Native Americans is burned to the ground causing one of the main characters, Thomas, to be parentless. I think that Thomas goes through many internal struggles with regard to losing his parents and he copes with this by being overly involved in his friend, Victor’s, relationship with his parents.
“ The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” is a novel about an Indian boy’s daily life after he transfer white people school from Indian rez. In the novel “ The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”, there are some differences between Wellpinit and Reardon, and these things influence the character Junior. These two school are different in race, Wellpinit has different rules in students’ mind about solving problem, and the teacher in Wellpinit is also different from the teacher in Reardon. More over, Wellpinit has low level literacy, students in Wellpinit is not good at sport, but Reardon is very well, and the gap between rich and poor is also the difference between Reardon and Wellpinit. Caused by these difference, character Junior grow up a lot.
While this quote discusses the influence for violence within the sports arena, it is also true for Micky’s overall experiences in the film. Specifically, the first category of coaches, teammates, and family, as for Micky all of these are often rolled into one. His family encourages his violence within the sport of boxing, even encouraging him to take a fight that they know he will likely lose. It is clear from the fact that both the sons, Micky and Dicky, were employed as professional boxers that the family fosters a rather violent form of
Junior’s Determination Authors give their characters many different character traits that are shown throughout the whole story. The author Sherman Alexie Showed this with her characters in the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. One of his characters Junior was seen as determined. Junior is a very determined person because he switched schools to get a better education, he continued playing in the basketball game after being injured, and he was able to not let Rowdy score points by guarding him.
