From June 26 to July 2, 1862 the Seven Days Battle was an attack by General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army that comprised of six different battles. McClellan 's army had the intent of capturing Richmond, Virginia, but Lee lunched a counter attack and drove McClellan’s army back to the sea. This ended the Peninsula Campaign. With a Confederate Victory, this increased morale in the South, because of the string of victories Lee had had. Lee would soon be victorious at battles following seven days battle, such as Fredericksburg.

Not only did Lee lead by providing purpose, direction, and motivation but General Lee also accurately assessing the battle. “Commanders continuously assess the situation to better understand current conditions and determine how the operation is progressing. Continuous assessment helps commanders anticipate and adapt the force to changing circumstances.” Lee assumed risks, such as invading with an inferior force, knowing that his generals were capable of carrying out his plans. With extensive information about the enemy’s size and whereabouts, he could accurately assess the risks.

The Battle of Shiloh started on April 6, 1862 and ended April 7, 1862. and was held in southern Tennessee. The Confederates army General was Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T Beauregard. The Union army Generals were Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell. Before the war begun Grant found a spot on the Tennessee River and taught the new soldiers different techniques to survive the war.

On October 6 the president ordered McClellan to cross the the Potomac and attack the enemy. Two people that stand out the most as having played a significant role in the Battle of Antietam are Major General George B. McClellan and General Robert E. Lee. Major General George B. McClellan was in charge of the Union while General Robert E. Lee led the Confederate invasion into the state of Maryland. Both of these important commanders had similar background having both graduated from West Point second in their class. McClellan overall had significantly less time in service with only eighteen years. General Lee had thirty three years’ time in service at this point.

They might not have been able to recover from a loss this big. It was avoided, however, on the 17th of September in 1862. This was when the Battle of Antietam changed the entire course of the war. James McPherson argues that the Battle of Antietam was the battle that changed the entire course of the war, and he is correct in saying so. There were many influential battles that aided to the outcome of the war, but this battle was the most important as it changed the outcome of the war completely.

In the battle of Gettysburg, Generals Robert E. Lee and George G. Meade used their strategies to form an unforgettable battle. Lee, and the general of the Union was George G. Meade. The Battle of Gettysburg started off when Robert E. Lee formulated a plan to attack the Union in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Lincoln called for 500,000 troops on both sides settled for a long battle. Abraham surprised a lot of people by proving to be a more than a capable wartime leader. He learned quickly about strategy and tactics in the early years of the Civil War, and choosing the best commanders. General George McClellan continually frustrated Lincoln with his unwillingness to advance, and when McClellan failed to see Robert Lee’s retreating Confederate Army in the outcome of the Union victory at Antietam in September 1862. The battle of Gettysburg is still considered to historians to not only be the most important battle of the Civil war but the deciding factor towards victory.

The Battle technically lasted 3 days, September 16-18 1862, although, the main fighting was only on the 17th. George McClellan was the Union General of the troops in that Battle, and Robert. E. Lee was the confederate General. Lee was at a disadvantage because his army was half the size of McClellan’s army. Both sides suffered about 10,000 casualties and the Battle was generally considered a tie, it was thought that the Union army could have shattered Lee’s army if they had pursued him back south.

In September 1862, a battle was fought in a small town in Maryland. More lives were lost than any other battle or war that the United States has ever experience before or since. This battle had no true winner but it did have consequeses that changed the course of the Civil War. In James M.
