Nature versus nurture, a controversial topic, debates whether parental guidance or biological processes affect people more. This constant theme throughout the autobiography Black Boy provides evidence that the way Wright was raised affected him less than his own choices. To begin, Wright’s family holds religion to an extremely high standard. His granny, aunt, and mother, like most of his community, are avid churchgoers and believers of god. They try to infuse their own beliefs on Wright, sending him to religion school and taking him to church.

Richard must restrain his feelings and desires around White people, which is straining and anxiety-inducing. But, the ambitions that he must conceal are a part of the very nature of his life and personality and the only thing that keeps him from acting on that ambition is his need for survival. The tension that Richard feels surrounding White people and conformity in society comes from the internal tension between his
Nature and Nurture have the potential to influence both behavior and personality of an individual. Nurture provides someone that is more immersed to follow a specific path while nature is more unpredictable. A personality laid out by nature is often times aggressive or even shy. In the autobiography “Black Boy” by Richard Wright, Richard learns that racism is prevalent not only in his Southern community, and he now becomes “unsure of the entire world” when he realizes he “had been unwittingly an agent for pro-Ku Klux Klan literature” by delivering a Klan newspaper. He is now aware of the fact that even though “Negroes were fleeing by the thousands” to Chicago and the rest of the North, life there was no better and African Americans were not treated as equals to whites. This incident is meaningful both in the context of his own life story and in the context of broader African American culture as well. At the most basic level, it reveals Richard’s naïveté in his belief that racism could never flourish in the North. When
Nature refers to all of the genes and hereditary factors that influence who people are. This varies from someone’s personality traits and to their physical appearance. Although extrinsic factors occasionally played minor roles in the decisions the Wes’s made, the emotional support of their families and connections was seen to influence their end result. What this argument overlooks and fails to notice is that nature does not determine your success, it only triggers nurture to affect the choices you make, and affect how successful you become in the
Nature is the predetermined traits that people are born with, while nurture is the influence that affects people after they’re born. The debate surrounding Nature V. Richard is at first confused why he is being fired, but as it happens more and more he learns the smallest actions can infuriate white people. The nature vs. nurture debate centers on whether human behaviour and personality are inherited (nature) or acquired (nurture); in other words, whether a person’s environment or a person’s genetic inheritance determines their behaviour and personality. Goldsmith and Harman (1994) adopt a neutral position, in which both nature and nurture influence people, stating that they “believe that the fundamental issue concerns the interplay between characteristics of the individual and of the relationship” (54). Goldsmith and Harman discuss temperament and attachment for infant, with temperament being linked to the nature side of the debate and attachment being linked with the nurture side; as a result, the infant’s temperament influences the attachment bond between the infant and the mother, but the attachment bond influences the temperament of the child as well. Therefore, both nature and nurture interact with each other to produce people’s behaviour (Harman et al. 54). Andersen and Berk (1998) take on the nurture perspective, while Leary (1999) claims that nature is the determining factor of a person’s personality.
Being called “nigger” everyday was something that any Black person would face living in the American South during the early 1900s. Richard Wright wrote a book called Black Boy describing his life in the Jim Crow era. This era of time in the South caused Blacks to feel like an inferior race to the Whites. The Jim Crow Laws was a statute that the South put into order in the 1880s to segregate the races. The laws segregated the workplace, bathrooms, restaurants, and parks ("Jim Crow Laws.").
The story represents the culmination of Wright’s passionate desire to observe and reflect upon the racist world around him. Racism is so insidious that it prevents Richard from interacting normally, even with the whites who do treat him with a semblance of respect or with fellow blacks. For Richard, the true problem of racism is not simply that it exists, but that its roots in American culture are so deep it is doubtful whether these roots can be destroyed without destroying the culture itself. “It might have been that my tardiness in learning to sense white people as "white" people came from the fact that many of my relatives were "white"-looking people. My grandmother, who was white as any "white" person, had never looked "white" to me” (Wright 23).
