Human Rights: Human Trafficking
Human trafficking can be defined as the practice of enlisting, transporting, or sheltering individuals forcefully through coercive and deceptive methods. It is important to note that a majority of people mainly focus on sexual trafficking while it also includes activities ranging from ownership of slaves to the importation of cheap labor. In fact, in his study, Weitzer acknowledges that, “What gets sidelined in the focus on sex trafficking is labor trafficking-in agriculture, manufacturing, fishing, mining, and domestic service” (8). Human trafficking happens everyday. People are abused physically, mentally, and treated as objects. It has been a global problem for many years. Throughout the world there is around

Currently, several actions have been taken to fight against human trafficking. To begin with, nations have come up with policies aimed at reducing the number of incidences. The United States started the fight in 2000 when passed legislation aimed at combating the crime and established the office to monitor and combat trafficking victims. Other nations have joined the fight. For example, England has also set up an anti-slavery law and it is working on educating its citizens on the importance of it. Law enforcement has also helped reduce cases of trafficking. The imprisonment of some human traffickers have discouraged and made it impossible for some of the accomplices to conduct their business (Weitzer 12). Many countries have signed the U.N protocol, however, the efforts made so far have not been fully effective as the majority of human trafficking industries are still able to conduct the trade in …show more content…
To begin with, some of the governments in the world have made money by taxing the people who engage in the human trafficking trade. In her book, Kara states that, “The total revenue generated by all forms of contemporary slavery in 2007 was a staggering $152.3 billion, with profits of $ 91.2 billion” (19). The business makes it a good source of public finance through tax. Some republics have considered legalizing some forms of the practice. For instance, Italy was debating on whether or not to legalize brothels (Kendrot). Aside from that, trafficking helps rescue some of its victims from poverty and poor life conditions. For example, some of the rescue victims in the US from Mexico and Russia were grateful that they were trafficked and had a chance to live in better living conditions. In fact, a majority of them prefer the abuse and low wages over the conditions in their hometowns. The positive side in which these individuals view the trade makes it challenging to stop
As we speak right now, someone across the world is being forced into labor or sexual interactions. Men are the minority in this case and not forced into this as much as women and children. Most of those children are girls of ages from eight to fourteen starting in this business. I highly doubt any of you know that human trafficking, the modern day slavery is worse today than it was during the Atlantic Slave Trade in the 1500’s. Human Trafficking is where traffickers forcefully control victims to make them engage in sex or labor against their will (Bales 1).
The human trafficking seen is helping spread diseases like HIV/AIDS as well as infections such as
There will be no solution to the growing problem of human trafficking until more people are aware of how human trafficking takes place, until states begin to deter human trafficking more effectively, and until more individuals take an active role in reporting possible acts of trafficking to the proper authorities. Therefore human trafficking cannot be defined as any one particular crime; it is not simply sexual exploitation. Other forms of human trafficking are labor trafficking, slavery and in some cases human trafficking consist of the removal of organs. It is much more than that because human trafficking has many different characteristics. In the article "Hidden in Plain Sight: Human Trafficking in the United States,” Hepburn and Simon state that “. . .
Human trafficking produces billions of dollars in profit every year, it is right behind drug trafficking as the most lucrative form of crime throughout the world. (DHS website). Victims of human trafficking rarely come forward due to the threats of murder, threats of killing their loved ones/friends, as well as having nowhere else to go because they have been ostracized from their own family and their “pimp” is their family. Another issue of why victims do not come forward is that they are afraid of law enforcement so they may go to jail, etc. (DHS website)
Although numerous people are clearly not as knowledgeable on the problem of human trafficking and how seriously terrible it is, if more people got educated about it and all the problems that come with it and helped to take the initiative to stop it, we can severely decrease the percentage of its existence and make it obsolete. Human Trafficking is more than just one type of problem it consists of multiple things ranging from, illegals, children, sex trafficking, slave labor, and even organs being taken from others to be given to others illegally. In Houston, this plague is growing to a very significant amount. Everyone always questions Human Trafficking and what it is.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Human trafficking is to big of an issue to be kept in the dark because if it is ignored, then it will make things worse. Human trafficking is a worldwide crime, especially in the United States. Men, women, girls, and boys are being forced into labor and are sexually abused to gain personal profit, which are sold illegally for these actions. The people that experience human trafficking are affected because they need freedom and remain affected even if freedom is granted.
Even if we instinctively struggle to admit its existence, we cannot turn our backs to those victims of trafficking. Governments do not talk about it and society doesn’t see. That’s where the media comes in. Human trafficking has become more visible by the help of the media. The media shows everything about this clandestine crime, that are hidden from view.
Human trafficking generates billions on earning, with 2014 statistics reporting that “Human trafficking earn profits of roughly 150 billion a year for traffickers” . While
As a criminal act, trafficking violates the rule of law, threatening national jurisdictions and international law. Further, trafficking in persons redirects the benefits of migration from migrants, their families, community and government or other potential legitimate employers to the traffickers and their associates. Difficult as it is to measure accurately the scope of human trafficking, it is equally difficult to measure its impact. The dynamics of the trade are constantly evolving and a range of national perspectives exist.
Human trafficking, or trafficking in persons (TIP) or modern day slavery, is a heinous and widespread crime occurring around the world in nearly every society. Most people often thought slavery was part of the past; however, human slavery is part of our current society and has been an on-going issue around the world. Human trafficking is a type of slavery that involves forced or bonded labour, sexual servitude, child labour, or involuntary servitude all over the world. It is important to note that sex trafficking contributes to more than half of human trafficking and most of these victims are women and young girls. This modern day slavery can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at anytime (Ton, 2012).This literature review of documents and reports

ABSTRACT Human trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of slavery, forced labor, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. This unjustified trade and exploitation of human beings in the 21st century reflects a sad state of affairs which confirms that the greatest ethical challenge facing the globe today is human trafficking. It portrays a contrasting picture of inequality among equals with regard to the right of every individual over his or her life, since trafficked victims are compelled to sell their inherent freedom. Their cry for help is drowned in the sea of constant oppression and general sense of apathy which has been continuing for centuries. Human trafficking can occur within a country
