Wealth is a possession that many individuals inherit, yet Trevor Noah 's memoir, Born a Crime shows that he worked against all odds in order to gain his wealth. Beginning with his birth as an illegal child, he and his mother were at a disadvantage. As such, she had to hide him from society because if the police caught him, she would face imprisonment. Poverty did not help his situation. In fact, it made him put his plans of getting a university education on pause, and caused him to engage in criminal activities. When a child is constantly at risk and suffers from poverty their life becomes tough, but adding abuse to the situation makes it even tougher. His abuse, in particular, illustrates that danger could come in different forms, from a bus driver to a …show more content…
Trevor Noah’s mother tried so hard to save him from reality, but it could never be enough as many dangerous people threatened his life. In the first chapter of this memoir, Trevor tells of how he had to jump out of a bus and run for his life with his mother; if the bus driver caught him, he may have died that day (). The environment that Trevor grew up in was unsafe specifically because many men in South Africa abused their power, one of these men was his stepfather Abel. Particularly, Abel used to beat Trevor and caused him and his mother physical and emotional pain. In addition, Abel spent all of his money on alcohol, and he shot Trevor’s mother. Although Trevor’s mother tried to report her abuse, the police remained patriarchal and did not arrest Abel or file her accusations. In South Africa “a woman is either raped or battered every four minutes.” () These women, are also victims of patriarchal society in South Africa as women are still suffering under men. Through this all, Trevor was able to move on with his life and pursue his career. His mother couldn’t help him overcome his traumatic experiences, yet because of his upbringing and optimistic attitude, he was able to move on, and even find humor in
How is it that two men that come from identical backgrounds end up being completely opposites? Wes Moore takes us back to his childhood growing up, and also introduces us to a character sharing the same name as him, and similarly, the same lifestyle. Both of the young men shared the absence of a father figure, living in poor neighborhoods, bad influences, and lack of education. While reading, we question “how?” and “why?”
Poverty is a social problem that affects a significant amount of individuals across all cultures. However, the youth growing up in these conditions are becoming susceptible to falling into deviance provided by their peers. Young individuals born into poverty have little opportunities to advance because they unfortunately didn 't win the genetic lottery of being higher class citizens. In the song “Institutionalized” by Kendrick Lamar (Kendrick 2015), suggests that poverty has become an institution where individuals are held hostage to their social class for being born into poverty. Kendrick uses the phrase “master take the chains off me” (Kendrick 2015 line 15) to emphasize the strength of poverty and how it is so closely related to slavery.
In the article “How I Discovered the Truth about Poverty” Barbara Ehrenreich gives her view in poverty and explains why she think Michael Harington’s book “The Other American” gives a wrong view on poverty. She explained that Harrington believes that the poor thought and felt differently and what divides the poor was their different “culture of poverty.” Ehrenreich goes on to explain on how the book that became a best seller caused so many bad stereotypes on the poor that by the Reagan era poverty was seen as “bad attitudes” and “faulty lifestyles” and not by the lack of jobs or low paying jobs. And they also viewed the poor as “Dissolute, promiscuous, prone to addiction and crime, unable to “defer gratification,” or possibly even set an alarm clock.”
" Since then, the boy carefully watched for his father's movement. When the parents or someone that the child lives with abuse them, they suddenly have to protect themselves from being abused by watching their actions or thinking about how to fight against the parents. In the other hands, children tend to grow up and act like their parents and they do the exact same thing that their parents used to do with them when they were a kid. Child abuse effects on a child's life greatly.

In Bell Hooks’ essay, “Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor”, Hooks addresses and clarifies the misinterpretations that people have of the assumptions made of the poor, how poor individuals are viewed in human culture and how the poor are represented on television. She helps the audience understand how these assumptions are wrong. Hooks begins her first point by addressing the false assumptions that are made every day about poor people through expressing her own experiences.
The impoverished conditions in which the residents of this community live are difficult based on the surrounding violence and discrimination they face. Tre, Ricky’s best friend, is able to survive the surrounding violence and discrimination through his father’s sensational leadership; he therefore knows what to do in situations he faces among his friends. However, his friends are not so lucky. For example, Dough doesn’t have great leadership or a father figure, but is raised by a single mother who is determined to get her children to succeed; nevertheless, her main focus is Ricky because he has the most potential; he is an
In the poem, “The Child Who Walks Backwards”, Lorna Crozier discusses the cover up of parental abuse in narrative style of poetry. Lorna Crozier expresses the point of view as if someone is observing the abuse from the outside, specifically the neighbor to the mother and child. The poem proclaims that the son of a mother constantly runs into things and sleep walks during the night which supposedly were the causes for the marks and injuries that appeared on the young boy. Upon closer analysis, it comes to realization that the child is the victim of abuse. Parental abuse is something that everyone should be wary about because a lot of parents abuse their children and force them to be silent about it.
Generational Poverty Poverty has been around for numerous years. Poverty can be a generational problem if people let it. James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” and David Joy’s “Digging in the trash” both show that families in poverty do not have it easy, the children will live in poverty unless something is done, and people either find a way of escape or stand up against it. In the short story, “Sonny’s Blues” Baldwin shows how the lack of monetary resources affects many generations.
The short documentary “Child of Rage” presents an example of how experiencing abuse as a child can shape the child later in life and how some children can recover. The intrafamilial abuse that Beth experienced as a one year old affected her behavior later in her childhood when she was adopted. Beth was also able to recover from some of the effects of the child abuse she experienced once she was separated from her adoptive family and taken to a special home. Beth experienced intrafamilial abuse at the hands of her biological father after her mother passed away when she was one.
Abuse is another thing that has been linked, to problems in a child 's development. The earlier abuse and neglect occur in a child 's life the more severe the impact. Although there a few modern examples of people with a ‘rags to riches’ story, namely Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs, the masses of people born into lower income households don’t commonly rise to the middle class. A recent study by Pew Charitable Trust signifies how important family wealth is, as the “median family wealth of those who made it to middle class was $94,586, while the median wealth of those stuck at the bottom was just $8,892” (Hargreaves 1). The higher a family’s financial capital is, the easier it is to invest in opportunities such as education, which increases income. Winston in 1984 observes how the proles are intelligent in their daily tasks, stating how "even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory” (Orwell 72).
