The Civil War was a controversial war due to the difference of opinion of the states. Texas involved themselves with the bitter side, even though most of the odds were stacked against them. What prompted them to do this? Aside from it being located in the south, Texas fought in the Civil War because its views of states’ rights, slavery, and sectionalism were the exact same as the rest of the Confederate states, and not the Union states. Texas felt that states’ rights were very important when it came to protecting its people. As said in the Texas Secession Convention, “The crisis upon us involves not only the right of self government, but the maintenance of a great principle in the law of nations…” (Doc. C).
