The Controversial War: Texas In The Civil War

“The best way to destroy an enemy is to make him a friend” - Abraham Lincoln. In the U.S. the north was industrial, and anti-slave, and the south was agricultural, and pro-slave. But , why did Texans fight in the Civil War? Texans fought in the Civil War to protect states rights, for sectionalism, and to keep slavery.

So why did the Texans fight? Well they fought to protect state’s rights, their love of Texas, and to keep slavery. One of the most significant cause was they wanted to protect their state’s rights. A quote from Texas State Gazette says “...no state can force another state either to remain in it or withdraw from it.” (Document C)

The political history of Texas is similar to the early history of the United States. Texas gained their independence from Mexico, and the United States gained independence from Great Britain. Both of them went through a war to gain their independence. Also, after the gaining the independence, Texas and the U.S. started to reform.

In 1861, Texas was involved in the fighting of the Civil War. The Civil War was composed of the Confederate States of America, or the Confederacy, and the United States of America, or the Union. So the question is, why did Texas take part in the Civil War? Well, Texas fought in the Civil War for their love for Texas, to protect state’s rights, and to protect slavery in the South. One of the reasons Texas fought in the Civil War was because of their love for Texas.

Because of the conflicts that were occurring during the 1800’s some races did not feel as if they were Americans. The Civil War began on April 12, 1861, ending April 9, 1865. Since having the right of being an American during the 1800 's, whites felt most in control/most common over different races. . Until this day many citizens still believe that a race is more important than the other. Being classified as an American was a major issue during the 1800’s then it is today.

The Texas Revolution has played a massive role in Texas history. In fact, without it, Texas wouldn’t be Texas! But, why was there a Texas Revolution to start with? In this essay, we will be discussing why there was a Texas Revolution and who was there to start it.

Texans fought the Civil War because they wanted to preserve slavery, they loved their state, and they wanted to protect state’s rights. A reason many Texans joined the war was because they wanted to show their love and support for Texas.

This war happened mainly because the U.S. wanted to expand to the Pacific Ocean to fulfill their Manifest Destiny, trying to take away Mexico’s land. Mexico refused to to give land to the U.S. The big question is whether the U.S. was justified in fighting Mexico in the Mexican-American War. The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because Manifest Destiny, too much Mexican interference, and Texas was invaded. One reason the Mexican War was justified was Manifest Destiny. In Document A, John O’Sullivan writes: “Texas is now ours...Let their reception into the “family be frank, kindly, and cheerful….”

When Texas seceded from the United States on March 2, 1861, Texas’s own governor, Sam Houston, withheld from pledging allegiance to the Confederacy. This was the man that had defeated Santa Anna to get Texas independence from Mexico. He was also the man to start the movement to get Texas annexed into the United States. So, why did Texans fight in the Civil War? Texans fought in the Civil War to protect their families, to protect state’s rights, and to protect slavery.

The annexation of Texas occurred in the early 1800’s. American colonists were expanding into the Northern sector of the Rio Grande, which developed the need for Texas to become a part of the United States. In the South, the people supported the drive toward the annexation of Texas, but the Northerners opposed this idea. Texas was another slave state and the nature of their society did not appear appealing to the North.

There was recent talk about a petition calling for the secession of Texas from the United States. Although this movement never had any substance, it got many Americans wondering if Texas could actually secede, and that if it did, how it would fare on its own. Although Texas has the economy, resources and capital, geography, and population to be its own country, there are too many disadvantages the state would face if it decided to go solo. First and foremost would be the issue of Texas national security; Texas would have to create a national army from scratch and would have a weak defense in its first few years of existence. In addition to issues of security, Texas would have to deal with long-term resource management due to the fact that its main resource (oil) is not sustainable.
