The Crucible: Revenge At It's Best

Many others in Salem use the chaos of the witch trials to their advantage. The Putnams wish to have the most land in Salem. When someone is tried for witchcraft and hanged, they must forfeit their land. “There is none but [the] Putnam[s] with the coin to buy such [land]”. Since the Putnams were the only ones with the money to buy the forfeited land, they started falsely accusing and thereby killing their neighbors for the land.

This hard work made it possible for the couple to reside on a large farm near the Putnams. The Putnams and the Nurses are known to have had land disputes in the past few years and because of this, we believe that the Putnams are trying to ruin the reputation of and get revenge on the Nurses by manufacturing false accusations of witchcraft on Goody Nurse. In the Putnam’s eyes, the use of the accusation of witchcraft as a way to rid the family of Rebecca would be a simple solution to their problems. Goody Nurse was accused by Ann Putnam Sr. and her daughter Ann Putnam Jr., and some of the Putnam family friends and relatives for sending out her spirit and tormenting them (The Trial of Rebecca Nurse). The accusations against Goody Nurse only became prevailing in court, because of the sheer amount of people testifying against her.

However, Warren is worried that Abigail and the girls will get revenge on her. During Martha’s court case, Warren tells Danforth that the girls were lying about seeing and talking to spirits. Abigail then accuses John Proctor of witchcraft after he tries to expose her for the liar she is, when she also accuses his wife. From this, you can see how Aurthor Miller uses John Proctor's traits of logic, hard workmanship, and selflessness to show how the hysteria changed people and affected those who had nothing to be accused of.

The Crucible was a fictional story about the Salem Witch Trials that took place in the Province of Massachusetts, written by Arthur Miller. A conflict Miller writes about is that many of the characters are motivated by jealousy. Jealousy is a terrible emotion; it brings out the worst in people just because they aren’t getting what they want. Like when Abigail is jealous of Elizabeth because she is married to John Proctor, another example is how Thomas Putnam is jealous of people who have land, and then Ann Putnam is jealous of Goody Nurse for having so many kids when she has none. Abigail Williams let jealousy get the best of her when she lusted after John Proctor.

By doing this, the vindictive Putnam gains land like others do too to their advantage. Abigail, Putnam, and other characters from The Crucible find the witch trials beneficial. The jealous Abi finds her way out of trouble by accusing other people. With this power in hand, she attacks Elizabeth with accusation because of her lingering jealousy and lust for Proctor. Meanwhile, the vindictive Putnam who regards himself superior of most of the people around him, is thirsty for land and power.

The Salem Witchcraft Trials had many effects on the town of Salem, Massachusetts. A lot of the effects were negative, destroying the community, government, even individuals. The Witch Trials affected the community of Salem in multiple ways. The witch trials created many tensions between several families in the town. The most acknowledgeable dispute from the play was between the Putnam’s and the Nurse’s.

Revenge is a real thing in today’s society. It happens every day. There are different reasons for revenge from as small, as a small child stealing a stick of gum to a drug dealer murdering a nark. Regardless, taking revenge in itself may be for the greater good, or evil.

Cruelty is a recurrent theme in literature that often acts as a critical factor in a novel’s development. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, the occurrence of cruelty is seen to be gradually increasing as the story goes on from accusations of witchcraft that lead into chaos and death. Through Miller’s depiction of the merciless accusations and murders of innocent people, cruelty reveals a high extent of people’s animosity and vengeance that is greatly influenced by the attitude of the surrounding atmosphere. The accusations first began when the girls who were caught “dancing” in the forest were under pressure to confess what they were truly doing.

As Whitney mentioned, the witch hunts occurred in the 17th century were due to the fears of women becoming “economically and psychological” independent, and threatening the male control of property and social order. Those women were viewed as “discontent” meaning the refusal of accepting their predetermined social status (Whitney 85). In contrast, men who had high authority and social status like the Putmans and Parris could purposely manipulate women and instigated the public resentment to falsely accuse, and cruelly eliminate their enemies such as Rebecca and other accused witches. In the 1955 prescribed text, “The Crucible,” playwright Arthur Miller establishes the exploitative behaviour of characters through dramatised staging features. Similarly in the 1964 related text, “The Times They are A-Changin’,” Bob Dylan insights individual ambitions through musical and poetic devices. The shared ideas of the modernist era such as the significance of religion and political hegemony are investigated by both composers in their perspective texts.

In the play The Crucible, character such as Abigail and Thomas Putnam seek revenge from others, so much so that it becomes and recurring theme throughout the play. The theme of revenge can best be shown through the characters Abigail Williams, Thomas Putnam, and Giles Corey. Abigail Williams, one of the main characters in the play, becomes one to the biggest contenders for the theme of revenge. It is revealed in the beginning of the play that Abigail has committed adultery with John Proctor. This becomes the root of the revenge because Abigail now thinks that “there is promise in such sweat.”

Revenge can be a horrible emotion; it can sometimes lead people to do horrible things. By definition, Revenge means to get retribution for a wrongdoing done to you. In my opinion, revenge is mostly caused by fear and the overwhelming feeling of payback Throughout history, revenge, or vengeance, has been altered by several cultures and religions, and even the American culture. Though it often leads one to perform criminal acts, Howard argues that it is a necessary component in the functioning of society. He points out that revenge is a threat that acts as a disincentive to undeserved violence.
