The Dinner Party Analysis

In Cocktail Party Economics, scarcity, value, exchange, production, and comparative advantage are useful in understanding the demand and supply model and the concept of equilibrium. The first concept we can look at is scarcity. “Scarcity creates costly choices” (18). We must decide to go without an item or pay a higher price due to its scarcity. The price can continue changing until equilibrium is reached where the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied.

Over the past few days I have been reading a book that I believe you would enjoy. The book is called Cocktail Party Economics and is meant to explain economics to people who have never been taught the course. One thing that separates this book from other economic books is the way the author explains the topics.

These two are used to evaluate systems of resource allocation. Allocating a resource means deciding what to use it for. The reason resource allocation is important, is because economics studies what people do when resources are scarce, that is, when there 's not enough resources to satisfy all the human wants that are competing for them. Its very rare to find a perfectly functional competitive market. Even though they are efficient they result in very inequitable markets.

In short story, The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant, author W.D. Whetherell characterizes Sheila Mant to be a lazy, self centered, and rude teenager. Fisrtly, the reader finds out that in a low stakes game of softball Sheila does not like having a lot responsibilities. The narrator confronts her and tells her to move to a different spot but gets a response from Sheila saying “‘ I don’t like the responsibility of having a base’’(9). This shows how Sheila does not like having to be responsible for her faults in the game, so it is something that a reader would notice about her character and think that she is not responsible or just lazy. The next encounter with Sheila is a big turning point in the story for the reader to learn about Sheila’s

The second chapter goes back during the time of the revolution, where a dinner party, hosted by Thomas Jefferson, was insinuated for the purpose of gathering Alexander Hamilton and James Madison together, so they could come to an agreement. Prior to the dinner, a proposal by Hamilton was impeded by the likes of James Madison. Hamilton generated a financial plan that would help get the United States out of the debt they were in, however, it was at the cost of the states and veterans of war. The debate on this topic shook up the government and sent them into a stage of paralysis. All of the statesmen were concerned that this was it, a breaking point that would jeopardize the state that the politicians are trying to build

She reinforces the social structural ideas that is presented in the text read in class. Women were not allowed to participate in public affairs. Only men can participate in the public arena. Their domain was the household. Women were in charge of the household.

This statement makes the reader think about the bigger picture of sexism and gender norms that resides in our society. This statements brings the argument past just say new rules are bad and saying the bigger picture is the about norms in our society and how they are greatly affecting women everywhere. And degrading women simply for having a different hormonal make than what people may consider the norm. “How does telling a woman she can’t play as a woman, but “assuring” her that she might be able to qualify to run in the men’s race, not judging her gender identity or sex?” This statement is what really points out how ridiculous some of the opposition sounds.

The American Indian way of life placed women in a lower social class in the society than a white woman. Women did not have rights to choose their marriage partner or make important decisions concerning the family or the society.

Throughout history there have been standers that have been set by the time, that men and women have followed. Many men and women have had to follow the male and female roles set by society, the macula role and the feminine role. Each defining the way a person acts and how they are perceived by others. In the short story Franny by J.D. Salinger a young college student names Franny and her boyfriend Lane spend their time in a restaurant after being apart for a while. The spend most other there time taking in the restaurant then eating.

In all three works the central theme is the overcoming of male oppression and achieving independence. Both Janie and Mrs. Mallard find independence through the death of their husbands, while the narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper finds independence and freedom by herself through “peeling off the wallpaper”. All women have to live in a society, but it is because of women like Kate Chopin, Zora Neale Hurston, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman that they have gained the right to contribute to

Women have found themselves at the bottom of society’s hierarchal pyramid for eons. Even though females make contributions that prove vital to the world’s function, they are still regarded as the weaker link. The female plight of constantly facing debasement is a pawn used to ensure compliance. It is a common notion that if one is demeaned enough, he or she will conform to the suggested persona. Society tests this notion through its treatment of women.

People should not be defined by others' stereotypical views. The Dinner Party by Mona Gardner ties together different events and conflicts in the story to develop the theme that everyone has a different amount of self-control no matter what their gender is. Mrs. Wynnes the Hostess develops the theme by her actions and not letting the Colonel define who she is and defying any such stereotype. Gender stereotypes are introduced early in the story, that is when a girl brings up that "Women have outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at the-sight-of-a-mouse-era" (Gardner 8), but the Colonel disagrees and talks about women's propensity to be melodramatic in most crisis. For instance, the Colonel says " 'A woman's unfailing reaction in any crisis is to scream,

A man is more likely to maintain their composure over a woman in a crisis because they are more capable and secure. Or are they? A widely held belief that is anchored to fit the oversimplified image of what a group of people or one individual person or object is- or should be- is called a stereotype. In the story The Dinner Party by Mona Gardner, a controversial conversation arose between a young girl and a highly-respected colonel in the 1940s, in India. The guests at the elegant dinner party, were comprised of many government officials and their wives.

This passage demonstrates a woman’s dependence on the man, which feeds into the idea that females are fragile and cannot survive on their own. Caroline fights hard and diligent to keep her father alive, but it shows that no matter how hard she tries, he was going to fail because she is female. The father’s death has ramifications in her life because she is lost and broken since she has no man in her life to protect her. In reality, she could’ve kept on with her hard work in order to make money for support, but the book wants to portray her as a destroyed little girl who needs to be saved by a man. Furthermore, Alphonse, Victor’s father, comes to rescue Caroline from poverty and loss and becomes her guardian angel.

She is one of the most important characters in the story. The Antagonist is the woman’s role in marriage.
