Puritan society in early america was very strict. It was not desired to wear fancy clothing or own fancy household things. Being plain was looked upon as normal. The Crucible is a story beginning in Salem Massachusetts in 1692 during a time where witch hunts begin to erupt all over early America. John Proctor the main character is a well respected man throughout the community but his flaw is he had an affair with the Antagonist of the story, Abigail Williams.

The Crucible is a play that takes place in Boston massachusetts it is about a little town being cursed by supposed witches some of the main characters include a fourteen year old named Abigail, John Proctor, Hale and, Parris. What makes a good story? There are many things that make up a good one, this involves having many different types of themes. The crucible is essentially about having courage, weakness, and truth. The character that represents having courage is John Proctor, John Proctor is the main character throughout the story.

Many accused witches underwent tests of moral strength and truthfulness via the trials. Elizabeth was tested of her truthfulness in court, the girls being tested of their loyalty and truthfulness during the trials of the accused, and Proctor being tested by his lust for Abigail and his desire to live during the trials.

With accusations of witchery and his guilt of lechery, Mr. Proctor feels he has a duty to save his name for his children. He can 't stand the idea of his family suffering for the mistakes he has made now and in the past. John 's initial reaction to his wife being accused based off the lust Abigail has, he says, "My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!" (Miller 80) John knows he 's done wrong and will do anything to save Elizabeth 's reputation.

Proctor fights for his wife life and realizes that it is his responsibility to save her. Also in the Courtroom Proctor and other members conversated on the problem. Proctor then confesses the affair with Abigail. Abigail denies proctor claims. Abby Says, “ Mr Danforth, he is lying”(875).

A motive for Proctor’s confession is for Reverend Parris and Danforth’s reputations to be upheld and avoid a rebellion of the townspeople against the court and leaders. Parris fears that if Proctor is to be hanged, then the town will attempt to overthrow the court for it’s dishonesty and rebel against him. Danforth’s beliefs are similar to Parris’: if Proctor does not confess, then his reputation of holding up an honest and valid court would be ruined.

Though the Crucible is fiction, the allegorical character of John Proctor reflects the author, Arthur MIller in the following ways. The Crucible is a comparison to the real life “witch trials “ which we're going on in the real world. Arthur Miller used The Crucible as a way to protest the Red Scare to compare how very similar Salem’s witch trials were to this accusation of communism. The red scare was the inoperable fear of communism within the United States. The Salem trials and communism were times so fearful, when accused you were guilty no matter the verdict.

Some people wouldn 't admit to being a witch just to save their life because of their faith in Jesus.

He turned against Abigail even though he didnt want to turn her in at first. He almost confessed to Witchcraft but then changed his mind because he didnt want his family name ruined.
