The Dystopian Society In Ayn Rand's Anthem

Prompt: Explain the following quote: “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers.” How does this quote exemplify a theme of Anthem? In the novel “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, the main character Equality 7-2521 expresses his own individuality. Through the challenges that he was faced with, he learned many way to express himself differently.

Escaping Communism Ayn Rand depicts a communist world in her book Anthem, where the citizens live day to day identical to the one before. Equality 7-2521, a struggling man in the society, is set apart for his strive of wanting more than what the society gives him. Rand shows that in a world carried on in such a communistic matter, it leaves some struggling and at a loss to make do with what they have and to fit in. The book, Anthem gives a grand example of how others react to one’s differences, shunning them or giving a punishment. Equality 7-2521 has a compelling ambition to learn things which then helps him escape the society.

In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, there is a dystopian society where Equality 7-2521 and everyone else were taught to live and think for one another. Everyone has an equal identity and no one is allowed to be independent. In this world the word “I” is nonexistent, they are forced to act as one and refer to themselves as “we.” Teachers and Council scold and punish the ones who are “different” and “better” than another. This society is ensures that no one can stand as an individual, this represents enslavement.

One of the major differences between capitalism and communism is who controls the resources. In a communist environment, the government has full control of resources; in a capitalist country, the resources’ are the owner’s responsibility. In the US “We, the people” have full ownership of our property; in North Korea, however, they have no real ownership of their property, the government owns it. America is a classed society, as most know as being the lower, middle, and upper classes for the poor, middle wealth, and rich, respectively. Since wealth is distributed somewhat equally in a communist economy, this system is nonexistent.

Anthem Essay Equality 4-2521 in the book Anthem by Ayn Rand ensured his freedom and victory by concealing his find of the tunnel from the unmentionable times. There were many factors that fed into this victory such as stealing the manuscripts for the House of the Scholars, introducing his discoveries to the House of the Scholars, and choosing his own name later in the book. When one is confined to society and held captive against their ego, it is imperative that they learn to eulogize their own individuality, and learn to improve themselves. In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, Rand uses Equality 7-2521 to communicate the importance of the individual. Equality has always had his own sense of individuality that causes him to stand out and defy the social norms. His individuality allows him to persevere and diverge from collectivist society.

Even though there are billions of people that walk this Earth, everybody is their own individual with their own ideas and personalities. Because of this, it is hard to imagine a world where personality and individuality do not exist. But Ayn Rand’s Anthem does just that; she paints a society in which no one is an individual. Anthem’s society is that of conformity, which means one must be complacent with the rules and laws of his/her society. Sure one could see this as a good thing, but throughout Anthem, Ayn Rand shows that conformity is not as good as it sounds, but rather the worst way to live.

A man by the name Yegor Letov once said “I am a communist. Communism is when a person overcomes his personal self and turns into more than just 'me'.” (Yegor Letov Quotes). Mr. Letov believed in a society based on communism, which would create similarity between each member of this society. Any choices made would no longer be about ‘yourself’ as he said, but instead would be replaced with the concept to always think as ‘we’.

During the novel, Anthem by Ayn Rand, the author includes many examples of communism which can relate to communist Russia. “It was not that the learning was to hard for us. It was that the learning was too easy. It is a great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick. It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them.”
