Rhetorical Analysis of George Whitfield’s “On Britain’s Mercies and Britain’s Duties” Great Awakening preacher George Whitefield, in his sermon “On Britain’s Mercies and Britain’s Duties” which was preached in 1746 at the New House in Philadelphia addresses the topic of God’s mercy and the duties the colonists owed to Him. Whitefield’s sermon occurred shortly after the British victory over the French in Nova Scotia. He supports this claim by using biblical references, conducting a series of rhetorical questions, and finally he appeals to the audience’s emotions by using figurative language. Whitefield’s purpose is to remind the Protestants that God was merciful to the British in the war by allowing them to win the war so now
The colonists still had a sense of solidarity with the British people when they sent the Olive Branch Petition to King George. However, colonial identity experienced a significant evolution away from British mentality, beginning with colonial resentment towards the Proclamation of 1763, progressing through the reaction to the Stamp Act of 1765 and the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and manifesting through the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Therefore, colonists became an American people, developing a new colonial identity. When the Second Continental Congress attempted to make amends with King George III with the Olive Branch Petition, the colonies and Britain were practically already at war.
The Sons of Liberty were much like modern day Isis. From burning houses to murder, they were a group of people no one dared to provoke. The famous rebel group took a stand against the British Parliament for what they believed was right. They gave colonists hope in not only their future, but also America’s future. The Sons of Liberty are important because they secured America’s future, showed bravery, and formed the Continental Congress.
The relationship between Britain and its American colonies was civil at first but began to strain in the mid-1700’s. In the beginning, Britain ruled colonies with little involvement because they were busy dealing with the French and Indian War among other things. As a result of this, the colonies were typically left in charge of themselves with little interference from British authorities. After years of being left alone, the colonists had developed a feeling of freedom and independence. When the war ended there was a significant change in the relations between England and the colonies.
”To say, they will never attempt it again is idle and visionary, we thought so at the repeal of the stamp-act, yet a year or two undeceived us…”(Paine, Common Sense) This quote explains how the British were forcing

On March 22, 1765, the British Parliament passed a policy named Stamp Act. George Grenville, who was responsible for this publishment, required all of us Americans to pay tax on every printed paper we used. This included legal documents, newspapers, licenses, ship’s papers, and even playing cards. Some purposes to collect tax from the colonists was to be able to pay the war debt, British governmental authority over the American colonies, and finally the main purpose of collecting tax through this method was to help pay the cost of defending and protecting the American frontier, which was located near the Appalachian Mountains for the French and Indian war. The Stamp Act was viewed as an opportunity by the English to be able to raise money in the colonies without the approval of the colonial legislatures.
