During the Revolutionary War, the Articles of Confederation provided a necessary government that weakly bonded the thirteen states together. The Articles essentially made the states a confederacy without much order. Firstly, governments require a stream of revenue to function properly, and the weak tax authority of the Articles prevented America from paying debts. The Revolutionary War came with staggering costs that left the Continental Congress in debt.

There were many issues with the ‘Articles’ such as economic disorganization, lack of central leadership, and finally Legislative inefficiencies. The ‘Articles’ gave the Constitutional Congress clear authority to Wage war against the British Crown, Negotiate with foreign powers, Negotiate with Native Americans, and Fund and supply the Continental Army with the Articles of Confederation to bolster their legitimacy, the Continental Congress took its first steps toward becoming a bona fide governing body. Later, the Articles provided the foundations for the drafting and ratification of the Constitution of the United

The Articles of Confederation was a written document that entailed the position and function of the national government after the United States declared its independence from Great Britain. It established a weak central government that mostly prevented individual states from conducting their own foreign diplomacy. Until its ratification in 1789, it served as the first constitution of the United States. The Articles had more weaknesses than strengths.

The Article of Confederation was the first written agreement in the United states. There are many strengths of the Article of Confederation. Congress gain the power to deal with foreign affairs. Not only did it they deal foreign affairs, it also dealt with Native American affairs. They also had power to regulate coinage.

The Articles of Confederation were passed following the American Revolution in order to establish law and order to the new country. Compared to today’s refined government, these laws came with many weaknesses such as differences in currency, unequal representation, and no enforcement of the laws. The articles stated that each state could have their own currency, meaning if two people in different states wanted to trade, or if someone was traveling to another state, they would have to exchange their currency. This would turn out to be troublesome due to the extra effort being made in currency exchange. It was like if traveling to or trading with another state was like traveling to or trading with another country in the modern day.

As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

The primary weakness of the Articles of Confederation is that each state retained all sovereignty over itself. Sovereignty is defined as ultimate authority over someone, something, or someplace. Although the National Government had enough power, it gave too much to the states. This lead to a plethora of problems that harmed the government of the United States under the Articles of Confederation. One example of this was the states did not have to pay the government taxes.

The Federalist agreed with the Constitution and its provisions. The wanted to create a strong federal government that will combine both the federal and the states as one nation. One of the weakness that the Articles of Confederation address is that the state had rights to levy taxes and regulate commerce. The states where in charge of the money coming in. The government concern was that if the states did not provide funds for the military they could not do anything about it.

The Articles of Confederation couldn’t deal adequately with many problems that arose during the 1780’s. Some of the problems include National Security and Currency. On the other hand, The Articles of Confederation did have some admirable traits to it. Such as the Ordinances of 1787 and 1785. Though the Articles had some praiseworthy achievements, it did come with some major complications.

The Articles of Confederation were a major improvement over the past government of England, in which the power only belongs to a few people, the king and parliament. The Articles of Confederation allowed each individual state to have its own power. Congress could not require any state to pay taxes, nor could they require to build a national army. Preventing tyranny was a major idea and a major goal that the Articles of Confederation produced. One other improvement that the Articles of Confederation instituted was the idea of not only reducing the power of the king, but increasing the power of the people.

The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.

This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.

I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
